Tennis stars can practise in quarantine ahead of Open, ATP says

A significant threat to the quality of international names competing at the Australian Open is closer to being avoided, after the ATP told players they would be able to practise during 14-day quarantine.
With the first grand slam of the year most likely to begin a couple weeks late on February 1, players will be able to arrive in Australia at the end of the first week of 2021 and train while separated from the community, according to communication sent from the ATP to players.

Meanwhile Millman doing 14 days without a window that opens or a time allotment to go outside for some air!

Incredibly hard to organise but well done to those involved for doing the best they can to ensure the tournament does go ahead but still keep our population safe.

The best part of attending a live tennis tournament is getting close to players on those practice courts during the week prior the opening day. That won't happen now. Is a shame but understandably so. Good luck Melbourne!

What these jokers think will happen if John Millman opens his window. He will infect half a city just by breathing from his window!? :-D
Paranoia "level maximum".

It's a window that doesn't open judging by Millman's tweet and not that they are banned from opening windows in quarantine.

We don't have any legal 'human rights' in Australia, only common law, and what sneaks in through international law.

It's a burden that we don't have to bear.

14 days without fresh air!? Australia redefining the term human rights, as we speak!? :-D

Oh they are allowed to practice? What a treat!!

I get it Australia you’re the good guys of the covid 19 year of 2020 but you may as well have not even bothered holding the Australian Open if you weren’t going to “let” the players train beforehand.

Anyway I am glad they are at least holding the tournament. The important thing for people’s sanity is that life goes on as normal as possible. There is a mental health crisis starting and I I think that is just as important to consider. Let life go on and protect the elderly and most vulnerable (aka like 95% of the deaths).

Just my opinion. Don’t hate!!

There’s a lot of people here who would rather not have the tournament and not risk the chance of Covid running through our community after most states have eliminated it. We don’t want to willingly choose to allow thousands of people to die like the majority of the world. We look at the rest of the world with sadness seeing hospitals flooded and thousands dying. We are back to mostly normal with cafes and theatres open, having events with 50,000 people and not fearing community transmission. We can just about travel to each state and have domestic holidays, tourism companies are beginning to be booked solid for Christmas period. We’re doing great cause of what we did.

:)

Oh and this isn’t hate, i know that it’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. I’m just posting facts.

"Here’s a question for my fellow ‘quarantine-ers’ ... What has been the toughest thing in your quarantine experience? For me it’s the 14 days without a window that opens or a time allotment to go outside for some air! Day 11 of 14. Nearly there

What sort of quarantine has Millman been subjected to??? Fresh air is an essential part of making sure you don't catch the virus! I would not tolerate or allow anybody trying to quarantine me without access to fresh air!!!

Australia (and even more so, New Zealand) have handled the pandemic well, for sure.

However I will state that it's a bit easier to achieve this when you are island nations at the end of the earth. Not so easy for some other countries to seal themselves off.

Yes, there's tens of thousands of Australians stranded overseas because there are not enough rooms to quarantine them in on arrival.

Most sites are however fancy but empty hotels so Millman is staying in good digs but the place is fully air conditioned and he wouldn't be allowed out for a walk.

Air conditioning is not the same as fresh air (in fact its much more conducive to the spreading of virusses) and why the heck can't Millman go out for a walk providing he doesn't meet up with anybody? I'm amazed he and any other Aussies could agree to put up with such nonsense!

The ratio of administrators to the quarantined probably doesn't allow for a personalised experience of social isolation. It's a very expensive business, after all!

At one stage they were trying to do quarantine on the cheap, and a catastrophe ensued.

The right to breathe fresh air is a fundamental human right and doesn't cost anybody anything.

The same that ever person entering Aus is subjected to.

We are not allowed to leave the country either, unless for work/moving/heading back to home OS.

The more I read about it, the more absurd it gets to hold a tournament in a country that is following a very strict isolation. Wouldn’t it be better to cancel or postpone the AO? I don’t see the point to be honest.

They could actually organize warm-up events within the quarantine location.
The players could organize it, and you don't even need umpires or linespeople.
The players can do the officiating, just as they do in club tennis.

The two week isolation is the medically recommended period, so it should happen everywhere.

It’s up to the local authorities to determine what are the precautions needed. I feel that for sporting events, keeping the players in a bubble is sufficient. However, if you want the players to stay over and go out dining and shopping, then the 14 days quarantine is understandable.

My understanding is that scientific research is behind the 14 days recommendation, not arbitrary political decision-making.

I love how human rights seem to fall like rain drops on the rich and poor alike.

Rich, poor or just about making ends meet.....all have the right to breathe fresh air. If they haven't then something far worse even than Orwell's dystopian '1984' has somehow snuck amongst us almost unawares.
