The Serena Charade...

My social media newsfeed is filled with casual tennis fans (the ones who wake up for the semis and finals at Grand Slams, and even then don't know half the players. "Umm...who's Anderson again?") coming to Serena's defense against racist, sexist claims. She has managed to successfully start the conversation around how tennis is unfair to women and men get away with more. No amount of data seems to help.

Am I the only one who's dealing with this? How do you get your friends to shut up and move on?

Guess moving would be a good idea? Here in Europe not many cares about Serena and what happened. Only place I have discussed Serena is in this forum. My friends here find here too much of a drama queen and don't want to give it/her more attention.

I can recommend stop being active on both twitter and Facebook for the rest of your life!
Its not only Serena drama, always some drama going on, and the discussions there leads to nothing anyways.
I still have a Facebook and a Twitter account, but I haven't scrolled them in 2 years. Feels great, not missing out anything.

I like Kevin a lot. He seems like a genuine person. However, he is starting to act like Djoko and a politician that is in a race. He LIKES all causes and all people.

I got tired of Djoker's numerous comments on how wonderful Serena is because she had a baby and is trying to come back as a player. Cause she is a mother! we all know she's not the first player to resume their career after motherhood. He is just trying to win more fans as he has been for years. Just let your play do the talking Nole.

I don't know why either one of these guys has to comment on the Serena debacle, but Djoker was asked about it after his US Open win.

Kevin Anderson is a great guy. My daughter ball kidded for him several times and she reported he was always really nice to the ball kids. Jack Sock's brother is also a great guy. James Blake is not terribly friendly. And Leyton Hewitt was an ass and cursed at the ball kids.

You want to know about a player...ask a ball kid.

Who's Serena?

If you haven't given up on women's tennis before last weekend you're about 25 years late. Gunter Parche cured me, thus allowing a woman with a very flawed game regain incredible superiority over a bunch of no names.

The Seles stabbing was indeed the worst event in tennis history (to my knowledge - certainly the worst event of the last 32 years that I've followed tennis; of earlier famous ones, only Connolly's horse-riding accident comes close, but at least that wasn't intentional human crime) and it did indeed have the terrible result that you described. However, I think that there was a period around the turn of the millennium when women's tennis was highly worth watching again. Certainly, Seles's diminished stature meant it was far from perfect, but there was a large pool of accomplished players around.

Yeah, a friend shared a video posted by something called "Rebel Girls" highlighting meltdowns of male tennis players, stating at the end, "Enough with the double standards". I let her know that the men in the video were warned and/or penalized. It really didn't matter because it wasn't about tennis but rather how men and women are treated differently in society. OK, pretty bad episode to use as an example..

You can watch the whole event of what happened on you tube and then make up your own mind.

Cheers

There are tons of opinion on Serena tantrum on Youtube! The SJW/feminism opinions and analysis take are pretty extreme and spun for laugher if you follow WTA and ATP tour. Totally insane! LOL!

This is the right answer. Both have caused two things: 1)the "like" culture has created a situation where people "like" something not because they care, but because they are looking for quid pro quo, and 2)the idea that other people care what you think.

Ever get a "Christmas card" that is essentially a brag about someone's family over the past year? Usually not even personalized because it's what was sent to all 350 of their "closest friends"? I call them facebook cards, because they essentially read like a facebook post.

I've enjoyed reading the YouTube comments, mostly because, unusually, Williams popularity has taken quite a nose-dive.

Cutting out FB twitter and insta hasn't made me miss out on anything.
I thought It would maybe do, but nothing happened.
I'll fill in the blanks:
Serena had a baby.
Serena went to a Royal Wedding.
Serena wore trainers under her ballgown.
Serena is representing all women and Madonna at the Met Gala.
That's 2018 for you.
;)

Tell them to actually watch the match in question and study the rules of the game and then get back to you. If they are not real fans beyond watching maybe a half of dozen players play casually in big tournaments they dont know enough to make any kind of judgement in the matter anyway
