So for everyone who's been hating on ATP Cup...

So much drama in these matches. I like. Shapo and djoker, medvedev and schwartzman, and ceuvas nearly walked off. J Murray choked match point against Australia. Bring on the drama and heated exchanges!

For me, in Pacific time zone, it's 3pm start in Sydney and 4pm start in Brisbane and 6pm start for Perth so it's all good here unless someone is working and might not get home until 5pm or so but not missing a tie entirely, perfect timing for east coast as well with 6-7 pm start with exception of Perth sessions. As for evening session it's no good, it's too late for us to watch an evening sessions.

Eastern Standard is 16 hours behind. So for yesterday's matches for example it was 10am Sydney and 6pm here the previous day.

The scheduling is insane to give 2 SF teams more than a day's rest when the their opponent gets less than 20 hours.

The ATP cup is very exciting but the timing is off. This is not supposed to be a grand Slam warmup. No way. They're running the risk of players becoming tired or contracting injury before AO. Look at how much Rafa and Nole are playing.

it's their choice, isn't it?
Federer decided not to play.
Rublev complains that by current rules he can't play. Joined by some other pros.
Zverev is in poor form and lost quickly.

Nadal has a history of playing GS without much warm-up, so probably nobody forced him.
Djokovic needs the points to close the gap vs Nadal, but he could be choosing to close that gap later in the season.

Then why did Rafa and Nole chase the appearance fee and show up to the ATP Cup? Fed was far wiser, opting to skip this pseudo-exo (yes, I know it has points). Fed's already on Laver practicing.

If Federer somehow gets that AO win, and Djokovic and Nadal burn out before then, I wonder how long the ATP Cup will last.

The tournament has been great, the concern is really just that having two of these tournaments eats into players’ already small off season.

And if Federer has a poor AO he'll probably play the ATP Cup next year :)

What’s the point of the ATP Cup? It doesn‘t seem like an AO warmup. And having the best players spread out over multiple cities just means sparse crowds at each site.

It means the crowds and fans are the ultimate winners. It will attract more fans and to allow them to see more tennis/meet more tennis players. That is the beauty of playing across different cities. IMO of course.

Got to agree, I have yet to watch a match yet, but I will get up at 5am to watch Rafa play Djoker tomorrow. Pretty crazy we get to see them play this close to Australian Open.

Could play a mental role at AO.

Not a fan of the multiple locations plus the prize money is very low. It could screw up the players chances at AUS Open. If I were a top 20 player, no way would I be in this tournament. Hats off to Fed and Stan.

That's because the best players are spread over several locations, but the total impact of the ATP Cup is gigantic compared to the Hopman Cup or any other non-slam for that matter....
The popularity of tennis will increase thanks to the widespread excitement surrounding the ATP Cup :)
And the players are treating it like a slam, because of the massive ranking points available if you win all your matches, so the level of tennis is outstanding.
I totally agree.

Another event where two of the big 3 are left standing at the end. BORING.

If that’s the case why aren’t the stand full at every match. I watched part of one of Djokovic’s matches and the stands were maybe 2/3rds full. And it can’t be because of the fires. If that was the case they wouldn’t even be playing matches.

Simple. No one can guarantee sold out sessions all the time. There can be multiple reasons, one of them could be the stupid amount of money they charge. This kind of defeats the purpose of trying to get people to attend the matches.....

There were half a dozen really excellent quality matches at this tournament. I think it's been a success, the Swiss absence notwithstanding. Plus some unheralded storylines unfolded with great performances by Hurkacz, Lajovic, and Evans. What I did get to watch was quite entertaining. I do agree with Djokovic and others that have complained about the Davis Cup/ATP Cup being a problem. It can be solved down the line, but overall I'd say this was tournament was a success.

I'd also make one change if I was the ATP, simply as an issue of fairness. Make this tournament a replacement for your 18th best score, rather than a 19th tournament only a small handful of players get to have access to.

I prefer the old Davis Cup for the history, the BO5 format, and the year-round scheduling where it's not all crammed into one event. The AO warm-up events were also an important part of the season.

But the ATP Cup is awesome. I think the scheduling is a problem but I can't trash the actual event.

I think giving points for any win in atp cup is unfair as it is not an equal opportunity tournament.
