Tough one but I think my money would also be on Safin.

If they both played their absolute peak tennis then it possibly swings in favour of Stan....as we know though, Stan's absolute peak whilst phenomenal is rarely seen and whilst a similar argument can be made for Safin, I do feel the gap between his best and worst tennis was somewhat less than that of Stans.

Good matchup! On hard courts I would favor Safin slightly. On clay, Stan.

On grass, toss up (they both kind of suck).
