Rzr 98

I've been sidelined since January with a bad ankle ..... anticipating a return early next month .... spent the last few days stringing and customizing a RZR 98 to try on my return.

By adding blue sticky putty and lead to the handle I upped the strung weight to 11.7oz and balance to 6-8 points HL. The trap door Gamma incorporated makes this easy to do. Originally planned to replace the grip w/leather, but grip is so nice I couldn't bear to do it, just added a Yonex overgrip.

Strings are Ashaway Dynamite Soft 17 (m) @ 48 and
Babolat N.VY synthetic (c) @ 52

Stick feels great, hope it hits as well.

Betraying your Kneissl?

Just curious ..... the Gamma G325 was one of my all time favorites plus I really liked the 330X and I just wanted to see if I could capture some of that magic again.

It will be very hard for me to give up the Kneissl's , the RZR 98 would have to really be good for me to do that, but I'm still curious.

I really like the 98t as well. A bit too headlight to be a baseliner's stick though (at least the demo I had). And at 325 grams, there is not a whole lot of room for customization.

Sure will, but it will be a while before I'm actually able to hit with it. It is a shame that the Kneissl's are so hard (and costly) to obtain ..... not too many people are aware of what fine racquets they are.

Of course, I always thought the Gamma's flew way below the radar and their player sticks have been really good.

The flex and customization lee-way are the reasons I wanted to try the 98 (not the 98T) .... I'm no baseliner more of a flat hitting S&V player, love the net (if I can get there) .... always moving toward the net (of course, at my age , I don't move there very rapidly).......

Can't speak for all Gamma racquets, but the 340X does have pallets.

I didn't keep my 340X long enough to realize that ..... I much preferred the 330X and even the 320X over the 340X .... but none equaled the G325 .... if the 330X had a little more flex it definitely would have been a keeper.

RZR 98 tryout .......

While I've been laid-up for the last nine weeks I decided (based on the BLACK RACQUET REVIEWS) to order (w/o demo) a RZR 98. since I felt it was a little lighter than I like I weighted it (thanks to the "trap door") to 11.7 oz and approx 5-6 points HL. I had no qualms about buying and trying a Gamma racquet sight unseen as in all my years the Gamma G325 and 330X remain two of my favorites, tho for the past year I have been using nothing but Kneissl Black Stars. To make the comparison easy I strung it exactly like my Black Stars (maybe a lb or two tighter in order not to go too far below recs.)

1st outing Tues 3/27/12:

After nine (9) weeks without play, due to ankle injury and back problems I got the chance to try my new RZR 98 .... 1st impressions were, nice weight (mine is weighted to 11.7oz and 5-6 points HL) and excellent movement thru the air ... 1st thing i noticed was that the DAMPENER totally muted the play of the racquet - felt like a different stick w/o the dampener (and will stay that way) .... control and pace on serves is excellent (even after a nine week lay-off) .... the racquet is a pleasure to volley with.
My timing is too rusty to pass on ground strokes.

2nd outing Thurs 3/29/12

Definitely will never use a dampener on this racquet again ..... still serving and volleying well, and return of serve is no problem ....... the 98 is a very maneuverable at the net, potential here as a very good doubles racquet ..... still won't comment on ground strokes due to "rust" accumulation during lay-off ..... a cursory judgement here on the "feel" of the RZR 98 :
The 98 has a much firmer feel than I am used to in my Kneissl Black Stars .... TW measured the flex of the RZR 98 at 57, this compares to my Black Stars mfgr. rating of 64 .... to me the measurements feel reversed with the Black Star seemingly to feel more like 57 and the RZR 98 more like 64-65 ....... I guess this is another way of saying the Black Stars have more of an "old school" feel to them, while the RZR 98 has a more modern (read Babolat) feel to it. Both play quite nicely, and "feel" (soft vs firm) preference may well be the deciding factor between the two.

I just looked at the TW review of the RZR 98 and while the TW testers were impressed with its spin potential I , being a flat hitter, cannot comment there. But seeing their review does make me wonder if "rust" is the only factor impacting my ground strokes !

3rd outing Fri 3/30/12

I'm a little confused by the TW video review, since I find the racquet playing more like you saw in the video and less like the reviewers said !! IMHO the racquet serves very well... both flat and spin serves have good control, 'pop' and direction. Volleys too are a plus, crisp and controlled ...... return of serve is above average - blocked shots go where directed and angles are easily obtained ....... groundies give me problems, simply because I do not like stiff racquets and the 98 feels stiff to me ..... 1HBH angles are great, 2HBH power shots are jarring ...... FH takes good timeing and I'm very rusty right now (tho improving)

Maybe with a different string set-up the 98 would feel better ... I'll keep it and keep trying it, but right now will not replace my Kneissl Black Stars.

4th outing Mon 4/2/12

Its important to note that each of these outings have been brief due to my long lay-off. This outing merely confirms previous impressions as I'm still having some problems controlling my groundies especially the FH and the RZR98 does not have the "soft" feel that I have always preferred. ....... I think I'll experiment a little with the strings and see if that changes things.

**********

After my 5th trip to the courts I've decided to call this to a halt. First I think TW sorta put a bum rap on the RZR 98. It is not a soft cushy player's stick, but players that like the Babolat line - and that is a great many - could/would be more than pleased with this Gamma offering. I have three Kneissl Black Stars -( a totally different racquet from the RZR 98) - and I am not about to replace them. If I didn't have them already I definitely could have made a place for the 98 ..... current TW pricing has me thinking that the Gamma 330X can certainly be picked up at a bargain now, and the RZR series is also attractively priced and players who prefer a stiffer racquet and hit a lot of topspin would do well to give them both a personal demo.

Return home !!

Here I am after trying dozens of racquets ...... I currently have 2 Angell's and a Mantis listed in the "For Sale" section.

Those racquets collectively cost me well over $600.00 and I'm now playing with
3 Gamma T7's that cost me $70/ea. This "old school" racquet can still be found new tho it has been discontinued for years. The sweet flex of 57 can't be beat.

Sure hope you will let me back in the Gamma group.

note: added two 330X's to the bag and sold one of the T7's ...... still in the GAMMA camp and experimenting with strings and string set-up.

Hello everyone, just joined today.

I'm in the Gamma camp! I've been looking for Diamond Fiber M-5.5 Oversize replacements for years without any luck. Someone put an M-5.0 Oversize for sale on **** yesterday and I bought it... looks to be .75 inches longer but everything else looks relatively close, hopefully this is what I've been looking for.

Anyone else have experience with these? I play with a lot of topspin and for whatever reason I seem to be able to generate crazy amounts of spin with them.

Gt 330x

Hi, new to the Gamma Q

The Tour 330X is my first Gamma racquet.
Very solid stick that hits like a lite version of PSC 6.1 without the pain.
This seems to be a frame that I keep on coming back to time after time.
It is easy to hold serve with. Has great touch and is very easy to volley with.

A recent mod I did was add some strips of lead at 12 to give it a bit more power. It works my serve improved. Other frames I played with recently
were Dunlop AG200 and the POG both have there good points. The precision of the Dunlops make them fun to use but the lack of omph on the serve makes it difficult to win points. The classic POG is great for volleys and return of serves - but the large head size makes it difficult to serve with.

For me the 330X plays very well with classic strings Leoina 77 Prince SYN Gut duraflex 17G white strung 53lbs

The next strings I will try will be multi filliments like Technifibre 17 @ 55
Has anybody tried them with gut?

I've currently got 6 Gammas, 3-RZR 105's, 1 CP-900, 1-CP 900 team weighted up, 1-Diamond Fiber M6.5(crazy good racquet, but it's got a crack at 12 oclock). I've owned probably 3 more in the past, another M 6.5 and a os tradition 20 and a mid. I've played with a lot of racquets from Radicals, and Prestige, Blades, Pure Drives, Pure Storms, AeroPros, Dunlops, Prince, etc, etc and the gammas always seem to give me the best balance between control and power, I especially the new ones. I like rooting for the underdog too, so I hope Gamma keeps making great frames and more people pick them up! Also for the Pure Drive fans, if you see a CP 900 cheap somewhere, it is almost indistinguishable from the Pure Drive.

Do you have pretty sound technique on your serve? I find that I can get descent power on my flat first serve w/ the T-7. Maybe not /incredible/ power, but enough.

I really find that I hit a kick serve well with it. Really well! And I can slice and hit a "heavy" serve with it as well. I find it much more versatile on serve (at least with my mechanics, which I'm told are solid) than my Fischers.
Yo what is the gamma t7 grip shape like?

Don't mean to horn in here as Im sure sstchur will reply, but
IMHO, and based on my experience with the Fischer Mpro's, Mag Tour's, etc (the Pacific X Force sticks are basically Fischers) ...they all had a wonderful touch and feel, but were underpowered for the average player. The Gamma 320X, 330X, 340X and T-7 all had more 'pop' than the Fischers and almost as good control.
what shape were the t7 handles?

i played with my t-7 for the first time this week

i put put 16 gr of lead tape on it and it's awesome.

the best racquet ive ever hit with. I hve the feeling i can swing very hard and the ball always finds the court. Very good control.

im glad i bought two more new ones. These will be my sticks of choice

i string it with sp tornado 1.30mm at 63 lbs. It's perfect
What shape was the handle like? Wilson/head/prince?
