Should new users be moderated?

Learner’s permits are how new drivers get to enjoy the privilege to drive. Maybe that kind of approach would work here, as in limit the amount of posts per day until the new user reaches an agreed upon threshold to prove he’s not a robot troll. Also, thread initiation could be restricted until that same threshold is met.

Something like this check wouldn’t exterminate the vermin but it would have certainly reduced the extent of the attack today. If you were here this morning on O&E for example, our disgruntled weirdo hit every thread we were active on, like the various word games some of the insomniac club members of the forum engage in with rapid fire responses. I thought he was stalking me until I saw the GPPD header and the MN attack thread title. I put him on ignore after about 5 minutes of his stream of spam started flowing and reported every post.

If TW did have a new user “governor” in place this morning, our pal would have gone through any reasonable daily limit in about 10 minutes and been left to sitting on his bed playing with his wet noodle and not bothering peeps he thinks offended him in his previous life.

You can talk all you want about adding moderators to fill in gaps in the existing moderators’ schedule but it wouldn’t be foolproof AND it’s going to be an expense TW may not want to absorb, particularly if they have been hurt financially over the last 18 months. If that’s the case we can either grin and bear the isolated idiot off his meds or we can look forward to footing the bill through a subscription of some sort. I’m guessing that option won’t be widely accepted. A free, no cost forum is pretty much a necessity to keep the census up at its present numbers.

Kills flow of participation for new users. I know if my first 50 comments took hours to show up, I wouldn't bother coming back to the forum.

The better solution is more moderators and IP banning (if they aren't already doing it on the IP). Why not use volunteers with a good post history to get more mods?

They are doing IP banning. And all due respect to current mods, more of them is a bandaid. Bandaids won’t work in a game of whack-a-mole. Take the gloves off TW.

They're back...c'mon we should at least moderate the FIRST post each new user makes. And then maybe use the limiting approach as @stringertom suggested. And yes there should be admins on 24/7. It's easy to ignore these imbeciles but I really want a better solution than that
