The Rafa Nadal Sports Centre, the tennis player's big project for training the young

mundodeportivo.com 02 May 2016

Despite being at a stage when he is at a good level professionally, Rafa Nadal is keeping his eye on his projects outside of the world of tennis. But not that far from it, as the Mallorcan is about to realise one of his greatest dreams with the opening of the Rafa Nadal Sports Centre in his hometown of Manacor.

The Centre has over 40,000 square metres of sports facilities with the latest technological services. The intention is for health and wellbeing to be the perfect complement to sport, in which tennis will play a fundamental role.

Focusing their training methodology on the tennis of the future, Rafa and Toni Nadal, the centre's director, have designed a coaching and training method that will not neglect details of technique, strategy, physical preparation, mental preparation and nutrition, among other factors. All of this will, of course, be based on the values that have taken Nadal to the very top: effort, discipline, honesty and team spirit, among others, combined with tennis concepts like movement, a winning character, concentration and anticipation.

Rafa and Toni will not be alone in this task of guiding the young. Carlos Costa, the nine-time Roland Garros champion's agent and a visible presence throughout the careers of many other top tennis players, will be the centre's technical director. Joining the three of them in the project will be the coaches Marc Gorriz (Head Coach of Men's and Women's Tennis), Joel Figueras (Tennis Director of the Rafa Nadal Academy), Tomeu Salvà (ex tennis player and Nadal's doubles partner some years ago) and Joan Bosch, Carlos Moyà's former coach.

Nadal and his team will be providing the youngsters with a series of facilities designed to help their growth on the sports and, above all, personal level. The hub of the project will be the academy.

Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar

This part of the project is a first class residential school complex where 140 pupils between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age will have the opportunity to follow their academic studies under the American International School of Mallorca while working to become top flight tennis players. The two fundamental points of the Academy are its international academic programme valid for entrance to universities all over the world and its sports programme based on Nadal's experience throughout his career.

At the academy there will be classrooms and offices for the academic side of the young people's education, while there will also be the best of facilities for the practice of sport: 26 tennis courts, outdoor and indoor, clay and hard; 10 padel courts; 2 squash courts; 2 swimming pools, one outdoors and one covered; 1 football pitch and 3 multi-purpose courts for playing handball, indoor football, basketball and volleyball.

Rafa Nadal Sport Residence

As well as the Academy, which combines the two great features of the project, the academic and the sporting, Nadal and his team have prepared a first class residence so that the pupils on the programme can live in a high degree of comfort.

The Rafa Nadal Sport Residence has 70 double rooms and is available for use by the pupils' families, tutors, for sports tourism and by professional and amateur teams from different sports.

At the residence, Nadal's team will provide diverse activities centred on sport, nutrition, health and wellbeing.

Sport Experience by Rafa Nadal, a museum with the tennis player's trophies

Another of the key pieces at Nadal's sports complex will be a museum with all the trophies won by the player from Manacor during his very successful career. In addition, Sport Experience by Rafa Nadal will exhibit souvenirs donated to the museum by other great stars of world sport.

In this part of the complex, it will also be possible to compete virtually against other great world sports stars. Part of the income made from this area of the Rafa Nadal Sports Centre will be donated to the Rafa Nadal Foundation.

Sport Time and the Juaneda Sport Health

One of the most carefully controlled aspects of Nadal's academy will be physical preparation. To achieve that, two parts of the complex will be devoted to that purpose.

The first of these will be Sport Time, a latest generation sports centre which, apart from being at the service of the people living at the complex, will be open to the public.

The second area focused on health will be the Juaneda Sport Health, a medical centre specializing in sports medicine. The Juaneda Group will be responsible for providing medical care of the highest order. The clinic aspires to becoming the sports clinic of reference in Spain and, to that end, will have great professional specialists in physiotherapy, nutrition, personal treatment and general medicine.

Agreement with the American International School of Mallorca

Nadal does not want to neglect the academic side and because of that his sports centre has come to an agreement with the American International School of Mallorca for the children that live at the tennis player's academy to study under this first class private school.

The International School gives classes completely in English for children between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age from all over Mallorca. The native English speaking teachers teach an international academic programme valid for university entrance all over the world. So, the children will be able to combine studies to a high academic level with the practice of tennis.

Sport Café and the Sport Xperience Store, relaxation zones

Nutrition will be one of the sports complex's basic aspects and this will be taken care of at the Sport Café, a restaurant open to the public with a variety of high quality gastronomy on offer. The smallest detail in this respect will be supervised by top nutrition specialists.

This relaxation zone will also have large areas for carrying out social and recreational activities. Their objective is to turn it into a reference centre for all sports enthusiasts.

Finally, the Sport Xperience Store will put the finishing touch to the complex. This store, with independent access, will sell both Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar and Nike sports products. The best tennis equipment in the world, among other products, will be available there.

Congrats to Rafa; I'm sure the place will be great. Don't mind his fans; they are bitter they they can't visit it since juveniles without parental supervision will not be allowed on the premises. Tio Toni rule.

Let me be the first to ask, though: when is the Helsinki branch opening?

Looks pretty awesome. I'm sure it will be crazy oversubscribed.

It lost some of it charm once Spain started moving towards more strict anti-doping laws.

But the weather is nice and the recreational players will have a good time there from November till May.
