The rebirth of Federer was the death of tennis

Before 2017, the appeal of Federer was that his success came despite his awful backhand that was bullied and could usually barely hit top spin shots (and was pretty damn awful at it when he tried). He represented the sacrifice for aesthetics among utilitarian modern efficiency (two handers). And when he did manage to hit a good backhand, it was ten times better than today because we knew how precarious things were. His success was so great because he had such a weakness.

What do we have now? Federer with a bigger racket ball bashing like anyone else? This is disgusting!

Andy Murray is left as the only thinking man's tennis player, the guy that refuses to hit winners and instead toys with his opponents.

Imagine if Federer wasn't reborn, what a crap year this would have been so far. Djokovic MIA, Murray too, Nadal having sleepwalks to some hard court titles just like he really had on clay... Yuck.

Btw, Federer's backhand isn't weak. Only one guy managed to bully it when Fed was in the prime of his career.

I wanna watch more finals of Murray v. Nole pushing. And them screaming and swearing so much.

Also wanna watch them rally for 20 strokes while nobody takes initiative in the rally and both just keep playing good enough defense that the crowd starts ooing and awwing.
Hmm, this sounds a bit like a contradiction in terms to me.

Nope. It's not fun when Nole plays offense. Because Murray starts pushing.

A little fun when Murray plays offense. Have to hear Nole scream in agony on every shot like he's about to get murdered.

And since neither of them are in their peaks anymore their matches are definitely not gonna be exciting.

Isn't it more fun when Andy starts screaming when constantly moved left and right, not to mention when he realizes he has to chase a dropshot? :D

So you don't like Novak playing offense or defense? Lol, what's he supposed to do to please you then?! Btw your last line makes no sense whatsoever as one of the best matches they ever played was just at the beginning of this year.

Be honest, you still watch every one of their matches don't you? ;)

Only because I'm a fan of tennis and feel obligated to support it. That doesn't mean I'm on the edge of my seat and having my breath taken away.

A lot of rallies they have that are 20-30 shots neither is playing as the aggressor just out there like they're doing rally drills in practice. The crowds don't know any better they're going nuts just because it's a long rally.

Their matches don't interest me for the entire duration. Murray will mix it up more than Novak.

The best match I probably watched of them was the WTF Final last year battle for #1. Only because Murray was actually playing with no strings attached and being the aggressor.

Like their 2012 match at Melbourne. Murray was by far the more aggressive player but he didn't win. That was one of their more tolerable matches.

Agreed we need Djokovic and Murray back at peak so we can watch 5 hour finals with 6 breaks in each set.

Can't wait ...

If you think last year's WTF final was the best match they played you definitely need to delve a little deeper into their back catalogue. :D

For example I really enjoyed Wawa vs. Murray semifinal at RG.

Tons of offense from both. Excellent defending my Mugg and Wawa trying to break through the wall. Nice contrast in that match.

Nole v. Mugg is insufferable to watch because they play such a similar game off the ground and the needle doesn't really move too far from the middle. Plus lately Murray seems to get gassed in their major matches and falls off a cliff at the end.

Haha so true. I'm glad that we've seen a resurgence of Fed and Nadal

What's your opinion on the Fedovic matchup out of interest? Any of their matches you've enjoyed over the years(including the ones Djokovic won)?

Good question

Most of their matches aren't entertaining. Those matches will have some high spots but usually one or the other's level has dropped and not to par.

For example, RG 2011 semi was such a treat. Both guys played amazing offense and amazing defense. My favorite part of the entire match was the 4th set when Fed had just gotten broken and had to break Nole back to stay in the set.

Two points in a row, Fed plays amazing defense and hits a backhand up the line that kisses the tape but is a winner to get advantage point. Crowd went nuts and that Nole grin and smile right after that point was hilarious. It was the "you gotta be ****tin me grin and smile". Then the next point Fed hits a forehand winner inside in and Nole's reaction is straight faced serious look.

Wimbledon 2012 had good hitting.

Their round robin 2015 match was a little dull because Nole's level had dropped.

There have been good ones over the years. Lately Djokovic has had Roger's number. That AO 2016 semi was a drubbing.

I think the world of Federer. As a 42 yo, it is inspirational. As a mom to a 13 yo male competitive tennis player I confess, it's not great for the sport. The fan base needs to expand and that comes from the youth, people outside of tennis world. My son follows Pouille and Thiem a lot. He was pretty disappointed both of them were knocked out in early rounds. If the younger guys with different play styles are on, he loves to watch it on TV. If it is the "old guys" (sorry he is 13) playing he's bored. He thinks all the matches are the same (he has a point). The only exception was watching Nadal win the French Open because he had never seen Nadal that fit and in his element. With the top 4 either retiring or losing due to injuries, it is starting to have a bit of a geri feel to it. Again, big respect for all of them but not sure it's great for viewership/growth of the game. I think my son enjoys the younger players in a way people prefer college football over the NFL.

''He has a point?'' Sorry I don't think either one of you have actually watched Fed play. He plays with more variety and creativity than a hundred Pouilles and Thiems combined. I say that being a fan of both guys btw.

He definitely needs to watch Fed. Because Fed's game has had an influence on almost all the younger guys.

Zverev, Thiem, Raonic, Nishikori, Kyrgios (lol I know), Dimitrov, Pouille, Tiafoe.

You always know the outcome, kind of like the NFL vs NCAA. The only excitement these days is wow Djokavic retired or gee, Andy Murray's lost due to his hip injury. It's just not exciting. By no means do I claim to be a tennis expert, but again, you are not growing viewership the way things are now. I work with a department that is 65% millenial guys who watch a lot of sports, not one of them gives a damn about tennis. Their reason? Oh, it's always going to be one of those four guys. I know, not people that play tennis but you get the drift. Not arguing :) Again, I think Fed is amazing.

I loved the 2014 Wimbledon final. So close, razor thin margins. Federer was serving out of his mind. Honestly anyone else in the world that day he's playing and he wins. But Djokovic would just not be had. Maybe the most impressed I've ever been with Djokovic actually.

All of their US Open battles bring up very fond memories as well. When you get older, losing really doesn't feel as bad anymore. Perspective is key. The constant wrestling for who is better on a given day is a real treat to see between Fed/Nole.

I don't agree. Federer's new prime won't last for long. Maybe until 2018. In that period, the torturously slow progress of next generations can overlap with Federer's last hurrah, filling any possible void that would be left after the departure of big 4. Tennis is actually benefiting from this short, second and perhaps last Fedal era. Also, this last excellent run by Federer will promote tennis around the world. A lot of kids will look up to him and pick up a tennis racquet instead of a baseball bat or an ice hockey stick. The legend is still in progress and will only be completed when the GOAT hangs it up.

Wow, really? OMG! Here i spent all these years thinking Andy was a whiney, bad tempered, mediocre talent who pushed and grinded until his opponent and everyone else literally died of boredom.

What was i thinking? I stand corrected!

Enjoy it, bozos. Once Fed is gone, we are going to enter a dark, dark period for tennis. It'll be mugs and geriatric pushers all the way down.
When Fed retires, for the first time the Senior Tour will cherish a TV contract bigger than the Grand Slams.
