Some Peak Fed Gems

I know a better version of this has been posted before, but this was an incredible, incredible match, and I was lucky enough to see it live. The stadium was a bit dead after the Blake/Agassi match, but this is one of Federer’s best matches ever.

1. The movement is ridiculously good. Nalbandian is hitting well as always here, but Federer is catching up to everything.

1a. Look at the FHs at 7:10 and 7:30. He gets to those balls as if it’s nothing and then unleashes vicious FHs.

2. The BH was so solidly good. The depth, the defense...it was incredible how much better it had gotten under Roche’s tutelage. Nalbandian even commented on it after the match and mentioned how Federer had “played too fast with the BH,” an ultimate compliment from the BH god himself.

3. Supreme confidence. Nalbandian had won so many close matches with Federer in their youths and a few blowouts as well but here, Federer looks supremely confident right from the start as befitting a GOAT at his peak.

4. Miss the old USO acoustics without the roof. The roof is a necessary thing, but the old acoustics and NYC skyline views were great,

Nalbandian was pretty bad in this match though.

Really though, we should have peak performance threads for all of the Big 3. If you just appreciate the tennis here there's no need for obvious troll posts so it would be better if some Djokovic fan posted a thread about his peak performances and if a Nadal fan done the same. Really, this thread is a credit to the forum and the amount of time and effort people put in to find full Federer matches, and we should have like minded threads about all 3 guys.

Wow, major props to @NatF. One match I have been wanting to see forever. Another one being Hewitt-Roddick Cincy 2005, also uploaded by him.

He has a talent for finding matches that cannot be found.

If he finds Hewitt-Roddick Wimb 2009, he is by far the hero tennis fans need. :D

Yeah, I remember Hewitt demolishing Roddick in the SF. He won some insane string of points at a certain time in the match didn't he? And he also had a habit of reading Roddick's serve really well.

@ghostofMecir Great post! In 2005 when you saw Fed play live, did you have any inkling of how amazing he would become? I first saw him play live in 2003 and thought he'd win multiple slams, but never dreamed of 20. No way, never entered my head. What were your thoughts about Roger during this match? I bet anything you thought, "damn, that FH is wicked." ?

Well, at this point, he was on his way to his 6th slam, but I didn’t think anyone would ever win 20. I didn’t think anyone would win 18 which was a “WTA number” to me, i.e., Matina’s and Evert’s number if slams. What’s stunningly amazing is that he really very well could have 23+ right now with literally a few bounces of the ball. He’s lost 3-4 times as many matches “he should have won” as won “matches he should have lost.”

In this match, I was awed by his improved BH. His footwork to his BH side was improved so much by Roche and he was so confident in this match when the matchup itself had lent itself to him NOT being confident against Nalbandian because of the Argentine’s incredible early, clean hitting and his BH that usually pinned Federer to his own BH. In this match, I saw Fed hold his own in CC BH exchanges and even dictate against Nalbandian’s otherworldly fluid BH, never looking flustered or frustrated and looking supremely confident throughout, even when Nalbandian broke him early twice in sets, which was surprising since Nalbandian still led 5-2 H-to-H against Fed coming into this match. Nalbandian’s first comments were about that BH.

As someone who caught on a bit later in Fed's career, I have to say this thread is a gift. Some of the videos are unavailable now, curiously, but Fed's shotmaking back in the day was pure bliss. Hats off to OP and other contributors.

I already did quite a bit of catching up myself (mostly via Yoeri's channel), but these are some matches I never even knew existed.

It's quite a shame some trolls from the Djokovic fanbase have decided to open a can of worms here.

Irony of fate: I remember casually watching this very broadcast in Germany when I lived there. Strangely, I wasn’t yet a fan of tennis.
Now I live in Houston and am a member of that very club!
