String patterns

So we have 16 x19 and 18x20 as the two main string patterns. However we have some variations here and there.
Add a bit of control to 16x19 then 16x20 or open up a bit more 16x18.
Open up an 18x20 a bit then 18x19. Wilson even tried the spin racquets with more mains but less crosses 18x16
Why don’t we see a 17x19 so a bit more control on mains from 16? Can’t say i’ve seen that one or am i wrong?

I think there was. I like the odd number of mains concept. It had me wondering if there ever was a racquet with a main down the center or even worse an extra main on one side of the racquet vs. the other!!!

17 mains? You will have a non symmetrical pattern. If you have a racket with a throat you will have to have an odd number of grommet holes and the center main will be dead center in the middle of the frame where the 6&12 supports are on most tourney machines. Houston we have a problem! One main ties off at the head and the other in the throat.

Didn’t consider stringing machines to be honest! but yes a main dead center

Exactly, I was just goofing around with my odd number of main suggestion when I saw the original post had a typo with an odd number of mains but I see there have been some made in the past per up above.

I wonder how they would play.

Is the number of the mains on the throat part of this conversation too? :giggle:
I have realised that 16x19 with 6 at throat too open for me. So I like 16x19 with 8 at throat in that pattern. Lol

For the racquets I mentioned above, you have to mount it so the 12 billiard is 1 side of the centre main, while the 6 billard will be the other. Yes, with 2 piece 1 side is tied at the top, the other side at the bottom. If stringing one piece this isnt an issue; but the SS must be on the correct side. The other things with those racquets is that they had staggered stringing

That must be the odd-number-mains string patterns never caught on.

What about a Power Angle racquet with diagonally strung pattern? The strings last longer and some variety to your stringing skills.

Have you strung one on a glide bar machine? Seems like the SS could be on either side and would tie off at the bottom but then both knots would be in the same area when finished so you better make sure there are 2 tie off grommets in that corner.

@uk_skippy I believe I made a mistake, even if there are 17 mains there still must be an even number of grommets in the throat. Racket engineer nightmare. Easy to confuse a stringer too.

We could discuss for centuries about differences between string patterns. For sure there are trends that everybody knows but this is mostly theory. The truth is that how the racquet plays depends on many parameters and there is more to see about string patterns than just the number of mains and crosses. Some 16x19 will play very tight while a few 18x20 will feel like a 16x19. My current racquet is a 16x20 and it plays softer and more spinny than many 16x19 I played before. I think you should not exclude a racquet of your demo list just based on the string pattern.

Have had the same experience with my Prince Textreme Tour 100P. It's an 18x20 but very open spacing giving it as much if not more spin potential than many 16x19's I've played with. Patterns can really only be evaluated by taking into account the spacing as well.

Good call. TT100P was also 6 mains in throat if I recall and definitely the most open pattern 18x20 I have ever played with. Almost same as some 16x19 I had at the time.
