The Doubles Thread

Love Game

Talk Tennis Guru
I've been wanting to start a doubles thread for some time, and this is the first opportunity that's presented itself. Because of somewhat limited coverage of doubles matches, this thread is for all tournaments, both men and women. There's been a bit of a renewed interest in doubles due to the new dubs rules, such that more singles specialists are participating than in previous years, sometimes giving the dubs specialists a run for their money.

_______________

Speaking of men's doubles, there are some interesting matchups in the works this week. The first that comes to mind is in the Serbia Open, in their No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. The No. 1 seeds are Nestor/Zimonjic, and the No. 2 seeds are Kubot/Marach. While Nestor/Zimonjic are the "team to beat in 2009, having snapped Bob and Mike Bryan's three-year hold on the top spot in a dramatic winner-take-all Tennis Masters Cup final," Kubot/Marach in turn dismissed the top seeds from the Australian Open in early rounds.

Nice thread LG! I've always liked doubles, but it seems the only doubles I can watch are at the Slams and when I go to live events. More TV coverage would be appreciated.

Anyways, I'm rooting for Zimonjic and Nestor to win their fourth title in as many weeks. By the way I met Zimonjic at Indian Wells and he's like the nicest guy ever.

glad i'm not the only one, norbac  Dont really understand the scarcity of televised doubles matches at all, especially since the majority of club players do doubles.

Anyways, I'm rooting for Zimonjic and Nestor to win their fourth title in as many weeks. By the way I met Zimonjic at Indian Wells and he's like the nicest guy ever.

okay, good. i'll take kubot/marach! :D

p.s. bit of a surprise that BRY/BRY lost in their first round in Munich! :(

Completely agreed on the club player/dubs TV point, really doesn't make sense why we don't see much dubs on TV.

Shocking defeat for the Bryans, hopefully they bounce back next week.

Thats interesting about Zimonjic. He looks so rough and intimidating that you don't think of him as being anything but cold.

Thanks, LG. Good to have a specific place where guys like me, who like doubles, can post. Actually, I was more of a singles player, never liked to play doubles, and thats why I particularly like the fantastic activity of the pro doubles teams. I just wish there was more/any coverage of these events. When I'm at a tournament, I always spend a fair amount watching doubles.

^^^ Hey LT :) ... I've started noticing that those singles players who also play doubles seem to have slightly faster reflexes during some of those rapid exchanges at the net. somewhat rare, but exciting when it does happen :D

No kidding. You realize that Nadal is a terrific doubles player. He has 5 doubles titles. Yes, 5 and an overall record of 75-48. Federer was a terrific doubles player, ranked in the 20s at one time. But then when he hit #1, he stopped playing doubles. You notice that Djokovic gets into doubles now and then? Anyway, I don't think doubles play is dead.

Do you guys know about how much Top 20 doubles players make ? Do they make enough to be Millionares ? I know at the challenger level, doubles guys don't make enough to pay for their hotel bill.....

Next week I belive they go to Madrid for their new Masters 1000 event.

And yeah, new Richie ava, I think I needed a change...to more Richie of course.

Yeah, he was very nice. Took his time and geniuenly seemed to care about his fans and tennis.

Bryans make about 800,000 a year (each). Knowles made 400,000 last year. Nestor 840,000 (a good year for him). Dlouhy and Cuevas, very young players, both made 400,000. Damm only made 160,000 last year although he used to make 300 - 400. Bjorkman/Mirnyi used to clear a million when they were playing together. Others drop off pretty fast from that.

PS: I could be wrong about Cuevas. Just my memory and not record check

Heads up for Nestor/Zimonjic fans: Their match is 4th up on centre court, with 3 singles matches prior to it, beginning at noon, Thursday 7 May

D.Nestor (CAN)/N.Zimonjic (SRB) vs
M.Djokovic (SRB)/D.Madjarovski (SRB)

sooooo, if each of the singles matches takes at least 1 hour, then it would be no sooner than 3 pm belgrade time. Kalifornia time is 9 hours behind, which would be (estimating) no sooner than 6 a.m. (interested parties make your calculations accordingly plus check the stream from time to time)

unfortunately for us kubot/marach fans, their match w/b on show court 1, which isnt being shown by channelsurfing.net due to it's paralleling the atp, but i'm going to at least check to see if the stream from the serbia open website might (hope, hope, but probably not ) show it in addition to the match of their serbian heroes nestor and zimonjic.

of course, big upset everyone's talking about:
M.Djokovic (SRB)/D.Madjarovski (SRB) excusing the top seeds D.Nestor (CAN)/N.Zimonjic (SRB) 76(2) 26 10-6 ..... theyre scheduled to meet J.Brunstrom (SWE)/J-J.Rojer (AHO) in the last match of the day tomorrow (after big bro novak's match with troicki)

my choice, lucasz kubot, is gonna be a busy man tomorrow ... his singles match against vliegen is first up on centre court at noon .... but then, since he and his partner oliver marach beat the serbian team of troicki/tipsarevic 64 61 today, they w/b playing again at 5:00 pm (not quite as much time to rest as brother marko gets, but then ...), so i can only hope o.marach is properly rested for N.Ciric (SRB)/D.Savic (SRB) vs L.Kubot (POL)/ O,Marach (AUT)

Young Djokovic and his buddy Darko (like in horse) beat Nestor/Zimonjic?? Hmm. Was there unusually heavy betting on the underdog? Or did N/Z play with one racquet between them?

Everytime hes played doubles ive missed it! I want to see him play.

I saw him play doubles live at IW. He's got good touch and his opponents couldn't keep up with him when he was playing from the baseline. Have to say though, I saw Kiefer play doubles with Berdych against Hutchins and Andy Murray and that match was more exciting than Rafa's doubles match. Mainly because there was more net play, droppers and lobs.

Murray is a pretty good doubles player but Berdych and Kiefer are a team and doubles is team play. They are together for Madrid as well.

Djokovic is in doubles with Vemic and, get this, Del Potro with Fish. At doubles, Fish, ranked #17, is the best of the singles players. The next players of note are Robredo #39 and Verdasco #40, who are also entered in Madrid. Oh, I wish I could be there.

...and, get this, Del Potro with Fish. At doubles, Fish, ranked #17, is the best of the singles players...

Watched Juan Martin team with Nalbandian at Indian Wells earlier this year, against J. Murray and Aspelin. Both Jamie and Simon are pretty good doubles players and I fully expected them to have an easy win. To my surprise, Juan Martin and David won in straights. They're tough on a doubles court!

Then, in the second round, Del Potro and Nalbandian defeated Dlouhy and Paes, another two very good doubles players. They lost to Roddick and Fish in the quarters, who went on to win the tournament, (Andy and Mardy).

Thats interesting. But Jamie Murray is no Andy Murray and Roddick + Fish have had other success. I have never seen Fish in doubles. But then, got to go to tournaments for that. Maybe later this year.

The Bryans lost. DelP/Fish took out Fyrstenberg/Matkowski who are ranked 12 and 13! Wow. And Djokovic/Vemic advanced against a good doubles team. Lots of action. Of course we didn
't see any of it.

there are some great matchups remaining :)

i gotta root for delpotro/fish

and i wouldnt mind seeing parrott play (tho probably wont, even if his team wins champs )

would also like to see melo/sa play. one of them got seriously hit in the eye (dont remember which one) with the ball at delray beach, so good to see them doing well.

Gotta cheer for Delpo/Fish here. Mardy is doing very well in doubles this year. He already has a Masters shield from IW, wouldn't mind seeing him win one more here at Madrid.
