Spent yesterday hitting with Mats Wilander - not a bad Saturday...

Had a very fun day yesterday hitting with Mats. He was in my hometown area town doing his Wilander on Wheels tour and I happened to be in the area so I decided to swing by. I did the clinic and then hit with Mats and his partner/pro Cameron (who's a great guy and hits a real nice ball) and had a great time.

Had myself five other pretty high level guys for the clinic and they ran our butts off - which was great. Two courts going - three or four guys on a court at a time working with either Mats or Cameron and switching back and forth. Lots of point play - some dubs and big attention to footwork. The same kind of drills and stuff Mats runs with the Swedish Davis Cup team etc. When the first drill they run is called "The Heart Attack" you know what you are in for...And Mats and Cameron jump right in with you on every drill and points being played. Kinda cool being dubs partners with Mats or trying to rip a return off a seven time Grand Slam winner.

Went out to dinner with Mats and Cameron and a few of the other guys afterwards and spent the evening talking tennis and life. A real pleasure to talk to and a fun guy all around - same with Cameron. I can't say enough about these guys and the experience and I'm going to hook up with them when they hit LA in a couple weeks as well.

Do yourself or your club a favor and get in touch with them and arrange them to come for a visit. You won't be sorry.

That is too cool DNShade. Great life experience! Good for you. You're very lucky. Mats Wilander was unique and so talented. He was a great tactician and athlete out there and I'll never forget the run he made when he won the 1988 US Open, when he beat Lendl in 5 sets. He seemed so focused to me during that match (see highlights below).

Yeah. Really great guy. We talked a bit about that match and about the epic 82 Davis Cup match with JMac in St. Louis. Mats and JMac are really good friends now. They are actually playing each other Thursday night in Boston.

Mats seems was just built for tennis. Cameron - the other pro and Mats partner was telling us about how Mats never really sweats. Cameron will be out there working his butt off and look over at Mats and he's been going twice as hard and still doesn't have one drop of sweat on him. Mats told a story about one of his French matches where at the changeover of a long match the other guy was changing shirts - his shorts were soaked etc...Mats looked at himself and felt bad that he looked so pristine...so he changed his wristband...

Awesome. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll need to keep a look out about him. Thanks.

What a really great experience ... so how did you handle hitting with the great Wilander ... were you really uptight and rattled ... tell us about how he hits the ball ... lot of pace ... heavy ball ... top spin ... how was his serving ... sooooo lucky ... good for you!

Wilander is the most under-rated pro of our era. He won three of the four slams. He was always tough to beat. I can't think of any weapons he had that were the best in the world. What he did so well was hitting so many balls and being tough mentally. We'd all do well to emulate Mats Wilander.

That's a great experience you had there. I'm sure Mats could have won Wimby if it was as slow in the eighties as it is now.
