Scrap the Roofs -bring back proper Wimbledon

Today was an absolute farce. The favourite for the women's title going out because she slipped on the court; the 8 times men's champion going through because his opponent slipped on the court. All most probably because of conditions caused by the closing of the blasted roofs.

What a gong show.

They should never have built any roofs at Wimbledon. The tournament thrived for well over a century as an OUTDOOR daylight hours tennis tournament. Grass courts don't belong indoors and roofs don't belong at Wimbledon. Even if getting rid of them means having to put up with an afternoon of Cliff Richard singing a cappella and a repeat screening of the 1980 tie-break on loop, it's a price worth paying to get the proper tournament back!

Scrap them!

Agreed, but heaven forbid we have to work around nature...

Scrap grass altogether. Tennis today is meant to be played on clay and hard courts.

Wimbledon Tradition? That went out the window with lights and roof. Time to do away with grass.

You're an idiot. Things evolve over time. A hundred years ago, there was no high tide in Miami. It is now a recurring things in Miami. Either adapt or become extinct like dinosaurs.

It has even destroyed the iconic look of the Centre Court. It was a thing of beauty. History preserved In aspic. Now the proportions are destroyed. You wouldn't stick a retractable roof on the colosseum, don't stick it on the centre court!

Was the Centre court built in 70 AD?

Yeah, no roof and then witness rain delays one after another.

Wimbledon Tennis needs to be played outdoors.

The colosseum was built in 70 AD. Centre Court was not built that long. Therefore, your logic is flawed.

I'm not a fan of the roof, either. But I mean . . . they ain't gonna scrap it.

I think it has more to do with making the necessary adjustments when the roof closes. Maybe you wait a while longer before starting play and try letting the court dry out a bit more before starting play? And maybe the players have to make adjustments, as well. Knowing that it becomes a more hazardous surface once the roof closes.

I bet most TTers would have a fit if there were total rainouts and nothing to watch - which used to be the norm that, while, frustrating, everyone dealt with. People (collectively, not each and every individual) are impatient, addicted to convenience, varying levels of entitled ("I paid for Tennis Channel, how dare there be no coverage"). There's no way they'd ever get rid of having roofs on some courts. Plus I'm sure the networks paying for TV rights really like guaranteed live coverage.

Ah yes, let's bring back the Wimbledon of yore where you'd get three straight days of "classic" matches thanks to consecutive rainouts. Time moves on, you should too.

Yeah but the Colosseum did have a retractable shade / Velarium, which wasn't exactly a roof but still did protect audiences from the elements:
