I need to tell my fellow academy coaches to see this thread. But they will only laugh at me. So much disinformation. Tlm. You are in the words of tw arming the arm. If you want a smoother stroke you know what to do.
Your opponent is decent but don't get carried away singing his virtues because it softens the blow of being owned by him. He just showed you why your arm shove fh is bad. You can't hit it on the move. I am going to go drown myself in tw vodka so I don't need to see this anymore.

and it still starts from the ground up, but just not as strongly when the loading is not strong. Maybe that is what you meant?

I described it in depth, in 2 or 3 posts.

Curiosity, if you're out there....help!

Well, 99% of coaches only say what you should do with the racquet. I've yet to see a coach who focuses on what to do with the body! And that's bad, because I have big trouble figuring out what to do with different body parts, if coach is asking to do something with the racquet. TBH, most of the coaches are pure nonsense, I learn better by my own trial and error, and by studying youtube clips.

I edited my post, because I came off too harsh. Could I ask you to edit that quote as well, of mine?
Thank you sir!

It starts from the ground, if he was in a proper loaded position .

What I'm saying is it always starts from the ground .....properly loaded or not,... no "IF".

The question is one of quality.
If loading is better the k-chain is empowered and stronger. If the loading is weak, then it still comes up the chain, but just weaker and likely less effective. So I think you and Jack mean to load up hips better, to power the shoulders better.

Yes, loading of the glute muscles on the back leg is #1 key. I personally even enhance the stretch on the back glute by kinda tilting the torso a bit so that I can put even more bodyweight over the stretched glute. Then from there on, I just explode off the glute, and the rest of the kinetic chain transmits that energy into the racquet. This kind of glute-centric power generation is much more efficient than the shoulder based power that OP uses.

So to highlight what OP should focus on, it's this loading of the glute IMO. It's quite hard to use the hips, if there's no loading.

Well regarding level, tlm's opponents seems better than the poster Maximaqq based on videos. Max claims he's a 5.0, so I don't see why tlm's opponent couldn't also be a 5.0, especially given he's not giving his all in the video.
Max would crush the guy.... and I'm not convinced max is 5.0 (but could well be if he played as much as he posts.)

Point is careful touting how a 4.5/5.0 is pressing you when for the most part he's simply giving you feeds in a casual hit.

And the real point is I've taken a hard look at my hip involvement and have concentrated on opening them to initiate swing last couple of days. Discovered that when it really feels good I tend to hit more at the top of the racquet bed -- need to get arm more extended.

Maybe drop the tension on your strings a little? Because it seemed like a fair amount of your balls were dropping short

It's funny b/c the guy in black is a very good player. You could lower tension, raise tension, use newest racquet, and not make a dent. This isn't a dig at the OP but rather that there are no shortcuts really, just have to get better :)

I agree there is no magic racket or string tension that is going to help me against this guy. I only wish that it could be that easy, maybe more like 2 years at a tennis academy.

tlm - I like your focus and consistency in your other vids I just saw (playing someone your level).

I think you need to re-work the mechanics of your forehand. Do you get a sore shoulder after playing? Looks like that would take a toll. You're losing a lot of power potential too by just arming it like that. I'm sure you're aware of this though.

You also seem very afraid of coming into the net, there were times I saw where you'd have had a very easy put-a-way volley if you'd just trusted your approach and come in.

What level do you usually play at?

I am 4.0 level player. I never have a problem with my shoulder and I hit almost everyday. And yes I am not getting near the power I could because of to much arming the ball.

You are right I need to work on net game and follow more shots into the net.

Yes you step first, but what's key here is what is leading the way of the core rotation into the shot? Like I said before, it should feel to you like the hips are pulling everything else along for the ride and you shouldn't feel like you are working hard to swing.

Watch this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYtS0jAbW4U
It's a simple dril, but it really works. Also those 8-Boards are
great for learning to use your hips more. I actually have one
and it feels weird at first, but you can use it at home without
hitting balls and it teaches you balance and how to lead the
body with the hips.

More on the 8-board: Watch at :45 into this video.
I think this would help you a lot.

Nice post Jack.

I had a few lessons with a MTM and he mentioned Brody and there were alot of figure 8 motifs in all the lessons.

You know how the feet move on the board? He was having me do that on the court, actually moving the feet on the court. That was tough for my feet to comprehend...are you supposed to move your feet like that on the court?

I probably still arm on some levels but I have to say, hitting loose and focusing on rotation you can get lots more power and spin than with the arm alone.

I find that RHS is off the hook when you get things right. Also I have never had wrist problems but man I am getting alot more force on the wrist from the loose swings and while its not injured, its not used to that kind of movement so I think I need to build up to it.

Yikes. Net is totally different mentally. No conservatism allowed. You need to flip a switch. A net player would rephrase what you wrote:

"You are right I need to work on net game and put the ball away."

No rallies, you are there to end the point either way.

I mention this because you harp on your consistency and grinder style. If you can't change that mentality then its probably not wise to work on the net game so much, though I agree with Govnor its a great add to your game.

I'm not even what I'd consider average at volley's, but everyone has to be able to come in and put something easy away at 4.0. There will be times when you're playing a fit pusher/grinder and you have to be aggressive just to end points and not be there all day.

I play an identical game-style to tlm and have no problem coming in to the net. I don't see why a conservative (ie. percentage tennis) mentality means you can't put the ball away? If the ball is short, I approach because it's the percentage play, and playing the percentages well is what wins you matches. Murray is a classic counter puncher and has great volleys and can put anything away up there...And I don't think he has an aggressive mindset when playing

tlm doesn't have to change his mentality really. He just has to recognize where there are high percentage oppurtunities at the net and take them

I agree, you can be cautious and play the percentages. I play that way. But you do have to come in sometimes if you want to progress as a player. Winning points the easy way pays dividends as the match goes on.

You know shroud sometimes it's really hard to understand what you are saying. The way I responded to the suggestion of going to net more was fine, but you have to reword it correctly. It seems strange because it is the same thing. Do you really think that I don't realize that going to the net means finishing the point?

I have gone to net many times and totally understand that it is to end the point, in the past I used to go to net quite a bit. But now prefer the backcourt game. You say I harp on my consistency and grinder style? Well let me fill you in on the fact that playing the way I do is very effective in rec level tennis. Much more than trying to hit big shots that you can only hit maybe 30% of the time. Or rushing the net on a mediocre approach shot.

I agree in principle. But its clear from the vid he is not comfy up there and well when people arent comfy its easy to get tentative regardless of the percentages. The net is not the place for that. And believe it or not I AM trying to help him.

FWIW I think Murray would be much better if he was more aggressive. I can't stand watching his matches for that reason. They are soooo boring.

Yes his matches are boring to you but he is a multi millionaire from playing his style.

I can play at the net so so on regular volleys, but I am pretty good at swinging volleys so I have been working on moving in on weak replys and putting them away with swinging volleys.

Exactly and very well put Bob. I guess some have this distorted thinking that because a player plays smart high % tennis then that means they can never finish a point at the net or something.

Again it's hard to understand what you are saying here. But yes I am a grinding counter puncher style player. That is what works best for me with the talent and shotmaking ability that I have right now. I have to be in decent shape to play this style of tennis.

I have many guys that do not like the physical challenge of playing me, because unless they are much better than me like the guy in the black shirt is, they are in for a workout win or lose. Not saying it's pretty but I use what I have and consistency is really my only strongpoint.

You can't forget you also have the ultra mega spin fh. Most players can't handle that at all. Lots of pace plus height and spin. Very very hard to handle.
I used to hit a weaker version of that. But since my maci lessons I have the maci fh now.

Only if your a 3.0. Or a 5.0. The coach at sadlebrook (where I was at today) says to only practice against lower and higher players for the next 6 months. Then I will reach 5.0 within the year. I was going to play sureshs but he never got back to me about the message I sent him. I'm in nyc for 2 weeks still.

It might have gotten into Spam. Was that when you got back from Texas? But I do check my spam folder too. Unless hotmail filtered it out completely. Let me know when you get back. I should be reachable through the account here. Maxi just contacted me now through it about something else.

cheetah is definitely above 4.5. I don't really know any 5.0 players so can't talk to that.

There is no way in hell that you can reach 5.0 in one year! But of coarse you claimed to be a 3.0 just a couple of months ago and now you are already a 4.0 and have a forehand that 4.5 players cannot handle so maybe one more trip to macci and you are there.

It's quite dramatic really. Have you seen the show the biggest loser? I had this biggest loser moonball fh and now I shed the weight of that horrible form and play much higher level tennis. But I just can't win matches yet. That will just take more time for my new form to be ingrained.
