Seriously though...

It has gotten worse and worse. From not being able to win a slam anymore to not being able to win a title anymore.

Seriously. This was his best chance. An easy draw and his old pigeon in the final. the title should have been his. Normally he would win a title like this with his eyes closed.

If he cannot even beat his pigeons anymore than it is time to work hard

PS: Roddick would have loved to play this Federer. Too bad he retired so fast. It would have gotten at least a couple more wins

Maybe, like Roddick, Hewitt retires the year he beats Fed.

Lets not forget this "old pigeon" used to be #1 in the world and used to beat Fed regularly. I'm afraid some things can't be forgotten, even if you're an old pigeon.

Wasn't the H2H like 7-2 for Hewitt before Fed went on a massive win streak until Halle '11?

they're like the same age. Hewitt is a slam champion and former number 1 and has plenty of wins over Fed. It's not like some random scrub popped out of nowhere to beat Fed

Exactly. If you take it back into the junior days, Hewitt was even more dominant. Lleyton was rattled for a lot of years with various injuries. He hasn't forgotten how to beat top players.

yeah but let's face it Hewitt is past his best level.
2013 he has a record of 27 wins for 18 losses (including to guys like Seppi, Harrison, Brown, etc.)

If Fed is going to struggle with old washed up Hewitt, then I don't know how anyone can like his chances vs. Nadal/Nole/Murray/Delpo at the slams this year.

Hell I doubt he can even get by Ferrer

I always said Fed should have retired after Wimbledon 2012.. Go out at the biggest slam with the win. Because he has no chance anymore. Best way to cap off GOAT-like careers is with a bang. Not a whimper

Did any of you people watch the match? The end of that second set was some of the best tennis i have seen in a long time.

I'm not saying Fed hasn't gone down the pan somewhat, but Hewitt has never been Federer's "pigeon". He might have lost all those matches in a row at one point, but before that he led the h2h 7-2. He also only narrowly lost to Fed in a deciding set tie break when Fed was in his 2007 hard court prime.

Hewitt, on his day, is still a beast on most surfaces, as Del Potro found out last year at the US Open. It's not going into the realms of stupidity to suggest that, had Nadal been playing Hewitt in Brisbane today, Hewitt might have done him over three sets.

Quarters at best for Fed at the Aussie Open though. He's still good but he's not what he was.

When fit hewitt is competitive with any player out there. His problem has been injuries. Just have a look at the score lines he has had over the last few years against the top 4. He is rarely put away easily, if you can't be put away easily then some days you will win.

This is hogwash. You aren't giving any credit to Hewitt. He beat a 23 year old Nishikori in the SF, who has been playing awesome (and who beat 2011 Nole in Basal)

Here is what Fed had to say yesterday:

“I didn’t quite know what to expect from myself before the tournament. I played consistent, I must say. No breaks in the first three matches. Lleyton was the best player I played this week. He made it toughest on me, so I have a clear idea what I need to work on and I have a clear idea where my mind and body is.”

Federer's post match rhetoric is always calm and composed. It's only when he's on the court that he looks rattled
