Sampras - Federer will surpass me

Thiem was putting a hell of figth against Nadal this US Open. You have a simplistic Nadalovic hater mind: "If X player stops Nadalovic at Slams and wins the whole trophy, he is not a weak player. If he loses, he is a weak player". There is no grey in your mind, everything is white or black. For you, it would be the same if Nadal had destroyed Thiem 6-1, 6-0, 6-1. It doesn't matter that Thiem almost defeated Nadal in a 5 sets match. This is a typical hater mentality. Does it mean that Federer was a weak player at the AO 2009 final because he lost to Nadal in 5 sets? You also criticize Thiem for not beating Nadal at Roland Garros. How many times dos Federer beat Nadal at Roland Garros?

Thiem's best surface is clay, Fed's WORST surface is clay. You know what, just remove all other chatter. Answer me this:

Out of thousands upon thousands of tennis pros since Djokovic turned pro, how many that is 3yr+ YOUNGER than Djokovic made slam finals? Just 1, Thiem at RG18. I'm NOT even asking for winners, just finalists! You STILL thinks these young guns are strong?

Federer WAS terribly weak player at 2009 AUS Open. Choked like mad and gave away the match with terrible mentality. Players have different phases. It's not all black and white as you say. Nadal was terrible choker for two years before 2017. Now he is still more human then in his best years, but now he gets over his bad choking return phases quicker and gets his act together sooner. Still those terrible volley mistakes and blunders that he has made throughout this Open are not something that peak Nadal would have been guilty of.

Comparing womens slam count to mens is without any meaning. Womens competition is clearly weaker and slams are far easier to rack up. It is far easier for Margaret Court or Steffi Graf to stay long time far ahead of the competition.

Simon,

No-one's talking about Nadal winning a Grand Slam, or being one of the greatest players ever.

You're right, it isn't even a rivalry, because Federer is so clearly superior to Nadal, owning 3 of the last 4 GS. Owned. And if Nadal gets to the Wimby finals, Federer will clean his clock. Remember, Federer also had a losing record to Hewitt, and we all know how that ended up.

Nadal won't win any GS outside of clay as long as Federer plays. And his game is so physically demanding and injury-prone that he'll probably have to retire by the time he's 24 or 25 -- Federer's current age -- due to burnout.

If Sampras was surpassed by his Next Gen, while Nadal and Djokovic are not surpassed by their Next Gen, it has an easy explanation. Nadal and Djokovic have more longevity, and are much better in their 30s than Sampras in his 30s. I am sorry but 2018 Nadal or Djokovic would have destroyed 2002 Sampras at Wimbledon.
They may well be but that doesn't entail that the younger gen doesn't suck more than previous next gen's. Also, beating Sampras at 2002 ain't that impressive

Talk about a prediction that looks off by 10 years or so.

*3 USO.

Or do you think Djokovic will give Nadal this USO?

It's Djokodal-gen's job to stop Hewitt/Safin/Roddick/Federer/etc., not the other way around, and it worked out mostly except they can only slow Federer. Dimitrov-gen's job is to stop Djokodal-gen; they failed miserably.

Federer-gen DID stop Samprass/Agassi/etc. Sampras-gen wasn't allowed to achieve much once Federer-gen matured.

Instead of bashing the younger guys why you don't use that instead to appreciate how good Federer, Nadal and company actually were/are?

I am doing both; praising Fedalovicray AND criticizing all players 28yrs old and younger. 28yo!

You mean to tell me we should all overlook the fact that all 28yo and younger pros are under-performing? You don't see that tennis is looking to be very dire once Fedalovicray retires? The 28yo and younger should be ruling tennis now and pushing them out by winning, not by waiting them out.

There will be a new normal and life will go on and people will realize that those guys were too good to just be "pushed out" similar to the way how no one is pushing out Ronaldo and Messi. Or no one has pushed out Tom Brady and Drew Brees, and Peyton Manning would have probably been there too if not for nerve damage.

In the future people will look back at it similar to the 70s heavyweight boxing scene with the multiple legends all at the same exact overlapping time period.

I get what you're trying to say, but comparing individuals from team sports to individuals from a solo sport is not a good comparison.

Look at it this way: Take out Fedalovicray. Who are left? Well, we still had prime Tsonga, Berdych, Safin, Hewitt, Ferrerro, Gaudio, Coria, Blake, Roddick, late-prime-Wawrinka, Delpo, Cilic etc. We haven't seen this caliber of players starting from Dimitrov-gen and they have even weaker fields to contend with and still couldn't rise. Dimitrov showed glimpses 1 or twice every 2 years. I guess 2018 is a 'down' year for Dimi bc his 2018 is so bad so far.

The new 'normal' you're referring to is looking bleak, but at least current NextGen showed some promise. Would be nice if they pan out. It's bad enough that almost all top100's play the same style.

You're naturally going to see a lot of wrong predictions, brutally so even, in threads this old. Federer's era of dominance being over is just as funny as the quote that revived this thread when you consider the date it was written. And @2011 also has a very good point about USO court speed. The USO is slowed down so much that it's obvious to the naked eye how much difference there is, and even Wimbledon is slower now than it was in the early-mid 2000's.

I'm just saying it's a bit amusing to see the predictions they made back then, but I was not surprised since it was posted in 2006, which was very early to predict Nadal and Djokovic's rise in tennis.
Anyway, who do you have your money on in the USO final? I'm thinking Novak will win, but I would love to see DelPo win another slam, as he's quite hardworking and really deserves it. :)

3 years is not that much. 5+ years should be the difference.

That was certainly a terrible prediction with Nadal now having 17 Majors. Especially given his style of play, it is remarkable he came back from a slump and returned to Major winning form. He also became a more aggressive player.

By the way, anyone who had predicted even that Nadal would end up with 11 (!) French Opens and 17 Majors back then or that Federer would end up with 20, would have been laughed at. Even as Federer was taking Djokovic into the 5th set at Wimbledon 2015 and to four sets at W2014 and USO2014, and was the only player to beat him in 2015, people were completely dismissing the possibility that he could still win more Majors.

People were also dismissing Nadal winning more Majors after a two-year slump.

Yeah they both silenced their critics over and over time again. That just goes to show us not to underestimate two of the greatest tennis players ever in history.

Btw, a while ago I read this interesting article (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...-Federer-win-seven-times-receive-100-000.html) and (https://www.express.co.uk/sport/tennis/255459/Nick-Newlife-bequests-a-Fed-bet), where this guy predicted Federer becoming one of the greatest! He was probably a time traveler... guess we'll never know :)
