The Ernests' Earnest Journey Towards Elitism!

Happy that Ernie and this thread are back, but no joy in Mudville today. Good thing Djoky pulled it out, or I'd need a color appointment STAT.

I dunno...does Covington have a roller coaster?? Since her magnificent waterfront restaurant is sinking in the Ohio River, I'll have to go with Mason.

Yikes....up 5-2 in the first set and then went AWOL...squandered 5 set points...set point down before winning TB on Dodig double fault. Uggggh!

Breaks in first game of the second...Ernie complains about the crowd...point for 5-3....loses that game for four all...Ernie being a Crankenstein...down love-30 at 4-5...serves and pummels his way out of it...goes up 5-2 in TB...wins TB 7-4.

Fugly match, not elite at all, but he did power through when he needed to. And his hair was awesome.

It certainly was not a good match. The conditions (wind) certainly didnt help the level of play. Ernest also seemed to make it harder on himself by not wanting to finish points of at the net.

Another tournament, another loss to a nobody. Johnson could have made this a routine 6-4 6-1 win, but squandered a few MPs. Still took it in straights 6-4 6-4

I think it's safe to say Gulbis hasn't turned his career around, and probably never will.

Young guns been slacking...Dimitrov out, Gulbis out, Thiem out, Nishikori never in, Kyrgios never in.

Only one left is Raonic

That's what I like about Raonic. The Lopez loss notwithstanding, you have to give him credit for generally beating the guys he should and not suffering too many bad losses. Unfortunately, unlike some of the other young guys, he hasn't figured out how to crack the top players when he gets the chance. I'll take the consistency over the odd GOAT effort against a top player, though.

Bummer. I keep hoping for him to perform consistently at his potential level, but he is indeed somewhat of a headcase.

Several of the "younger" guys and up-and-comers need to find some consistency.

I was at both his matches here in Cincy and he truly is a headcase! He lacks any kind of focus and almost is constantly looking for conflict whether it be with the chair umpire or a fan in the crowd. He engaged with a fan during crucial points against Steve Johnson last night, out of all the matches at the tournament Gulbis was the only one who seemed to let the crowd actually have a negative affect on him. He is very entertaining to watch though because hes such a wild card and provides plenty of drama. If there was a Mic'd up version of a tennis show you would totally want Gulbis on there, only downside you would have to bleep out about half the content.

What load of crap. He's #12 in the world at this moment. He was outside the top 100 1.5 years ago. You don't call that a turn around? According to you everyone who is not number 1 or winning slams is performing poorly?

Anyway, Gulbis was terrible this summer until now. So I thought it was time to get my hopes up for the US open. He seems to have a great draw.

1: De Schepper
2: Thiem/ Lacko
3: Lopez
4th: Berdych
QF: Ferrer
SF: Federer
F: Djoko

If he is finally playing at his RG level again, he could make quite the run here. Thiem should be an entertaining match between the two team mates.

It is a great draw on paper but he has been flaking against much lower ranked players lately. So maybe it would have been better to draw some decent opposition early to ensure his focus?!

Potential 2R battle with the sparring partner. I was wondering how long it would take before they matched up early without Dominic earning seeding. This will be hard to be thoroughly happy after the match if it does happen.

I would've liked to see them draw a bit further in the tournament, but if they both make it to the 2nd round at least one of em will make it to the 3th round :?

My sentiments exactly. In Gulbisland, an "easy" draw is a hard one and vice-versa. He probably won't have the motivation/focus to get past the first 2 rounds now.

Ernests is looking good against DeSchepper. He is scheduled to play Thiem.... They share a coach and practice together.

Should be interesting.

I thought the trainer couldn't work on cramps.

I thought he pulled something. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt - and credit for not retiring.

You may receive treatment on changeovers only...maximum twice, IIRC.

I do applaud him for finishing but it was obvious which of the two puts in the dues off court. Any realistic hope for glory from Ernests will depend on how he reacts to today's loss. It's been a dud of a summer after he got us up @RG.

Good match and good win vs. Fognini. They were both playing well, lots of winners. Nice straight set win. Up next, the unpredictable lefty KliZAN!

considering his deep appreciation for her majesty, that must hurt... :-?
... but unfortunately so does the shoulder ! :(

will he withdraw from basel ?...
(i'd prefer him to play and secure an early denadalization in the QF, although a 1st round exit is preferable for the nadal and his appendix)

This sort of gender bending talk got the Russian bigwig a lengthy suspension. Ernie got off easy; will we???
