Djokovic says Serbia poised to stage first ATP event

MADRID, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Serbia is set to host its first ATP tournament after Novak Djokovic and his family bought the rights to the 2009 Dutch Open, the world number three said on Wednesday.
The family now need the all-clear from the ATP board in order to stage the event in Belgrade.
"We closed out the deal with ... the Dutch Open and we bought the licence to have a tournament in Serbia," Djokovic told reporters after reaching the third round of the Madrid Masters when Romanian Victor Hanescu retired injured in the third set.
"It is still not 100 percent. We still need to do some administrative work in the next couple of weeks, next couple of months.
"Towards the end of the year we will know if we have a tournament," added the Serb.
The event would be held in the same week on the calendar, in early May.
A spokesman for the ATP Tour declined to comment but did say that any proposal had to be approved by the board when they meet in Shanghai during next month's season-ending Masters Cup.

Ohh that sucks. The crowd would be probably boo the hell out of any player that is playing against a serbian player.

Probably. They could learn that kind of behavior from the experienced US Open crowd.

The US open crowd is not that bad at all. A certain ___ from serbia turned them against himself.

Come on let's not make this thread about the US Open crowd. US Open crowd in general ain't that bad and they responded to something Djokovic said, which wasn't smart but understandable as well, etc. I wonder what the crowd would be like, but anyways, it's nice they would get an event, they are a big nation in modern tennis. Would it be a WTA tournament as well?cause in WTA tennis they're even bigger.

Heard this for a while back,it would be amazing but I'm not gonna get too excited until it finnaly happens as it's not yet 100% certain.I also heard that Nikola Pilic will be director of the tournament, that would be a good choice IMO.

And other crowds are generally different? Give me a break, the crowd's behaviour is very similar anywhere when the local player is playing.

Serbia is due for at least one pro tennis tournament. India at one point had too many events with even their top player boycotting home tournaments (Mirza). There were events in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata (WTA); Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai (ATP).

good for serbia. i'm sure tennis has exploded in popularity over there, ever since the serbian breakthrough this/last year on the tour. it will only get more popular. good for serbia, good for tennis.

For such an unknown country how did they make so many good players :p

How's a country unknown? Might be for you, but you could better use small cause that's more objective. People born in the area wouldn't call it unknown. Tennis probably is a popular sport in Serbia and whole former Yugoslavia?

Well then you're very ignorant, African people are usually nice.

:O

i'm sure you can't generalize all Serbians based on Jokers parents- who themselves are only confident of their son's ability

Ivanovic seems like a really sweet girl :)
