I don't understand why the AO is viewed as the "worst" slam. If you people actually go there you will change your tune. Trust me. This slam is organised to perfection

This.
The whole deal seems much better than the US Open, for instance.

The USO may as well be a giant HC Masters really.

It's not the worst Slam and its organisation is superb like you say but some people still think it carries a bit less prestige than the other Slams because it is the newest and many top players didn't bother to play it until the 1980s.

A slam is a slam these days. If u asked rafa which one he would rather win? Im guessing he would hesitate

I don't think it is looked at as the "worst" slam perhaps, maybe just the least prestigious. It's actually my favourite Slam to watch.

A tournament cannot get any better than the AO. I havent been to the other slams though

The Paris Masters and WTF are also awesome (visited both in 2011).
RG has nice seats, but isn't as good (visited 2012) and Wimbledon is a museum (visited 2012).

AO is the best easily of those three slams based on my personal experience.

The only other tournament I have attended is Rome (2012), which is okay too.

You'd have to ask my parents, I didn't handle that side of things then and for the most part I still don't.

Sometimes I wish I was older, but being 18 also has its perks I suppose.

My dad is a tennis enthusiast himself.

Edit: Should mention he is a Djokovic fan these days. ;)

No way are you a teen, by any means. You also mentioned drinking in your hotel room, after walking out on Fed-Seppi match from the stadium.
So you just go alone to watch such matches, and then leave in between, even though tickets are so expensive. And then you're allowed to drink heavy, even though you're still a teenager?
Sorry, but all of that doesn't add up.

A guy at my tennis club has been to all 4. I've only been to the Aussie. I'm retired so I really should go to all 4 but I've just been too slack.

I am 18.5 and have been a tennis fan since 2007.
I can only tell the truth.

18 is drinking age in AUS.
And I never said I drank heavy, unless you call two medium beers heavy.

My dad was with me for the European tourneys (Mum and sister in tow, but not in the stadiums), and I was by myself at the AO this year.
I was on holiday in Europe from late 2011 to mid 2012, not just for the tennis.

The tickets aren't as much as you'd think in package deals, especially if you get in early.

Oh! My bad then, mate. I thought legal drinking age in Aus is 21. Damn you guys are lucky.

Pardon my ignorance. :) You're a good poster anyways.

Oh no... I aint mistaken i have heard people say its the worst slam

The discussion in this thread has not really been about the modern AO (since the 1990s or so). For the most part, the modern AO is pretty much on par with the other slams (even tho' people might say the Wimby or one of the others is more prestigious).

Historically, however, the AO has not been on par at all with the other slams. In the past, the draw size was much smaller (only 32 or 48 instead of 128 players). The AO prior to the mid-70s consisted mostly of Aussie players -- most top player from other countries did not participate very often. Even in the 1980s and early '90s some top players still skipped the AO.

Take a look at the 2nd half of post #71 for more details.

The current Ranking must be as follows: AO > Wimby > USO > RG.

AO is no1 because everything there is perfect. I can't find anything to complain. Even the camera angle for TV viewers is great too.

Wimby is great too but it has too many raining days.

USO is good. They only need to exclude the 5th set tie-break rule and stop delay the final to Monday night of the 3rd week.

RG sucks. No root for center court while too much rain. Crowds are rude and disgusting.

AO is not quite perfect. Dead sports found on some courts not too long ago. High or extreme heat can be a problem as well.

I would not dismiss RG as you have. Have been some pretty unruly crowds at the AO and USO as well. It's not just the French. A slam with clay courts adds another element to the game not seen at the other slams. Would diminish the game to ignore or eliminate this important slam event.

AO today, has the most covered courts of any slam, automatic top spot ranking right there.

I'd say shy of historical prestige (which gives the auto nod to Wimbledon) the AO is the best slam right now.

USO has idiotic scheduling but has night matches which keep it from the bottom.

FO has nothing going for it. No covered courts, no lighted courts, no real prestige.
