Any thoughts on the app. I downloaded it a long time back and it wasn't really too good, but looks a bit better in line calls and such. The speed calcs look way off often though. Anyone using it recently. Think it is, or was like $99 a year.

This channel uses it a lot.

Seems pretty cool. I think it low balls serves some - but it looks cool to me. Gonna try it out soon.

Thought it was a device that is worn on the arm or racquet. That would be better. But it just uses video...

This serve hits more than three feet up on the fence. It says this serve is 82 mph. Is that about right? My flat serves hit one foot up at 80 mph.

Guess I will have to give it a go. I like the idea of having stats for matches, just to get a general picture of play. I wonder if you can edit the data points if it gets something wrong though. That would be useful. Not as much interested in speed accuracy, but some of the guestimates seem way off for the app. I would hope it was like +/- 5mph, but I see some big serves show up at like 36mph and they are obviously wrong doing a simple frame calc.

I feel like it low balls serves - and I think frame calculations give higher numbers then it does. But not going to spend the time to see if that is the case.. It does a decent job with just one camera I think. You would need to coordinate multiple cameras like playsight to get good numbers.

I just watched 6 minutes of this video and didn't see a single instance where they both hit a ground stroke. Very strange game.

If I can't hit like a 4.0, I dial down to 3.5 to keep the ball in instead of committing suicide. Anyone else like that?

I gave it a go for you today. They continuously add features so it would've changed a lot since you used it.

Impressions, it works best if you mount it high enough that it can see the opposite service line directly (ie not viewing through the net). This is pretty high on the fence so not easy, especially as you can't really see the screen. Works just ok with the front selfie camera. If you have apple watch and iphone you can use watch as a viewfinder and start and stop controller. Also adds the session to your fitness app as a workout.

You need to pay for hd or highframerate videos and some of the analysis, I think it can give you stats and cut out the junk time automatically in between points.

On the 6 or so serves I tested it on it was pretty accurate on serve type and placement in court, although it drastically undervalued the speed of my (warmup) serve, only 75mph my hat, they must have been 130+ ;)

IMO if you are into recording your matches, match stats you'd be mad not to use it, it is a fantastic app and well worth the price. As accurate as you could expect it to be and generally very accurate on type of shot hit. Big thumbs up from me (y)

Thanks for the response.

Is it an in-app purchase then, and an additional yearly fee?
Does it do 4k yet (though that would be dang impressive to process 4k in real-time for stats, so I doubt the phones can do it yet)?

I'm not a piad member. When i got it it was free app, then monthly or yearly fee, $AU120 per year I think.

Don't know about the 4K I think they do 60FPS. They give an update just about every month but I don't always pay attention to it.

You record it, process in their cloud and it gives you the abbreviated shots only video and stats

I believe it measures the speed average of the ball from racquet to racquet and not the speed that it leaves the racquets (like on TV).

They've mentioned that the speeds are still a work in process. I recently paid for it and overall it does pretty well. I noticed it had a tough time tracking the ball really close to the net as I hit a short angle that it placed about a foot deeper into the court on the graphic.

It is fun though. Can select things like 'all rallies over 5 shots', 'furthest run in a rally', etc.

I fellow player recommended this to help train. Worth the money?
Depends on what you’re hoping to “train”. If it’s just technique, it is probably not worth the expense since you can get better footage by video recording yourself at better camera angles.

But if you’re looking for feedback on your ball placement, overall court positioning, stats, and reviewing how you play. It is worth every penny. Honestly, the time-savings alone from the auto-edit feature, cutting out the time between points/shots, is worth the investment.

Personally, I have found it most helpful for these:
  • Tracking match stats (only if you use the score tracking function with Apple Watch) for my own data analytics (general progression, impact of strings, racket specs on performance)
  • Shot selection and court positioning
  • Improving movement and positioning when approaching the net for volleys/overheads
  • Feedback on tactics, whether I implemented my game plan
  • Improving serve technique
  • Split-step timing
  • Scouting opponents, preparing a game plan (only if we’ve played once together or their on SwingVision too)
