What's going on that makes rehab so lengthy and difficult, I don't really get it. I guess at this point Fed just doesn't want to retire with a whimper i.e. bagel.

I still recall when he had MPs in W19, I was thinking: If he wins now, he retires on the spot. I still think he would have. And instead we got low level, surgeries and heartache. Most careers end like that.

There must be commercial reasons why Roger can’t just admit that he is retired in all but name. He may have sponsorship contracts binding him to stay on tour for a few more years. Why, else, would a 40 year old be looking to return to the tour after surgery that has kept him out for the best part of 2 years?
Even if he had something left to prove it’s unlikely he is going to be able to do that.

Fed is too good to turn into a circus act.
He should of left in 2018. Announced in 2017 that 2018 would be his final year.
This however is the worst retirement for such a player.

Fed should do whatever he thinks is the best for him, even if it means playing until he's 50. It won't take away from his legacy, no matter how you slice it.
Btw, what circus act? Him having another great run at this stage of his career is a circus act? Not at all, it would be legendary.

He had now 3 knee surgeries in a period of just 18 months or so. Something is not right with his body definitely. So retirement is strongly on the cards. But he also says that he wants to be back, and play again at the biggest stage in Finals of Slams, and that he believes that he can do that. So let's see what happens.

Fed is an ATG. He should retire at his favorite tournament (Halle), take a bow, thank the fans, and go out in style.

We would have retired still on top if he did at after his AO 20 lay-off.
2019 was an excellent year for him, no reason to hang the racket yet.

I think the most courageous thing to do would’ve been to tell the team this is it and retire regardless of the result. Getting back there again was always unlikely.
He must’ve known the mileage and how close things were to giving out on him. Either way, 40:15 will haunt us all for a long time.

Well, Fed was close to ending the year at #1 in 2017 and also won AO18 and had CPs at Wimbledon 19, so he was clearly still capable of winning the biggest titles. So, no "lol no".
But at this point, it's gotten a little ridiculous.
Please inform us all when "lol, no" - Djokovic has no chance and should retire. You will never say that, if he has a chance.

2019 Wimbledon could've been a dream but it turned to nightmare and he never recovered. He became a dead man walking after that. He should've lifted the trophy by all means and call it quits in what would be the gloriest victory in history of sport. But obviously there was something which took it away from him, some unexplainable force of the universe. What sins have he committed to Gods of tennis to be punished so cruelly??? I will always remember him for that decisive moment. He has two match points, he serves for the victory and then he fails in terrible, terrible way. What a terrible end to a magnificent player and his magnificent career.

It is actually a sad moment. We've watched Fed for 20 years and now it is over. As if he died or something. Also reminds us of our own transience on this world. Nothing lasts forever unfortunately. Another player to came now and play another 20 years would probably see us very old or in grave by the end of that career. Hopefully Fed can play some of his favourite tournaments next year and be somewhat competitive to end this great career as it should be.

Considering how long he was out with his last knee surgery, I'm not sure why you guys thought he was playing this tournament. Hopefully he can come back by Dubai and have his swan song, and end his career on a high note after playing his favorite tournaments. Surely, you don't want to see it end like this.

Knees. Recovery takes ages. Even if it’s just a cartilage snip. And they are never the same, no matter the recovery. Hard court will be a killer - carpet manageable.

I suppose fans will keep pipedreaming until he confirms his retirement. I guess he doesn't know how he'll recover and he still wants to throw a hail mary than retire officially and then make a presumably failed comeback.

You don't have to like him but he did give his life both to tennis and entertaining people. It would only be celebratory as a non fan if he went out on his own terms. This isn't really the way.
