He hasn't even hit the tour yet and I am already sick to my stomach about this kid. Donald Young is the most overrated player in the history of the game. The hype has made its way into this thread a long time ago. How can we disrespect accomplished players like Gaudio, Safin, Gasquet, etc?
Gaudio?? Gaudio is not overrated at all.
Gaudio is what it is. A huge talented played, with a wrecked mentality, with a beautiful backhand, and with a game which forbids him to be a fast courter player.
He's just what he is. A good claycourt player. Nothing more, nothing less. Some may say his RG title was a fluke. Maybe it was. But he fought those matches, and that draw wasn't easy at all: Cañas in 5, Novak in 5, Enqvist in 4, and then, 3 nice straight wins over Andreev, Hewitt and Nalbandian, and the final against Coria.
And he had a nice run of 5 claycourt titles ina year, right before Nadal started to be the force we know now. In fact, Gaudio beat him in the weirdest match ever (0-6, 6-0, 6-1), exactly one week before Nadal's clay stampede started.
Gaudio is not overrated. He's good. He's not absolutely great, at all, but he's good. Beautiful backhand, beautiful game, entertaining to see his outburst, but nothing more. And he win 8 career titles, including a GS, that's pretty good in my book.
Safin won 2 GS, and 13 other titles, so give him a break. The may have won more, if he could keep his head straight, but that's not a reason to "overrate him". 2 GS, and being #1, also good in my book. BETTER THAN GAUDIO, for suure.
Gasquet is still young. I don't think he's overrated at all, but, so far, an underachiever, which doesn't mean he can't put his mind together, and become the next dominant player. He has the game, and seems to be a fantastic shotmaker. And he knows how to play on clay, and on grass.
None of those are overrated, in my opinion. They're just increeeeedibly talented players who failed to live up to their talents (not their "hypes"), because of mental breakdowns.
