Legend
I'm not sure that I have a perfect perspective on this, but here goes:
For tennis, it was a sad day. I don't understand anybody celebrating it, other than, perhaps, saying that the US Open made the correct decision, regardless of the status of the player in question. Those who are gloating, though, reveal their own lack of character.
The lineswoman? I hope she's okay. Anybody blaming her is just wrong. I don't think there was any malicious intent whatsoever, but I have sympathy for her.
For Novak? I'm happy to be a big tennis fan, and a big Novak fan. As bright a guy as he is, and as thoughtful as he often is, his on-court outbursts are often out of control. In this case, his recklessness did him in, and again, I hope that the lineswoman is okay.
Will Novak learn from this? I hope so, but it's not as if this was premeditated. Cooling competitive fire - and changing on-court behavior - is easier said than done. Obviously, I hope that he will find the imperative to do so, while somehow retaining the competitive spirit that helped vault him to the top.
As for whoever wins the tourney, there should be no asterisks before or after the incident. Period. And it's speculative that Novak would have won #18 here. He probably had a better shot than anyone else, but beating a 128-man field is never a given.
On GOAThood? His DQ hurts his chances for YE#1, and for the record of weeks at #1, and obviously, he can't grab #18 here. Everything tangible is still in his sights, but he's getting older, has more scars, and someone new will claim his first slam next Sunday. Then again, when does Novak ever do things the easy way?
