It was a very tough decision, but for me Zep won by a nose over the Beatles. Both bands released absolutely classic studio albums, but the Beatles faltered a few times toward the end, and their lack of enthusiasm was apparent. The White Album and Magical Mystery Tour have patches that are dreadful. Whereas Zep's albums, all of them, are vault-solid. But it could easily go either way.

Beatles = more hits, pop chart legends.
Zep = solid rock, best A to Z album catalog.

they are pretty good, but not greatest.

I know :)

They've been my favourite band since late 2003 so from my point of view they are the greatest.

Their music not only sounds amazing, but the songs actually mean something to people my age in England such as the London bombings, immigrants, casual sex, drugs, the way we dress, the British media etc..

I can't imagine them making it all that big in America as they won't be able to relate to the music in the same way. I'm not sure if they quite "get" what it's all about.

Bloc Party are kinda like the Police of this generation of post-postpunk UK acts. Their drummer is 100% muso; the frontman can be alternately inspiring and grating. Most of all, like the Police, they make music for the people without watering down their math-rock or their emo-politik sloganeering. And from what I understand, the most kick-ass live act since the Libertines. No small praise there.

That said, I think the IT band right now is the Arcade Fire, who may be the Talking Heads of this generation.

Band of the moment for me would be Japanese indie band Envy. Mix of post-rock, post-metal, and hardcore/screamo. Basically if you cross Mogwai with a little Isis with a lot of screaming into the abyss, you got Envy. Their formula is going to be the It sound in a few years.

It's funny, but I've noticed over the years that whatever music folks liked when they graduated from HS and the few years that follow, is the kind of music they prefer the rest of their lives. Not a rule, but a darned accurate guideline...

LMAO... whats with you and cordoba??

BTW, this is the guy: ugliest mtf in the world, even worse singer.

oh, yes. he is a belgrano´s supporter... ;)

worst singer you may say, i say unique voice, and great music. As for cordoba, i have friends there who send me music and they happen to support talleres, but at least la barra are talleres fans, no?

in all reality, the top three bands are the beatles, led zeppelin and the stones. other bands just dont have to talent or body of work to compare to these three. other bands may have one of two really great albums, but these three bands have atleast 4 classic albums

Yeah, an inherent problem with GOAT music debates is that music arguments are mostly built on precedent. It's inconcievable to imagine rock music without the bands of the 60s and early 70s, just as you can't imagine the modern tennis game without Borg, Laver, Connors, etc. But, in sports, you can still qualify achievements of modern players against previous generations. Much more difficult with music (or movies.) How do you compare Radiohead with Pink Floyd, or the Pixies with the Beatles, or Clash with Led Zeppelin?

Hip-hop is like that too now. No hip-hop album will be as good as Illmatic. No rapper will be as great as Tupac Shakur. No group will have the same impact as NWA or the Wu Tang. etc. etc.

Agreed and also people tend to listen to the sounds that made it during their years. I mean it would be unlikely for somebody in their sixties to say Radiohead is the greatest. I'm in my 30's and not really familiar with Pink Floyd and a friend of mine made me listen to Dark Side of the Moon and told me it was one of the best albums he had listened to. It was ok and not really my type of music. The Beatles songs are a bit cheesy for me. So I still stand on my vote for Radiohead as the greatest band lol.

Absolutely. Some of the sounds are really unique and fun to listen to.
I can't imagine that I "get" what alot of American music is about but I certainly enjoy it :)

my man, The Notorious B.I.G. is a better rapper than tupac, they are both the two greatest MC's of all time, but Biggie was way better and had sicker flow. he didnt even write his lyrics down on any of his songs. Tupac was more of a street poet, biggie was a straight up rapper. RIP to both of them.

by the way Fena14, did you like the remix or the original CD better?

Good question. I prefered the original Silent Alarm but there were some great songs on the remix, Helicopter (Whitey version) for example was fantastic. A Weekend In The City is pretty good too, I wasn't too keen on it at first but the more you listen to it the more you realise how deep and well made it is.

What's your opinion?

This was a good list. But there are to many left out, and why aren't there any from the 90's? Come on, the Grunge era gets no representative? Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice n' Chains. Take your pick, one is a top ten "band of all time".

When is Tool coming to North America next?

I have no idea, there's always tour dates online. Man, don't you miss Lollapalooza in 93 (I wasn't there but my friends big bros said it was killer). I was 10 by then and I received Undertow as a gift by accident, been listening to them ever since.

Pearl Jam...I still cant get over how unbelievable they are live. 3+ hour sets of epic jamming...the definitive touring band of the last decade...(all time beatles, marley and Led Zep get the nod)

I know a guy who saw them that year. I went to their show a few years back and it was sweet. They're on my top 5 list.

Oasis imo, What's the Story (Morning Glory) and Don't Believe the Truth are my favourite albums of any band of all time.
