THE INCIDENT: Hours Later

I'm not sure that I have a perfect perspective on this, but here goes:

For tennis, it was a sad day. I don't understand anybody celebrating it, other than, perhaps, saying that the US Open made the correct decision, regardless of the status of the player in question. Those who are gloating, though, reveal their own lack of character.

The lineswoman? I hope she's okay. Anybody blaming her is just wrong. I don't think there was any malicious intent whatsoever, but I have sympathy for her.

For Novak? I'm happy to be a big tennis fan, and a big Novak fan. As bright a guy as he is, and as thoughtful as he often is, his on-court outbursts are often out of control. In this case, his recklessness did him in, and again, I hope that the lineswoman is okay.
Will Novak learn from this? I hope so, but it's not as if this was premeditated. Cooling competitive fire - and changing on-court behavior - is easier said than done. Obviously, I hope that he will find the imperative to do so, while somehow retaining the competitive spirit that helped vault him to the top.

As for whoever wins the tourney, there should be no asterisks before or after the incident. Period. And it's speculative that Novak would have won #18 here. He probably had a better shot than anyone else, but beating a 128-man field is never a given.

On GOAThood? His DQ hurts his chances for YE#1, and for the record of weeks at #1, and obviously, he can't grab #18 here. Everything tangible is still in his sights, but he's getting older, has more scars, and someone new will claim his first slam next Sunday. Then again, when does Novak ever do things the easy way?

About this, I feel he was frustrated but still trying to keep his cool so he did this kind of in between the complete ball abuse ( violation worthy shot ) and a regular shot. If he'd hit nothing at all - this would go completely unnoticed and I will also add that he should have got the warning for the ball bash a couple of games prior.

Conclusion : he should have launched the ball skywards all the way to Jersey and allow his frustration to completely come out rather than doing this half a*s s**t which ultimately got him disqualified. Simple as that, no Pepe Imaz nonsense, show your emotions and let it fly, get a warning. That way he'd at least allow some of the anger to go out and of course wouldn't hurt a lady who came to do her job and was relaxing in between games. And wouldn't get the DQ.

Why YE#1 is chances are hurt? I cant find the race on the ATP site. He is still in a good lead right?
Not insurmountable, though - about a 1,000 point lead on Rafa, 3700 on Thiem (can pick up a lot here) and more on Med. If Novak made it to the USO final, that would be 1000 more points, and if he won, another 1800.

I agree with your excellent opening post, but will ask the obvious: what about the endless Djoker fans for over a year now posting "40-15" every 20 seconds here? Does your remark also apply to them because it sure should. That was needless gloating over a man who is still GOAT in tennis. The default might be a bit of karma, especially since almost every Djoker fan here claimed #18 "was in the bag" and already won. This should teach both humility and caution when predicting any slam final, except for Rafa at the French Open. But be fair about the gloating-- no fan base ever has gloated more than the Djoker contingent at Wimbledon 2019.

Yeah - plenty of rancid Fed-hate (“cow”, e.g.) fueling the fires against Novak.

TTW is a sad microcosm of where the world is. Sad but true

Fully agreed and we Djokovic fans deserve it. What goes around, comes around.

I nominate you for “TTW dad”. Novak is fortunate to have a fan like you. I’m serious.

I'm only responsible for myself, and that's never been my MO. I'm not a saint, but I try to always show respect for the game, and for those who play it.

Thanks I'm equally (and for longer) a Rafa guy, and have never disliked Fed. It's going to be hard for me to move on from The Big 3, though I was a tennis fan long before this era, so it will happen.

Perhaps, some seem to deserve it, but tennis fans deserve better than this - better than all of the gloating, diminishing and detracting - no matter who it's against (or presumably for).

Most of those fans have now turned their anger towards Novak for not satisfying them vicariously and are pretending to be holier than thou. ;)

Djokovic has 5-4 0-40 to haunt him.
