String tension question

1. Stringing tension between different gauges but same string. I like to string yonex poly 17g at 50lbs. What tension for yonex poly 16g?
2. Thinking about going back to a multifilament. What tension is a good starting point for me to try for a 16g multifilament, if I like yonex poly 17g at 50lbs? Also what tension for a 17g multifilament is a good starting point?
Thanks

generally about 3bs less...
depending on the difference in dynamic stiffness (between the two gauges) and gauge actual size. example some 16g could be 1.33, 1.29, 1.20 ...some 17g could be 1.25 or 1.20

multis can have a good spread in there stiffness values, so i can not just generalize a tension for a multi.
But they can go somewhat higher depending on there elasticity and stiffness ..
but you don't want to over stretch the filaments ............

I would assume you would prefer the same string bed stiffness no matter which string you're using. Why not play around with the online Stringway Tension Advisor?

Very good observation from our pal CopolyX in terms of gauges. Different brands will label their strings as a certain gauge, but the actual measurement might vary a bit. Try to be aware of the actual measurements.

With that in mind, it's hard to say what tension will be right if you're switching from 17 ga. to 16 ga. poly. You could be making a leap from 1.20mm string up to 1.30mm, but maybe a bit less depending on the labels. Depending on the string, a drop of 3 lbs. may be right, but you'll only know after you try it. You might like the extra firmness and not want to drop tension at all, but if the thicker stuff is much more stiff, you may want to drop perhaps 5 lbs. Trial and error should sort that out.

As for switching to multi, that's a tough call. You might simply want to tension that string right in the middle of the recommended range for that racquet just to give you a starting point. If you prefer a little firmness in the feel of your string bed, maybe install that multi at a pound or two above the mid-range tension.

Not sure if this is right. Pulling 50# on a 1.20 mm string is going to result in a stiffer string bed than pulling 50# on a 1.30 mm string, all else being equal. If you want same SBS, then you need to increase the tension when pulling the 1.30 mm string.

Just recently, I moved from poly/synthetic gut to multi to synthetic gut. I kept the same tension and really didn't notice much difference. So my advice would to be change one thing at a time, in your OP, it's the string.

I want to go from Yonex poly 17g 125 to 16g 130. So a good starting point would be to string about 3 lbs lower for the 16g?

The multifilament is tierone triumph. I got both the 16g and 17g.
Not sure what is a good tension to try for both gauges?
But would it be more suitable to lower the 16g a few lbs vs the 17g?

It won't feel the same, as the thinner string, will have a higher resonating frequency, even if you lower the thicker string, the deflection rate won't be the same either. 17g multi should be strung tighter than a poly, as it is softer and deflects more.
