Timing of Split on ROS

I often feel that my timing on the split step when I return serve is awkward.
I try to unwieght just prior to the server striking the ball and land on the balls of my feet at the moment of impact..

Does this sound correct

thanks, Ken

Do not hop too high and that unweighting should be time so that your landing occurs with just enough time to have perceived direction off the server's racquet face and so that as you land you are pushing off in the direction of the incoming ball.

Split and when your in the air look what way the ball is coming and turn your feet toward there, so when you land you are already on your way

Return of Serve

The split step is actually is misnomer, as it implies a downward, or stepping movement. I like to call it a "hop step" as you actually should be in the air when your opponent hits the ball.

Focus on their sound of contact. This will help you determine the speed, spin, and direction of the ball quickly(much as an outfielder responds to the crack of the bat).

As you land you can then spring in that appropriate direction.

Hope this helps.
