Taylor Fritz in Memphis Open

Well, was a spirited match. Taylor Fritz beat a spirited Johnson in two tight sets (7-6/7-6) - to me he seems very clutch. Remains cool in key points which is huge. I already like his potential and talent. Barring injury, I see him going places. Cant say that for any other young American sadly.

Was wondering what the rest of the TTW forum members thought of the match? Any signs of strengths/weaknesses/symptoms in Fritzs game you would like to talk about?

Cheers.

I have seen him a few times now. There is tremendous potential. Has lots of areas to improve, but he is one to watch out.

I was reminded of Raonic's runs during 2010-11 at San Jose, Memphis, etc.,

I agree. I also think he could most definitely improve in the movement and timing department perhaps.

He's like a "Mini Raonic" with a more consistent backhand and better movement for his size. I'd like to see them two clash one day. He's even in the election for best hair with Raonic:cool:

He is stuck to the baseline too much for my liking. I hope he learns from Raonic to attack at the end.

His ground strokes and mental strength are pretty good for his age and experience.

Great potential! Let's hope he moves up the rankings soon. We need these young players to blossom quickly.

Fritz and Zverev are looking most impressive of all the other youngsters IMO. I think this year they will jump up from the young bunch. Fritz looks even more mature than Zverev.

Why isn't this thread over on the "Pro Match results" forum?

I don't think you are supposed to give away results of current tournaments here in the general competitive tennis thread. (Perhaps I'm wrong?)

I might be wrong but I thought it was for current matches being played? I only talked about it after the match was done. I'm still learning the ropes (relatively) myself.

To all: if I am wrong, please let me know and I will request admin/moderator to transfer this thread over.

He could improve his BH with a better slice, for variation, and obviously his net play can improve hugely.

Regarding spoilers: some of us record matches when we are working or sleeping. ;)

Very good FH, first serve, decent BH , solid movement for a guy his size and very important - mentality of a great future player. I'm impressed with this kid.

Better BH than any US male since Agassi/Fish. Very simple, smooth serve motion - got into the 120s and can easily add 10mph as he gets stronger (and gets a little more out of his legs). I didn't see all of the Becker match but he seemed quite relaxed. Encouraging.

I might be wrong too! My impression is that to avoid 'spoilers' that specific match results shouldn't be posted outside the Pro Match forum. I presume that some people might tape a match and watch it a number of hours later. Since forum members are from around the globe they live in different time zones. As well, others might be at work (or other personal pursuits) and want to watch it later.

Again, I might have misinterpreted the goals on this forum, but I have presumed to be safe that it is best to post specific results only in the Pro Match forum until WELL after.

Still love the fact that you are posting here and are into the outcome and opportunity for Fritz!!

Exciting to see someone as young as him finally make some noise in the game. Yeah, it's only a small 250 event, but it's still nice to see.

Nice play from him this season. Hopefully he uses his new found top 100 ranking wisely.
Anyone have highlights from the Berankis match?
