UGA Men's Tennis

Looks like some UGA players are using their summer to boost their ATP rankings, perhaps in hopes of gaining entry into the American Collegiate Invitational. Collette Lewis reports:
ITA All-American champion Mitchell Frank of Virginia, Indoor Intercollegiate champion Clay Thompson and NCAA champion Marcos Giron, both of UCLA, are the men's qualifiers to date. The remaining spots on the team will be awarded to the highest-ranked American collegians in the ATP and WTA rankings as of Monday, August 11, 2014.

Austin Smith, currently unranked (career high of 1154), lost in the first round of the Oklahoma City futures to Ray Sarmiento after receiving a WC.

Nate Pasha is currently unranked, though that should change since he reached the SF of the last week's futures in Buffalo, NY. He's in action this week in Rochester, where he plays Pavel Krainik, the five seed, in the first round.

Brief Update on Incoming Players

Our incoming freshman class has been active this summer. Here's a brief update:

Paul Oosterbaan, who's been on campus since January, but redshirted this year, won Michigan ******* Qualifier, then reached the finals of the ******* Closed. He had some great results there, beating Peter Tarwid (5*; Brown commit), Aron Hiltzik (Blue Chip; Illinois commit), Vincent Lin (Blue Chip, c/o 2015), and Thomas Fawcett (Blue Chip; Stanford commit), though this match was called after only 3 games. Oosterbaan retired in the finals against John McNally (Blue Chip, c/o 2017) after splitting the first two sets. This result sets him up for a solid run in Kalamazoo, his home town tournament. FWIW, he lost last year in three sets to Collin Altamirano, the eventual winner, and won the doubles with current UNC Tarheel Ronnie Schneider.

Andy Martinez (4* from Atlanta) placed sixth in the Georgia qualifier where he lost to Alex Diaz, Manny's son and 5* in the c/o 2016. He was the 1 seed in the tournament. At the Southern Closed, Martinez won two matches in singles, but reached the finals of the doubles.

I'm guessing Martinez isn't getting much if any scholarship $$ for tennis though being in-state he probably gets the HOPE scholarship.

Andy Martinez played the ITA Summer Circuit event in Murfreesboro last weekend and lost in the semifinals to Indiana's Stefan Lugonjic in a 3rd set supertiebreak. Lugonjic played at the bottom of the lineup for IU last year.

Paul Oosterbaan played the ITA event at Western Michigan and he too made the semifinals before losing 6-3 6-2 to Jeffrey Schorsch who played #1 last year for Valparaiso in his freshman year.

Austin Smith had received a main draw wild card for the ATP 250 BB&T Atlanta Open but evidently had a scheduling conflict so Nathan Pasha got he wild card instead. Not sure what the scheduling conflict could have been.

The only thing I can think of is that he was signed up to play the qualies of the Futures event in Godfrey, IL and either forgot to withdraw after he found out he got the wild card into Atlanta or assumed he would automatically be withdrawn. When he didn't pull out of the future by the start of the tournament he was automatically dropped from both events since you can't be signed up to play 2 events in the same week. Only possible thing I can think of.

Edit: I just looked up the rule on this and it says he would have been automatically withdrawn so my above statement couldn't be true so who knows.

While it would've been nice for Pasha to pull it out, sound like he has a good perspective on his performance.

"I’ve been playing tennis for 15 years. I have to make serves in that situation. It was all mental. I saw the finish line and I freaked out. I think in those situations I just need to slow down, take my time,” Pasha said. I’m sure Manny (Diaz) will talk to me about it and how I can learn from it.”

UGA Recruits @ Kalamazoo

Walker Duncan (c/o 2015 recruit & seeded 17) won his first round match against Adam Blasinsky, a 4* recruit heading to A-10 school Duquesne in the fall. He next plays Connor Garnett, another 4* recruit, who's heading to play at Santa Clara. He's teaming with Emil Reinberg (Blue Chip from Atlanta) in doubles. They just beat Aaron Sandberg and Peter Tarwid, both 5*'s heading to Brown.

Paul Osterbaan (unseeded) beat Charles Pei (4* c/o 2015 from San Diego) in his first match, before losing to Collin Altamirano, the defending champ, for the second year in a row. He'll play Tate Allwardt (5* recruit heading to Vandy) in the next round. In doubles, Osterbaan and his partner, Martin Joyce (Blue Chip heading to Ohio State) are seeded 11th and beat Kamran Khan (4*) and Joshua Sheehy (4*) in the second round after receiving a bye in the first.

Peter Bertran and Andy Martinez are not playing.

Semi-Pro
Andy Martinez got beaten pretty handily (1 & 3) in the semis of a USTA tournament this past weekend by Aaron Krisan, who I gather played at South Alabama a couple years ago. Maybe not the most encouraging result.

Seems like his best chance of cracking the starting lineup will be in doubles. He just won the doubles title at the ITA Summer Circuit event hosted by Middle Tennessee State.

In the singles, he lost 11-9 in a super tiebreaker to Aaron Jumonville, who played #4 singles for MTSU last year, his freshmen season.

Peter Bertran playing USO qualies as we speak - facing the #11 seed Michal Dembek. Peter up 4-3 in the 1st.

Peter was up 7-5 4-1 but couldn't close it out losing the 2nd set in a TB 7-6(2). One promising sign was after Pete dropped 4 straight games to go down 4-5 he broke back and then held in a service game that had over 10 deuces.

Doubles pairs for the Southern Intercollegiates:

Oosterbaan/Wagland
Pasha/Montgomery
Smith/Diaz
Bertran/Wood

Looks like Andy Martinez is the odd man out to start off the year.

With Peter Bertran playing in the 2nd singles flight I'm guessing he's probably starting the year out at #7 on the depth chart.

Slightly surprised that Martinez is playing singles. Could have seen him heading for a redshirt.

As a comparison, Eric Diaz redshirted his freshman season (2010-2011) and didn't play in any official matches, including the Southern Intercollegiates.

Not a good start to the year for Ben Wagland losing 3-6 6-1 6-2 to Oklahoma's Nick Papac which was a guy that had a hard time cracking the starting lineup last year.

Looks like Wayne Montgomery is the real deal. Would not be surprised to see him at the top of the lineup at the start of the dual season.

Based on the fall's early results, here's a projection of the spring lineup for the Dawgs. Given Pasha's (hopefully short-lived) struggles, though, and Wood's continued impressiveness, I could easily see 3/4/5 being mixed around.

  1. Wayne Montgomery
  2. Austin Smith
  3. Nathan Pasha
  4. Ben Wagland
  5. Nick Wood
  6. Paul Oosterbaan

With the way Wagland has been playing he'll be lucky to play as high as 4. If he doesn't improve more this fall I'd put him at 5 or 6. This was Manny's comments about his 2nd round loss - "Ben competed well, and I believe he is showing progress toward getting his confidence back to where it needs to be and fighting the way he needs to." Ben then came out and lost again in the consolation draw losing to a freshman from Kentucky, William Bushamuka. So far he's just 2-3 with losses to Nick Papac, Lucas Gerch, and Bushuamuka with none of those guys expected to play in the top 3. Just not sure he's ever going to get back to the level he played at his 1st year.
