He's not in the greatest shape in the world. He could be in better shape. It's not that hard to understand!
All you got to do is read a fitness book or talk to a personal trainer. Nadal and Tursonof and Djokovic do not have a sagging belly like Roger!
If he was in supreme shape the little gut he has wouldn't be there. Does it make a difference, not much I would think but he could lose it if he really wanted too.
Ohhh, so great fitness is based on not having a "sagging" belly? As, far as fitness goes, IMO he is at the top of the game in terms of stamina and endurance. This gut issue is something that comes up ever so often, most of the times when Federer takes a break and comes back, more material for to talk about an issue that isn't there.
He has great fitness on his lower body, i.e., his legs, but his upper body isn't in the greatest shape ever, he just has good legs.
I heard some time ago that, that little "gut" they have there is to store energy they need in the game or something like that, nalbandian has a big gut too, so they said they need that for energy purposes or some bull. Fat, they need, for energy. Because fat is energy. I don't really know, i'm no fitness trainer.
So what would be the ultimate best body shape/fit you could have to play the best tennis?
According to the ATP Federer and Nadal are the same height AND weight. Seems like a bit of a mystery to me.

Federer has more fat in the stomach, Nadal has less fat and more muscle throughout his body. Not hard to understand really.

no, fat ways less than muscle mass, so i think your theory is off a bit.
it wont add up. nadal is way to muscular and fed, isnt that fat. so they dont way the same because of their different fat to muscle ratios.
if the atp stats are right for once and they do way the same, then my theory is that fed has a bigger frame than nadal. as in broader bone structure. this translates to more weight for fed, equalling out their differences in poundage.
edit: "WEIGH" not way, hahaha.

Was it just me, or my TV, but did Rog have a little gut showing? I was watching his match against Stepanek, and i could have sworn he had a booze pouch.
I really dont get it. He has a stomach bulge on court but when you see him practicing without a shirt he is incredibly skinny.

Makes sense to me, especially in tennis which is a sprinting sport. Between points, especially a long one, you get only so much time to recover. If you can take in more air per breath - breathing from the diaphram and not heaving at the shoulders - you get faster gas exchange.
Works having relaxed flexible abdominal muscles works for better singing technique too.......and for hot dog eating contests too.
OK, this is one of the most rediculous threads I have ever seen here. No offense but the op has no idea of what "in shape" is. Without tons of physiological details let me say this...the way one looks does not have as much to do with being in tennis shape as you might thing. Trust me, I haver known people who could do iron man competitions that carried small pouches of fat in places...it's their body type, genetics, etc... Yes, you can train for the way you look but that can be completely different from training for specific athletic fitness. Tennis is a tricky one because you must have some reserve for the hours that you play at a time in the heat. This is why most players can't keep weight on..but again, all body types are not alike. "Stamina" has nothing to do with a small puch of fat in the lower belly. Fed is not a body builder. I dare say that his body and fitness match his sport as well as any other world class athlete matches theirs. He is lean and moves well without too much bulk to cause problems with flexability. His right shoulder is probably as strong as you would imagine and his mid section is EXTREMELY efficient. Get your mind off of Hollywood. I used to love it when body builder types would come in and claim to be in tip top shape (for my old occupation). I would always laugh as they vomited from physical exaustion. I have never seen Fed lose because he was too tired to play....even when he was sick, he was still able to finish long matches well. I have seen other pros much younger look like they were on the verge of vomiting. Make no mistake about it, Fed may have a cool, layed back persona, but there ain't no doubt that the man trains his body for what he needs it to do.
