Tennis Australia will accept Bernard Tomic life ban

Tennis Australia will accept Bernard Tomic life ban
By Leo Schlink
February 02, 2009 TENNIS Australia will throw Bernard Tomic to the wolves even if the star junior is given a life ban from the Pro Tour circuit for walking off court in Perth in December.

Tennis Australia's director of player development Craig Tiley declared Tomic would not receive any support from officials if the ITF bars the 16-year-old prodigy from the Pro Tour.

Such a ban would not prevent Tomic contesting ATP or grand slam events, but eviction from the Pro Tour's Challenger and Futures events would block the Queenslander's bid to improve his ranking.

TA's hardline stance comes amid revelations an official at the Sorrento futures event filed a police complaint against a player's parent.

WA police confirmed a complaint had been lodged on December 2 and investigated, but would not name the parent.

A spokesperson said no action was taken and the report was forwarded to TA.

John Tomic was ordered to make a public apology by TA for forcing his son to default the match and has privately described the experience as the most humiliating of his life.

Bernard Tomic was fined $1350 for walking off court during the second-round match when trailing Marinko Matosevic.

The youngster could be charged with aggravated behaviour by the ITF, an offence which could lead to a Pro Tour life ban.

Tomic will rise to about 550th in the new rankings and will probably be selected to make his Davis Cup debut for Australia against Thailand next month.

But his immediate fate rests in the hands of London-based ITF officials.

"Two things with that. John Tomic's copped his penalty from us in a public apology. Then also we're not going to defend the ITF's decision," Tiley said.

"Quite often what happens is that the ITF makes a decision which is pretty harsh. Then the national federation comes in and tries to overturn it. We've told the ITF we're not going to be doing that.

"So whatever the ITF's decision is, we're supporting it."

Tomic walked off court after being ordered to do so by his father, who had repeatedly accused officials of not taking action against Matosevic's alleged foot faults.

An argument ensued after the match between John Tomic and officials.

Tiley said the Tomic's had been counselled and he did not expect a repeat of the behaviour.

"John knows and Bernard knows that (defaulting) is against the rules," Tiley said.

"You don't walk off the court without a reason. You get punished for that and you get penalised for that.

"And then you don't talk about the officiating after the match or talk to the officials."

"You get penalised and punished for that - that's the rules of the game. We don't have jurisdiction over the parent, only the athlete."

Nah, not certain, we'll see. Hard to believe the penalty is so severe. I mean its like when a player tanks a match, they aren't given a life ban, just fined :D

Life ban, that's pretty tough for a first offence. They execute you for a second offence.

Why didn't he just retire with "flu-like symptoms" or a "sore throat" or "general soreness"? the officials seem to have no problem with people doing that when they are trailing. well, one particular person.

I shouldn't laugh at this, but it's funny.

I was surprised to see this, particularly since Australia had been complaining that there weren't enough players coming up post-Lleyton, and Tomic was supposed to be the Next Great Aussie Tennis Hope.

Interesting no response to the substantive issue of poor officiating/ not callin repeated foot faults.
Remember its the game that is important not that the better player wins. Criticize officiating. What could he have been thinking!

This is not his first offence. This is the second time he has been defaulted from a tournament.

this kid could be the future world # 1 and he might be banned fromfutures and challengers!! this should not happen he needs to make his own descions on whether he plays or walks off the court NOT his fathers

A life ban would be pretty stupid. Last year Tursunov walked off the court in Nottingham during a doubles match and was subsequently defaulted from the tournament after arguing with the chair umpire. Where's his ban?

Can't see it happening. Besides, Australia has no other prospects with promise so TA would be very unwise to play politics here.

That was an ATP event, it's not governed by the ITF.

I doubt the ITF will give Tomic a lifetime ban. He was just a kid caught in the middle and it could not have been easy for him with his father screaming at him. Ban the father.

They are probably not happy with his attitude more than anything. Anyone can walk off the match by simple "luck of energy" and couldn't go on. No doctor in the world can prove that otherwise.

Tomic needs to get away from his Father. He needs to part ways with him (as far as tennis is concerned) as quickly as possible. If not, it's not going to turn out well for Tomic. And he deserves a better shot than that. He's got a lot of talent.

How about a long way outside the jurisdiction of tennis australia. Would that suffice? ;)

If i was Tomic, i would sue the circuit for what he would make in his life in prize money. i say about $25 million dollars would be a fair amount..

I can't believe that tennis AU would take that stance. Can't believe it.

It is the works of the dude's father. How can you hold that against him?

That would be the most unfair judgement ever if he got banned for life because of his father and him just doing what he knows....abiding by the authority of his father.

He should be punished because he did break the rules and needs to be cut from the embilical chord, but still not to that severity.

He always could come and claim some other country and hope for wildcards if he does get banned.

Once again in professional sport we may see a punishment that does not fit the crime.

Tomic should be heavily fined, or a levy on his prize money maybe, but there are a lot of pros out there whose petulance defies their age. I can think of active slam winners on tour who can easily act like teenagers.
