The "31 May" line in the sand...

It's been exactly a month since the USTA National office put out the 31 May suspension. Has anyone heard from any "officials", whether it be local, state or Sectional, if they (USTA National) plans to
(a) keep the 31 May date,
(b) slide it to the right any,
(c) keep the 31 May date AND communicate with local/State/Sectional officials that play can resume,
(d) or for some reason remove the suspension before 31 May??

For (a) I ask because if they keep the date and then all of a sudden the 31st arrives and no word at all from Local and State about play resuming, then what?? Of course the best approach is if (c) is ongoing now then league can resume the first week of June or so once facilities are confirmed they are open and schedules are set in Tennis Link.

Who knows, they may come out with some info very soon being the previous communications were 10 days apart then 3 weeks later (13 Mar -> 23 March -> 13 Apr). I've looked and there are several Sections that have announced their plans to not have State and Sectionals or some have said they will have State (districts), but we are still waiting from our Local/State and Section for the final word. There is an indication that States will happen and a possibility of Sectionals in the Fall.

My local USTA leagues are resuming matches beginning matches in the first week of June. Our section has indicated that regionals and sectionals would still be happening although no nationals.

But this is only one of the local leagues in my area. The other local league counties are still in shutdown and no indication of when local leagues will begin.

I got an email from our sectional coordinator that there will be a formal announcement on league play on Monday.

Locally, our leagues are scheduled to start up on June 6 and go through mid-August ... The schedules are supposed to come out next week .... we shall see.

A lot of teams have scratched (with refunds) and many players have chosen not to play as well. Although mostly because of the heat of LV in the summer not due to virus concerns.

Most of my team is now practicing again even though court access is spotty. We're ready to play. I see guys out there from other teams, too.

I'd like to see the spring over 18 league go ahead this summer. I think the sticking point will be if the State (CA) refuses to allow the clubs to open.

It sounds like teams playing out of open public parks might be set to go. But private clubs will likely open far later, if at all.
Does not seem workable for USTA league play. Unless a league is re-aligned to consist exclusively of open public park teams...
But L.A. is going to continue partial shut down till ~July? Don't know where tennis fits in. Some counties are currently allowing rec-play with families only but not any league play.
If possible, might be best if the Governor provides uniform guidance for public courts in the entire state (but assuming Governor is not doing so because some counties are safer than others).

Right now, San Francisco public courts are locked. But public courts a few miles away in Contra Costa county are open.

In San Diego County, even the public park scene is a mess. Some of the courts I was using in April are now locked up, while others have opened back up. There's no reason to not open up the clubs beyond maintaining the pretense that people are still locked in their homes.

Whoever is in charge in LA has made some crazy claims, such as not ending the lockdown until there's a cure. Absolutely bonkers.

No one is going to follow the "family only" rule so it nonsense to even propose it.

At this point, I'm against uniform guidance from the state, as there's a chance it will be stricter than rules the counties and cities attempt to enforce.

If clubs are in the same category as gyms, Governor says they are months away.

Stage 3: High-Risk Workplaces
This stage involves opening higher risk environments with adaptations and limits on the size of gatherings.
These include hair and nail salons, gyms, movie theaters, sports without live audiences, and in-person religious services.

Yes. I guess they could open the tennis clubs and leave the gyms closed. In any case, the Governor has set completely insane standards.

Despite that paltry number of patients in the hospitals here, California has decided that we can't reopen even if other states across the country are already successfully reopening.

I wonder if we can organize enough people to recall him?

Oregon USTA has canceled all leagues until the fall . They might do some type of summer season that won’t count towards ratings.

That does not bode well for California USTA given that Oregon has only 32 deaths per million. California has 77 deaths per million.

WV just announced that they are allowing opening INDOOR GYMS effective Monday..... Yet our outdoor public courts remain padlocked and patrolled by cops....
We currently have fewer than 500 active cases in the entire state. The vast majority of those are more than 100 miles away from my home county, which remains padlocked.

The way I read it, while the lockdown continues, certain things are being re-opened for exercise: golf courses, tennis courts, and beaches.

Here in Ohio my club opens on the 26th. Public court in my county are all shut down but the more populous county to the south of me are still open... here is what USTA ******* says...

The following events have been cancelled for 2020:
  • USTA/******* Section Junior Team Tennis Championships
  • USTA/******* Section and State Adult League Championships (Adult 18&O, 40&O and 55&O, 65&O Invitational, Tri-Level Invitational, Mixed 18&O and 40&O)
  • USTA/******* Section District Qualifiers
We were in the middle of our 18+ season. So I guess its a possibility to finish the local league and maybe districts... but what's the point if there is no State after that or Sectionals after that?!

Calif is going to be mainly Phase 1 of Stage 2 on Mon 5/18/20. SF is a no-go for public courts. [Private courts are ??] No mention of tennis because most public courts are at playgrounds, which will remain closed. Kids are too dumb to practice physical distancing, so parents are even dumber to not enforce it. Calif does not think adults are very bright and they do have experience with a lot of stupid adults. OTOH, this penalizes adults that are smart. :happydevil:

Anybody in Florida with an update? And Mid Atlantic??

Not sure about USTA. Most public courts remained open but the pro shops were closed at the larger tennis facilities. A few tennis facilities that shut down are now starting to open again. My club looks like it will be last to open unfortunately.

Gyms can open Monday. Salons opened last Monday. We should be in full Phase I on Monday. The Governor is considering letting theme parks open if they submit a written safety plan that he approves. People seem scared to go out though.

Did the local coordinator already come out with a schedule for both indoors and outdoors locations ?

My county in the past 3 months has had 6 deaths, and we don’t know if that’s due solely to the Corona or otherwise. But out of the couple hundred thousand, The reaction seems a little overblown.

doubles too?

Interestingly, the current USTA and ITA positions recommend against playing doubles. Their concern is the possible inability to consistently maintain the 6 feet of separation advocated by the CDC. It is a bit of a stretch for them to drop this recommendation so that league doubles can begin while the virus is still highly active. Of course, this is just a recommendation, not a prohibition.

...the governor’s standards may not be ‘insane’ depending on his (their) goals. Clearly, and with new evidence such as the news today that the virus doesn’t seem to spread effectively on surfaces, ‘flattening the curve’ is no longer the goal.

I should clarify, that ‘news flash’ is courtesy of the CDC. That’s the same CDC that botched/delayed the testing kickoff through good old bureaucracy and the very same organization that said masks are not needed nor recommended, err, are recommended, err, wear if you want to, ummm....

It's negative news all around, but did anyone expect them to have these championships and if they did would even 50% of the participants play?

And the lingering question, which schmke covered pretty well in a response, is what will they do about ratings for the folks that have only played 3 maybe four matches and may or may not finish their local season. There's no "benchmark" to figure into the equation but as schmke suggested they could just take the dynamic rating.
