LONDON (Reuters) - Venus and Serena Williams have pulled out of next week's WTA event in Charleston citing fitness problems.
Venus's withdrawal follows a right elbow sprain while Serena has not yet fully recovered from the left knee injury that has sidelined her for much of 2006, the WTA Tour said in a statement on Friday.
"I regret that I will not have the opportunity to compete there this year and look forward to returning to competition in the very near future," said 25-year-old Venus, who has slipped to number 11 in the world rankings.
The Wimbledon champion has played only one match this year, a shock first-round defeat by Bulgaria's Tszvetana Pironkova in the Australian Open.
Sister Serena, 24, has fallen to a lowly 88 in the rankings and like Venus has only played one tournament this year, the Australian Open where she reached the third round.
"I am very disappointed to have to withdraw...due to ongoing pain in my left knee," the American said.
