Safin got off lightly in Moscow fight, says sister
Last updated 15:40 12/01/2009

Dinara Safina, Marat Safin's highly ranked sister, has suggested her brother was fortunate not to have suffered far worse than the black eyes he has been sporting following a fight in Moscow.

Safina, the world No. 3 last year, said Marat might have fared "much worse" given the prevalence of guns in "crazy" Moscow, where Safin received cuts and bruises under both eyes after a fight that he declared he had won.

The injuries were visible when he showed up at the Hopman Cup in Perth last week and requested medical attention.

Asked whether she had been concerned about her brother's welfare, Safina, who is playing in Sydney this week, said yesterday: "I didn't know that it happened. When I saw him, I was like, 'What happened to you?' Because nobody told me.

"On the other hand, in Moscow, it could be much worse, you know. Sometimes it's crazy in Moscow because some of the guys, they can have a gun.

"He has a scar on his face but at least - if somebody with a [gun] - you know, it could always be worse."

Safina, who played mixed doubles with her brother in the Hopman Cup, said she did not have any details of what had happened to him.

"He said straight away, 'It was not my fault.'

"He had some fight with a guy but if he doesn't want to say, I'm not going to push him. One day will come, maybe he will tell me everything."

Safina said it was "nice" to play with her brother, but also difficult because both of them liked to be the "dominant person on the court". She said she had not let him boss her around.

"I won the fight, I'm good, I'm OK," said the former world No1. "I got in trouble in Moscow but it's OK, I can survive. It's just a small problem. I wasn't in the right place at the right time," he added, without elaborating.

People as someone who owned a company that made filters for certain companies, I implore you to not smoke. All I can say, its much worse than you can imagine. And if you absolutely have to smoke, tear off the filter.

Fognini smokes. At RG, there was a lockerroom video where Novak took his cigarette and threw it in the trash. lol

Ferrer smokes? I am so sorry I didn't see this thread earlier. Now I'll have to add another saint to the pantheon of smokin' sportsmen and light a couple of candles to him every Saturday. Oh, and a couple of Dunhills, too.

PS
The last idiot who thought he was clever pulling my cigarette from my mouth still has the cigarette burn scar in his palm to remind him of his stupidity.
