Who do you rate as the top 5 volleyers among singles players. (Doubles specialists don't count otherwise Leander Paes and Mike Bryan win).
Of course not. It's the list of an idiot.Nishikori? Really?
federer, lopez, stepanek, m. zverev are definitely 4 of them, for the 5th one you can bring up several names.
But sad times when only one of the 5 best volleyers on tour is remotely relevant. And Federer's style of play is a massive outlier due to his talent and not repeatable by anyone else really. Hence why anyone else who doesn't strictly baseline is irrelevant in the big tournaments. Forward and attacking tennis is truly dead as an effective style of play.
5 or 10 years ago I might have put Stepanek on the list. But today, I think his game is not particularly impressive (especially given his ranking). He's barely even in the top 100 anymore.Top 5:
Dustin Brown
Roger Federer
Radek Stepanek
Felicano Lopez
Mischa Zverev
I've got:
Feliciano Lopez
Nicolas Mahut
Roger Federer
Jack Sock
Mischa Zverev
I certainly think so.Sock is a good call. From what I've seen, he's got good volley skill and looks comfortable at net.
sick hands.I certainly think so.
Dustin's fun, but he doesn't do anything particularly well. As a volleyer, he might go somewhere in the 10-20 range among guys that focus primarily on singles. If you include the two-way doubles guys, he's not among the top fifty. He wins a match every couple tournaments because he's awkward to play and unpredictable, not because he's good. If he were good, there'd be results by now.
Agree, just an average player in every aspect of the game. His head can sometimes even be below average.Dustin's fun, but he doesn't do anything particularly well. As a volleyer, he might go somewhere in the 10-20 range among guys that focus primarily on singles. If you include the two-way doubles guys, he's not among the top fifty. That's actually a good point. And admittedly, I picked him as my #5 choice mostly due to lack of other realistic options, and because of his amazing AO run. Before that, I had never even seen him play. Lopez, Mahut, and Federer seem to be the three obvious choices. After watching Sock play throughout the year, I put him as a solid 4. As far as #5 goes, I think people are likely to pick the first relevant serve and volleyer who comes to mind. Zverev caught lightning in a bottle a couple months ago, and Stepanek seems to be a distant memory. But playing an effective serve and volley style doesn't necessarily translate into being a great volleyer; one of the reasons I didn't include Karlovic. Dustin Brown (who I actually like watching) seems somewhat overrated in this skill to me. I just haven't seen anything that "great" at the net from him.An extreme form of recency bias is on show here with all the people citing Mischa Zverev because he had a good run at the Aussie Open. His volleys are OK but not great. His dtl forehand and short half volley pick-ups are what do most of the damage for him (aside from his serve). As soon as he played a level-headed opponent who wasn't bamboozled by so many shot balls his volleys were shown up for how average they are.
As would Jamie Murray.Who do you rate as the top 5 volleyers among singles players. (Doubles specialists don't count otherwise Leander Paes and Mike Bryan win).
True. Although I still think of him primarily as a singles player.Sock is a stand out volleyer with great touch as befits a top level doubles player, def top 3.
