The black socks trend

Who's wearing them out there? I like them with my CB 3.3 black/white/yellows -not exactly like what Rafa's wearing, but close. But can look a little strange on all white shoes. What do you guys think?

I do agree that black socks can look strange with white shoes, but I think black socks are cool in general. Keep wearing them!

Perhaps I'm just old school, but I don't like the look. It is a trend at the moment. I played yesterday and there were a bunch of young guys wearing black socks. Some of them weren't even wearing black shoes.

I only wear black socks when I wear predominantly black shoes. Black socks with any other color shoes just doesn't work for me... LOL

I only wear black socks since I got my GR3 (Black/Yellow). Now that I'm wearing GR4 (Black /Green) the tradition continues. Cheers!

Did you chase them off your lawn?

I'm relatively young and I love black socks! Once your shoes get dirty then it's like wearing black shoes with white socks which I hope no one does.

No but I told them that tennis used to be a gentlemen's sport and now they let any ruffian play it. Then I hobbled over using my racket as a cane and shook my fist at them with displeasure. I can assure you that those hooligans will think twice about playing tennis in black socks in the future.

Atta boy. That'll teach those ne'er-do-wells. Back to the skate park for you, you punks!!!

I would expand this and say that I'd only wear black socks with dark shoes and with black shorts, so the lower half of me matches. I still remember Agassi back in '94; he wore black socks with Nike shoes that were white all the way around the bottom and black on top. From a distance, with the black on the tops of the shoes blending into the socks and the white lower part of the shoes, he looked like he was wearing white pumps. :) Maybe someone can find a photo of that combination...

I usually wear white for tennis but have a few pairs in black that I will mix in on random occasions.

I never wear white socks unless playing sports though.

I wear black socks whenever. I just reach in my drawer and grab a random pair. Lol but for these specific pair of Nikes that show that elevate my heel and show the gray heel part of the socks. (hopefully you can picture it?) I have to wear black socks otherwise I look weird with the heel being shown.

I took 10 years off and came back to it last year and saw the younger, better players (5.0+) wearing them.
With a black/yellow combo they look pretty great, but I have a pair where white is the predominant color and they look a little off.

Thought its funny, the really good players at my club wear the cheapest shorts and cotton t-shirts, its the older 3.5 types who rock the latest gear more. But heck, I like to look good.

OK, for those haters of black socks...exactly what would you recommend I wear w/ these this summer?

My opinion only:

If you're sporting black socks, the shoe should have some black in it, too. If it's all black or even mostly black, you'd better be wearing black socks (think Stan Wawrinka and his white sock/black shoe faux pas). Black shorts help complete the look, but if there's enough black in the shoe, any color would be okay. Black attire will slim whatever body part it's on. Slim ankles look much nicer than fat ones. Long live the black socks!

Black socks are sick. I wear them with whatever, whenever. Even with just normal shoes to school. I'm 15, and it seems to be the in thing right now.

Agree, black socks are sick. I LOVE black socks with black shoes, looks so dang cool imo. I think black socks even with light shoes is ok, (shoes should have some black for sure,) but white socks with black shoes I really don't like.

Right now I'm sporting white socks with my green/yellow CB 3.3's but sometimes I use black with the green/yellow and it doesn't look so good haha

My only issue with black socks arises off the tennis court.

I'm seeing a lot of d00shbag Justin-Bieber-hairstyle-wearing 14-20 year-old bros wearing black Nike crew socks and either brown Sperry deck shoes or a Nike Air Max model. This is an epidemic. Even more bothersome than the flat-brim hat craze.

I'd wear my socks - any color would do - OVER these hideous things, personally. ;)

I'll admit they are a bit 'loud', but they are possibly the best clay court shoes I've worn. Plus, I picked them up for $55. Not bad for a pair of shoes that retail for $109.

Black socks look good with black shoes. With white shoes, not so much.

I have almost always worn black socks because I thought white socks were for geeks. Have been wrong all along? :)

Seriously, black socks look great with my bl/wh/sil Prince T-10s.

You need some freedom bro! Too many rules and restrictions. Just wear whatever color combo, be an artist, not a conformist!

I just started wearing blue socks and I don't give a damn!

Right, when you are wearing those shoes, the socks are not your biggest concern ;-). I saw these shoes were recommended (and they probably are great), but then when I looked at the shoes, I was like never mind. Someone described it as they would go well with an astronaut suit, due to the silver bands in there.
Maybe it's just about whether you can pull it off (cue Gillette ad with Fed/Woods/Jeter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R1Ds3PvFcY).

I only wear one type of sock, all the time. These ones (black/charcoal, not the sand colour). I bought three pairs on sale some years ago in Australia, wore them the next day, and the day after went back and bought ~20 pairs. I still have most of them but some are starting to get holes. (Can't wait for the day I buy 20 fresh pairs*)

Anyway, I wear these black socks all the time. They are low cut so I guess you can't see them so much with regular sneakers. They are the best sock I've ever worn. I wear two pairs for tennis training and matches.

*If I was a bazillionaire, I'd put on a brand new pair of socks and undies every day :)

Speaking of black socks...

Haas was wearing these w/ black socks yesterday:

which isn't all that bad, except he was wearing white shorts and this shirt:

While I'm no fashion guru, I do think you need to match a little. That combo was just hideous.

I went to hit on Tuesday and the high school match was still in progress. With this topic in mind I checked out what sock/shoe combo was happening with all the "new school" players.

One school's colors are white/red, the other red/white/black.

Without exception every player with white shoes wore black socks. Every player with black shoes wore white socks. In addition, they all wore ankle length, no crews.

Each team has about a dozen players, is this a large enough sample size?

And the match hinged on the number 3 doubles outcome. All the other team members lined up along the fence in the adjacent court to cheer them on. It was pretty cool. The home team squeaked out a narrow victory in the third set.

BTW I was wearing white ankle length socks with my black/red/white Nikes.

Wonder who officially started the black sock trend, was it Fab Five at Michigan or Agassi, or some other. Gotta know, please help.

I started wearing black socks when I got black barricades. Recently, I have been wearing black socks (no-shows) with my white/black barricade 6s. The inside/top of the shoe is black, so I wear black socks. I think it looks good!

Today I tried on a pair of KSwiss Tubes Monfils Mid Black/Blues while wearing white socks. The white socks didn't look good with those shoes. I think if I bought them I'd have to wear black socks, although if they were available, silver socks would really look good with them. But for my nearly all-white Prince Viper VI mids, white socks are the way to go.

It was Iron Mike Tyson.... At least in a one on one sport...black is the new black...especially for us the clay court players...
