"fast", "not too much clay", just like tennismusic observed.

But it looked like they put some clay on it for the nadal match maybe, didn't look as thin as in the highlights.

t&m is absolutely right. he knows best. he works with the nobel prize winners and the dalai lama, bono vox, calvin & hobbes and the whole lady smith black mambazo choir...

t&m rocks (and squeaks)

Woe is me. The lamentations of a man alone in his fight to bring a type of honest justice to the world of Talk Tennis. Armed with a video, this man seeks to educate his fellow posters, to plant the ever growing seed of truth in their brains...nay, in their hearts; for in the fertile soil of one's heart truth can take root more deeply than in the capricious mind and, dare I say, instill in a human being the burning desire to do right...to do right when one sees the maliciousness of untruth rear its ugly head. Can our hero steel himself? Can he beat back the hydra-headed phantom of untruth with the knowledge of what is right? Can one man, one daring man with the ever-present danger of tainting his own, purest of souls with the intellectual dishonesty of his fellow forum-goers, turn away from his fears and fight the good fight for the good of mankind?

Yes. The answer is yes. Unequivocally...undoubtedly...yes. With one video of one match, he has proven that there exists a malicious intent in the hearts of the French: the intent to handicap the King of Clay, the Toro de Toros, Rafael Nadal. What loathsome, dishonest tripe is this? Whence came this treachery? Whence came this skulduggery? Do not tell our hero it emanates from the Earth. Do not tell our hero it changes with the so-called temperature or conditions. Fool. You fool. He knows this is a malicious plot on the part of Untruth, that rabid denier of honesty and virtue. Our hero begs you to look deeply into his own eyes, to avert yours from the crusted, red-eyed stare of Untruth, and to take from him what he took from El Gran Matador: a sense of calmness and truth, which ultimately emanates from the very fabric of his own pure heart, where truth, the kind from which radiates an honest, pure light, took root originally, and find its home indefinitely.

Look to our hero, but do not tell him the squeaks are not indicators of dishonesty, for he will smash your deceit-bearing face with his intellectual hammer, which was forged long ago with tempered Truth and fired Knowledge. He has worked with PhDs blast you! Heed his words. Why can you people not see what lies before you in plain sight? The squeaks are all that he needs to prove his point, nothing more, nothing less.

wow ! what a post !!!!! :)

French players like Tsonga favor fast courts so courts have been sped up to play like fast courts.Weather sped them up even more.

Taylor Dent:

The 29-year-old Dent never before had won a French Open match and remarked with a wide smile: "Better late than never, right?"

He pointed out that the hot and dry weather has transformed the clay, making the surface "really quick. It's almost like a hard court out there."

"If it's fast, it's ideal for the Americans, more so than any other type of players out here," Dent said. "We always have that label, like, 'Oh, you're American. First round. See you later.' So I think we get a lot of pride from winning matches here."

Roddick struggling in R1 with an opponent he should beat comfortably in straights and Dent being demolished by Soder after trying to S&V on clay. The clay might have sped up, but Roddick is still not making it past first week.

The rain and cloudy conditions have slowed things down today.

40 aces in his match today!

RG ceased being a clay court in 2009.

surface changed to hard court(with dirt on top)

dasco also said in his presser "very fast...not much clay."

fed also played his first two rounds like a hard court.

nadal better hope for more poor weather. then his chances will increase

me thinks fed's biggest obstacle to making final is andy murray. he plays on hard very well at his best. the speed is pretty much in andy's bracket.

They should move the slam to Monte-Carlo, that's what a claycourt should be like. RG is becoming a parody of it.

even if you are a federer fan, i´m sure you will agree on this statement i found somewhere: "The courts playing like they are IMO completely take away the character of what makes clay court tennis, clay court tennis. It's basically like a hard court on clay now. I see enough hard court tennis throughout the year, and now since most clay court tournaments play pretty quick now, there is little variety with the courts, they all play pretty similar, all year around. Not impressive."

For me, the most interesting feature about tennis courts is the sliding. And the interesting drop-shots it can inspire in some players.

I don't care about 50-stroke rallies. /snore.

Hey do you actually watch the matches or do you just come here to spout off crap like this and make worthless threads?

Federer playing like it's hard court? You really think he'd use as many drop shots as he's used if this was hard court? Murray also played a lot of droppers as well. Rallies today were regularly going 20+ shots w/ the heavy conditions. Do yourself and everyone else who has to read your crap posts a favor and actually think a bit and watch matches before you come spouting off this junk day after day.

When's the last time Roddick got broken 6 times in a hardcourt match? Look it up, I'm sure it'll be hard to find. Stop it w/ this ridiculous "RG=HC" bull-s you guys are posting time and time again. That goes for all of you btw, not just Halba.

alright, i guess that´s a matter of taste. Anyway, i don´t think the tv ratings support your theory. People love watching federer, nadal and djoko. The majority of tennis fans go to youtube and watch federer-hewitt rally, verdasco-nadal rally or federer-nadal 08 WB final, you will agree, right? Nobody gives a damn about karlovic or isner. That´s more like olympic shooting, not enjoyble tennis. Maybe for you it is, but not for the average tennis fan i know

In every era of tennis, people have liked the players who are the best. In this era, the courts favor more baseline play. The best players have to be superb from the baseline.

To say hat people love watching Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic does not in any way mean that people want to see so much baseline rallying, and aren't interested in more variety.

Given that they made drastic changes to both Wimbledon and USO it's only fair that they do the same to FO.

I'd be more happy if they returned both of those surfaces to faster speeds.

But if they're not gonna do that, I agree, speed up Wimbledon.

Claycourt specialists complained and moaned until Wimbledon was slowed down. Time to pay them back for the favor.

Not having confidence in Rafa winning it this year?

If he’s really that good, then he should be able to adapt to the change and win. That’s the mark of a champion. If he can’t, then he’s simply incapable or limited in his ability. Look at SW19, they change the condition and Roger was able to cope with it and win.

I hate to feed the madness, but Bill Macatee is doing some powwow with Bob Brett and Roger Rasheed and began the segment asking about the speed of the courts. Brett agreed they're faster than in the past and said the ball is a superball. So, these talking heads think things are quick out there.

French hate the King of Clay. They deliberately sped up the courts to give all-serve mugs and ball bashers a chance. Doesn't matter though, Rafa is winning French this year no problem.

This is just so that if Nadal loses at any time, there's another excuse (other than knees) right?

Ok, no worries vernoique, I gotcha.

This was a general statement, not pertaining to Rafa. Rafa can win on any surface and he has many times.
I like slow surfaces because they neutralize the serve and big serves bore me. Up to now, clay was a refuge where big serves didn't rule. I am not looking forward to it becoming another opportunity for ace fests. We have enough of that on all other surfaces already.

Q. I can go back and look at the transcript when you talked about Lenglen before. Can you briefly sort of summarize why you don't like that court as much as otherwise?
ANDY RODDICK: Well, it's known as the slowest one. It's a fun court as far as people viewing, and I have to issue with it. It's just the way that it plays isn't really doesn't really help me out much. That's all. That's fine.
There's courts like that everywhere. You have to deal with it and you have to play through it. Everything that I'm telling you guys, everybody deals with out there. It's nothing just for me. It's just my personal preference is all.

(Roddick is 0-5 career on Lenglen. BTW so much for the fast courts, courts today played as slow as ever)

Oh please spare us. This mud is slow and boring enough at times. Go watch a tape of the Courier-Agassi final they made the court play faster than carpet.

It depends on the player,JBF#1 and on the conditions. After his first round match Dasco, who also practiced a bit on PC,said that he felt Lenglen had less clay. The outside courts are the fastest from what I've heard.

Yet when I and others tried telling you guys how the courts were playing faster due to heat and would slow down once rain came in, you guys kept going with your conspiracies about less clay, more hardcourt, FFT trying to take out Nadal, etc. Now it's rained and - what do you know, the courts are playing slower all throughout. Must be magic.

Doubt it. The Swiss mafia probably got into some arguments with the Frenchies, so Fed's not gonna have any "luck" from now on at RG...

Our good pal Cyan apparently still thinks courts are HC...

This whole pre-emptive excuse making for Nadal has got to stop at some point.
