Ryan Harrison: future GOAT and savior of American tennis

Watching Querrey vs GranolaBars now and Harrison seems like a joke compared to Querrey.

Yes but that is Samarai now. How did Harrison look compared to Querrey on his first year out on the tour? How far did SamQ get in the open in his rookie year? And did Sam look as comfy at net as RH?

Isn't Ryan only like 18, and he's playing in the fricken 3rd round of a slam, against a guy who just won a tour event last week?

Does it surprise anyone that he might get a little tight during a freakin 5th set tiebreaker in the biggest match of his life?

Give him a couple years to train, mature and get stronger and i would guess we'll see some nice tennis out of him, AGAIN!!

Woah! Hey! Don't try to inject real life into a debate between Monday morning quarterbacks.

For all those calling this kid the future of American tennis please take some time to think before making a prediction like that. The kid has game yes, he played two very good and entertaining matches at the U.S. Open but that's all. He's certainly not the first to that. As I said earlier in this thread Donald Young did the same at this very tournament. To become a successful tennis player requires an amount of discipline and dedication that this 18 year old doesn't know yet. Let's wait till he at least wins a tournament before we call him the next Pete Sampras ;)

at the same age donald young won in 4 sets against guiccone with a wild card. harrison qualified and took out fifteen seed and uber veteran Ljubicic.

young got a walk over against gasquet, harrison should have been an in form ukraine.

I'm not saying Harrison is a future #1 or slam winner but people who say he only has top 50 potential are seriously underestimating him.

Yeah, but it's Donald's coaches/parents that are holding him back. Ryan has already started his career off on the right foot by cutting the cord and using USTA coaches. One thing's for sure: we need some American men to step up. I'm pretty sure Roddick won't win another Slam. Blake might be done after this year. I don't think Isner's body will hold up. Sam Q is bringing it, but I don't know if he has enough game to go the distance. Mardy is playing the best tennis of his life, but he's in the same boat as Blake.

Ryan Harrison has talent but not a future No. 1 or a slam holder,
unless he improves more,

and im betting that his clay game is garbage

I think Harrison only has top 20 potential for the future. Not that top 20 is bad but I dont think he is a future slam winner or major contender. His future at best holds where Sam Querrey is now. I actually think the best hope for the near future could be Mardy Fish if he continues on the path he is on now, but long term I think it is possibly Sam Querrey or John Isner if they can keep improving.

Needless to say all and all I wont be surprised if the Americans never win another slam on the mens side the remainder of the decade. Possibly on the womens side too if Serena does not come back strong from her foot injury.

don't forget that Don Budge was the only calendar year slam, Chang won the French Open at 17, Sampras won 14 slams, and Agassi got the golden slam. Americans have some tough standards to beat to become the next greatest American, then there's the greatest of all time, which still pits him against Rafa and Fed as well, plus some Aussies.

All in all, he has a long way to go imo

What impressed me even more than his game was how composed and intelligent he sounded in his post match press conference right after losing a heartbreaker. That type of mental toughness from an 18 year old is a rare quality.

He's good, but from what I've heard, his younger brother is also very, very talented - and is on a much higher level at age 16 than Ryan was at age 16.

Anyone who thinks Donald Young has more talent than Harrison knows nothing about tennis. Harrison has a huge serve, huge forehand and is the best vollyer of all the Americans.

His transition game is far superior than any of the Americans right now at 18.

I' not sure about Harrison even as top 50. He has some nice aspects (movement, overhead, willingness to volley) but ground strokes doesn't impress and as even Pat McEnroe said after the match - no big weapon.
Statk. (whose name I can't spell...) said some nice things after and also unusually candidly and accurately "he has a huge amount of work to do" before anyone can get a real gauge on his prospects. I think that's exactly right and we don't do these kids any favors by hyping them. (See Oudin...)
