Swing over Shoulder?

I don't understand why end up with the racquet over the shoulder, what does the pulling backwards motion do? Is it just part of a long, full swing?

Does finishing over the should psychologically make us swing fuller or something because I don't see why it ends over the shoulder.

I'm asking because I have tons and tons of pace but not super topspin and maybe it is because I don't swing over my shoulder but I was curious why does that create more spin

You don't have to finish over your shoulder - if you move up using the shoulder a lot - you will finish over the shoulder. Some players don't lift so much from the shoulder - the instead use internal rotation and thus the racquet finishes low. Most use a combination of both and it often finishes around but not over the shoulder. Your finish is just an extension of how you swing-- so if you are hitting the kind of ball you want the height of your finish isn't a problem..
