Sergio Tacchini has been bought out by an NYC private equity firm and has no new tennis designs. It’s really sad what has happened to Sergio Tacchini. They discontinued player contracts, have no connection to Italy where all their great designs came from and is just a brand name trading on it’s Italian designs from the the 70’s and 80’s.

My fave brand of all time, they are still popping out some of their ‘Archivio’ lines - it is sad to hear that they are not sponsoring players anymore. I though that with them still releasing the Monte Carlo Masters range earlier this year that they were gonna continue with new designs and releases.

It's so sad!
Thank goodness we still have Lacoste (the original tennis brand) still committed to our sport. Fred Perry, ellesse and now ST are lifestyle brands with no real soul. Personally I still love them all for what they mean to me.

To each their own, but Fila post-Borg has been one of my least favorite sponsors

They still produce some of their signature designs, and from time to time remind of their heritage with something nice and new. They are still alive, although living in the shadow of what they once were. Don't have the budget of the big brands either, so that reduces their influence slightly too.

It is strange to hear but Novak did a lot with his victories to kill ST.

I think that’s a bit unfair on Novak though. The bosses at Sergio gave him a contract with ‘performance bonuses’ that they could not fulfill if I remember correctly ?!

We still have Australian L'Alpina and Diadora from great Italians from the past, but they are mostly active in Italy.

I’m still buying a lot of L’alpina product - they are still made in Italy and are awesome designs. I’m playing tonight after work and have dug out a full L’alpina kit to put in my bag

Edited for photo of L’alpina I’m wearing tonight

Wait what? Nole brought them back from the dead and made them a champion label again! The problem was that the Hong Kong owner didn't have the infrastructure to keep up with Nole's success. A lot of retailers wanted the ST stuff that could not be deilivered.

I think BorgCash is trying to say the same thing we are about the situation. After reading it again :)

I seriously think that if the 80’s and 90’s Sergio Tacchini was making the same designs today Nike would be having serious competition. The designs are very simple but have great character and color combination, much better than the static colors 90% of the pros wear.

More nostalgia! Amoungst the most memorable include: Wilanders 1987 blue/green squiggly lines on the centre of the chest piece (87 USO, 88 AO/FO/W), in 2 colourways, his 1988 horizontal stripes from solid to fading style (88 USO), and cashies iconic red/blue/green solid horizontal stripes of varying width from wimby 1987. Cashie later had the black wavy lines with multiple coloured dots interspersed, then 1 with what appeared to be an italian statue head in 3 or 4 colours overlapping 1 another on the right chest area, then also a similar layout with a silhouette of himself pushing off with his left foot starting to run to his right or something similar. Those seemed to really show the personalities of the players, or at least give some nice color to the game. Oh what times they were!

This was not good news. I was hoping that some day they could reproduce the shirt with ultra-short sleeves, used by Mac some time around 83-84... Simple but fresh looking design. Oh well...

Cash was with ST since 1984 i think and almost till the end of his career.

I have seen those, they are not the same they used to be. At least the sleeves are longer now.
The current Sergio Tacchini people did not do a good job with the reissue of the New Young Line at all. They got all the proportions wrong. From the sleeve length, to how wide the stripe is on the shoulders.
The originals were awesome and my favorite Sergio Tacchini

I’ve bought a lot of those at 80sCC. They fit pretty well, but cut very slim. Occasionally they have a cool color, but they’ve never reissued the good Aussie green. I saw cash wear it. That was my fav. Instead they gave us pea soup green:

That’s not an original color. When the New Young Line first came out ST did it in pastel yellow and pastel powder light blue
I had the New Young Line in pastel powder blue along with the red, blue, and royal blue

I just loved the st back in the day and le coq, Fila and adidas but I missed out on Lacoste till later I’m life

It's funny how life is. Back in the 70's and 80's ST was dominating the market having the biggest names under contract. I can't recall one athlete from that era sporing the crocodile. Nowadays, Lacoste the OG tennis brand that is doing well....

Unfortunately both ST and Fila (Biella - Italy) no longer Italian brands; they passed into foreign hands (China and India-USA), with a consequent shift of production abroad.
Diadora was acquired by GEOX (Italy); however, a leading testimonial is missing to make it more visible.
First there was Gaudio, Liubicic, Becker, Courier, Kuerten

From what I know, ST was bought at the end of last year by a VC group from US. They got it from a Hongkonger that didn't do too much with the brand, even though his heart was in the right place. Fila was rescued/bought by its own subsidiary: Fila Korea. Since then, they are a force once again and can take on nike and adidas etc
Luckily, diadora and lotto are still in Italian hands. Hope they don't screw that up, hahahaha

Ellesse isn’t an Italian brand either anymore. At least we still have L’ Alpina Australian as Italian and made in Italy

L alpina is bomb .
Becker’s cable knitWimby Fila sweater vest was bomb
Edberg SE adidas was bomb
Nike McEnroe checkerboard was bomb
All Ellesse is bomb as long as the word ellesse patch has the old small lower case lettering with the ball on the opposite side
And ALL the sleeve lengths and shorts were all perfect length as well as length of crew socks were bomb .
I still dress this way . All my shorts I have tailored so that there all about 2 inches above my knee which is really quite short in reality as I’m only 5’7.
And I wear a 26 inch inseam . But especially on shorter folks longer shorts just look incredibly tacky and terribly oversized . I wish I didn’t have to spend additional $ on tailoring but I have no other choices .. I guess I could buy old school cotton tennis shorts but those are still a bit too short for even me :) plus I hate cotton on court
The last great dresser on court in the last years was Clemente !
But I must say Benoit wears the croc quite well , but that dude could pull of a garbage bag and make it look fantastic that mother #%^*er..

I wasn't even aware.

Best apparel of the 80s-90s by far.
