Top 6 baseline players in the last 20 years

Purely judging their ability to play from the baseline. My list would be in no particular order:

Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Murray, Agassi, Wawrinka.

What’s yours?

Maybe Hewitt ahead of Wawrinka but both are great. Ferrer is pretty good too. Quite a few others in the honorable mentions department.

I mean duh. I think Hewitt's a better baseliner than Wawrinka but that's debatable. Anyone outside of those 7 is pretty much just wrong.

Hewitt was weak era though. His game couldn’t match the new crop coming through. Wawrinka also annihlated Hewitt in matches.

Depends if you mean overall or peak. If the latter, then it's going to be B4 + Wawrinka + wildcard (can be any one of Agassi, Hewitt, Safin, Kuerten, Coria, Nalbandian, Ferrer, etc).

What injuries did he get?
It doesn't mean that he was getting injured every 3 matches, some people get injured once, come back and are never the same. If you think that pre 2006 Hewitt is the same as post 2006 Hewitt then you need to rewatch his matches asap. Take the most brutal competition you can think of in any era and peak Hewitt would be in the top 10.

I just want to know what injuries Hewitt suffered.

Agassi, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic

Hard to pick from Courier, Muster, Murray and Hewitt

Guess it also depends which surface. Nadal and Muster are way ahead on that dirt surface. Djoko is great on grass. All surfaces? Agassi, Federer and Djoko.

But if I had to pick just one?

Agassi.

Federer and Hewitt are all-court players. But I suppose it depends if you are talking about who is best from the baseline as opposed to 'baseliners'

Time flies, but Courier hasn't played a match in over 20 years. He was kind of cooked a few years before that, too.

In what world was Federer ever better than Nadal from the baseline? Federer went 5 - 1 down in their first 6 matches, 3 on clay and 3 on hard courts.
There's this weird little tournament in France that you really cannot win unless you are the best baseliner. You don't get many free points off the serve. It's called the French Open. Someone on that list has been pretty invincible there which should be a bit of a clue.

Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Agassi, Murray -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Hewitt / Wawrinka / Kuerten / Safin /

Pure baseline skills

Djokovic
Nadal
Safin (although could fluctuate between 1-6 depending on form)
Agassi
Nalbandian

I would actually say that the top 3 can all fluctuate positions dependent on form. Nalbandian and Agassi to some extent, but don't have the peak levels the other have.

And o don't know why many are overlooking Agassi.

Ferrer over Murray?

Lol no. Murray used to make as less errors as him but was way more crafty and multi dimensional. If Ferrer is there than so should be Hewitt.

Nalbandian and Safin can be mentioned of it is about prowess and not consistency.

The thing is all those players listed had the serve to bail them out. Ferrer had only the BL game to live by, and, oh boy, did he live the hi life, in the era of the B4! And he won his fair share against Murray, and anyone not B3!

If by baseliner you mean someone with consistency, then Federer doesn't really belong on the list
Federer won the vast majority of his Slams playing from the baseline. The difference between his baseline play and most others that would be on the list is that he has more of an attacking baseline play.

As we know, Federer won all his majors with his serve and beating up on mugs who were even more clueless from the baseline than he was. He even got the swiss banks to bribe the ATP to allow him to serve in return games which is why he was able to break once in a while. Little known fact from the forgotten amateur 04-06 era. I'd put strong era tycoons like Ferrer on this list before Federer.

For pure ground play does Fed belong here?

Peak for peak I'd back Federer to beat Murray from just the baseline. Won the majority of the baseline rallies in their 2012 Wimbledon final ;)

Also a total beatdown from the baseline at 2010 AO

Fortunately, Murray, like Simon, has B03 matches and B05/YEC matches against crippled, hungover Fed to show his greatness off the baseline.

18 more points from the ground wowza. I bet quite a few of those were serve 1/2 punches though and forced errors but still. Think Fed edged out extended rallies too but only slightly.

Murray won quite a few more 1-3 shot points on his serve. Murray was actually serving/executing behind his serve better the first two sets.

Murray was actually much more hopeless in the longer rallies than Hewitt was in 04/05.

Don’t know how he lost that 2nd. He played some of his best tennis ever in that set.

What about forced errors?

Yeah I chose Wimbledon because I don't think anyone can reasonably argue Murray wasn't peak there. Just one matches obviously but in a big match I'd back Fed for sure.

Somehow weak era mug Hewitt drew about even off the ground with Fed in 04-05 in several slam matches

Yeah Federer really had to steal the 2nd set after playing a miserable first set.

Roof closing helped Fed kick his serve into high gear, but there's no excuse for Murray's percentage falling off a cliff after the 2nd.

Fed was bad in the opening 2 games but he found his form for a while but then let himself down in the last 2 games.

Murray did fall after the roof but Fed was starting to gear anyways. Murray came up with some big serves on big points.

Mandy's serve % is close in all sets except the second, so it was an anomaly and peak Murray is simply incapable of maintaing such a high level for a full BO5 match :D
