String mains with 2 starting clamp only

Hi,
I just got my 2 GSS starting clamp,
I'm wondering if we can string all the mains
with just the 2 starting clamp?
The rational for doing this?
GSS is the best clamp out there right?
So, using it for main, will keep the tension better
than the usual fixed/flying clamps rights?

Anyone done it before?

Irvin,
Why not? Will this work?

1st starting clamp at R1,
tension R2,
clamp R2 with 2nd starting clamp,
tension R3,
clamp R3 with 2nd starting clamp

tension L1,
clamp L1 with 1st starting clamp
so on.......

The starting clamp has no way to hold a string unless you clamp it against the frame on the outside. If you clamp R1 with the starting clamp you can't tension R2 without taking the clamp off R1.

Not ideal, but still possible to pull tension on all mains.

T=Top
B=Bottom or Throat

Assuming 16 mains starting from throat:
Clamp R1B inside the hoop against the grommet
Fill L1B, L1T, L2T, L2B
Pull tension on L2 (double string pull, so pull tension twice?)
Clamp 2nd starting clamp on L2T inside hoop against grommet
Repeat for all

It's how to clamp the last two outer mains for the tie-off that i cannot figure out for now...

Not impossible, but I wouldn't do it ;)

Why would he not want to use the machine clamps that came with his machine?

Some may think the GSS clamps is the best starting clamp out there but there's a real good reason no one is ever going to try what you suggested. The starting clamp is good for a lot of uses and two is better than one. There's also a reason starting clamps are much cheaper than machine clamps.

EDIT: Just curious I see you've been a member for over 5 years but have you ever strung a racket before?

Irvin is correct, there are many uses for starting clamps, but stringing mains with just starting clamps is not done. You need at least one machine clamp, with a starting clamp, and 2 machine clamps is even better.

I'll have to have a talk with Mr10sStringer and see is he has a half set of string and 15 minutes to throw away.

Hi Irvin,
I just started stringing & post the question out of curiosity, not to challenge the stringing veterans here :)

You have great enthusiasm. But what you propose just won't work.
Sometimes seeing is the best way to learn so just grab a scrap piece of string
and try it out. It'll make other things more clear too, perhaps.

Enjoy and keep at it.

Yes, I agree,
it will help me understand more,
I will test it out & see,
thanks for the feedback everyone!

I pretty much guessed that. When most of us start out string we do a lot of different things just to see what happens and to break up the boredom I still do.
