After reading through the three (or so) years of info on the advantages and disadvantages of the low end dropweights, namely the Alpha String Pal, the Gamma X-2, and the Klippermate, I have decided to go with the Alpha. The clamps are superior to both the X-2 and the Klippermate (although the last may only be marginally), the racheting system is as good as that on a X-2, and the customer service from Alpha is impeccable.

I will be ordering the stringer either tomorrow (if Alpha is open) by phone, as that way seems to be most recommended. I will also order a bucket of the Excel II og's a reel of their hardcourt synthetic gut, 5 sets of their nylon to practice on, and 4 sets of the Gut Poly 2000. That total is $200, and those strings should last me about half a year.

Since I am a completely novice stringer, with no experience whatsoever, I think it'll be interesting to see how well I can get used to stringing. I'll keep everyone updated with how everything goes.

Congratulations. Let us know how you like it and stringing when you get it.

Wow 3 years! Talk about slow and deliberate:).

Once you start stringing for yourself, you will wonder why you waited so long.

On the lowend dropweight stringers, the differences are rather minor IMO. After you string about half a dozen times, you will quickly see the limitations of DW with floating clamps. I did but I haven't upgraded yet because I don't string enough to warrant an upgrade.

I just ordered my machine tonight. I was having some questions regarding shipping so I called Alpha.

They got back to me tonight. Greg (the guy who I was speaking with) was super nice. My question was about shipping regarding the other stuff I was ordering along with the machine. Normaly, shipping would cost about 10 bucks, but he just waived that for me. I immediately ordered the stuff. That guy was a real pleasure to deal with. I will DEFINATELY deal with alpha in the future.

I don't have an Alpha but if I didn't have my ML100 I'd go with something from Alpha. They seem to offer good value and good customer service. Congrats on your purchase.
