Should Tsonga shed some weight?

He's listed at 6'2" 201. I know he's always been stocky, but he's been lingering around the top 20 and doesn't seem to be progressing. Should he do like Mardy Fish and put more focus on fitness?

Unlike Fish, his extra weight is mostly muscle, not fat.

The ATP (and WTA) should go gluten-free. LoL.

Think of the fantastic matches we'll be seeing, tennis like its never been played. The entire field playing in God-mode. Federer's and Nadal's legacy obliterated in one or two tournaments ;)

Yes, he should. IMO, at pro level, the increased strength isn't worth the loss of mobility and the increased chances of injury.

Almagro and Fish have improved a lot after shedding weight. Roddick's good results in 2009-2010 also came after losing weight...

Yeah I think it'd benefit him. Same for verdasco. Seems like he bulked up even more during the offseason

I think loosing a little weight couldn't hurt, he has a big frame to move around and that has contributed to his injury problems IMO.

I agree he should cut some weight. But he really cant cut too much even if he wanted, hes just a huge beastly guy.

Yeah, he's built like a tank.. I think he'd benefit a great deal from dropping 10 to 15.. he's not the quickest mover and if he was he'd probably be missing less. His game could only get better.

could he have bulked up because of that? I heard bulking up can help prevent injuries. with all his previous injuries, maybe he decided to workout more to help prevent future ones?

Why put on additional weight for his legs to support? Yes, he's a beast but many of his injuries have been to his lower body.

Tsonga is in great shape, but I agree he would do better if he lost some weight - all that muscle isn't helping his tennis much (if at all) and it is hard on the body to have that many more pounds of mass hitting the court at 10g's as he stops and cuts. His main problem is injuries (and an attackable backhand).

nahhh he's lovin the good life. it's obviously more important to him than getting into the kind of shape you need to be in to win majors.

I'm watching Tsonga now and he just doesn't look like a tennis player. He's got so much talent, but his added bulk isn't doing him much for favors. He's not slow, but his movement isn't really a strength either.

Well his serve is pretty massive now, bigger than I remember it being in 2008. He's hitting the high 130's quite often and sometimes even 140's.

His serve has always been good. At times his 1st serve % is a bit low. Solid serve, punishing forehand, good backhand, great touch at net. Flashy player to watch. But like most of the French players, he doesn't maintain focus.

If Nadal was truly injured in the 08 Semi's then he wouldn't be able to play. Face it. Tsonga won fair and square.

I agree, but it doesn't matter if he was truly injured or not. He was the lesser player and deserved to lose, period.

As for Tsonga, yes he should lose FAT. Nothing more.

Yes, for sure. Losing about 20-30 lbs would help him become much quicker and faster, plus he'd likely cut down on injuries big time going forward. All that weight puts tremendous force on your all your joints. His hips, knees, and ankles would respond to that loss of weight nicely. He would still be plenty strong and would not lose much power at all. In fact, it may even help his body's "torque" ability leading to great pace for him.

While hypothetically losing 20-30 lbs could help Tsonga's game, I have to wonder if it's practical for his body type. He's not fat by any means, but he doesn't have a slim body type like Monfils.

Even if he lost the weight, it may be a real struggle for him to stay at the weight, and that effort could end up detracting from his game.

Probably worth a shot for him though.
