hi all,

I'm looking to get a budget reel and found that these 2 strings always comes up when people talk about low cost, high performance poly.

I have narrowed it down to either Volkl Cyclone in 17g (1.25mm) or 18g (1.20mm) and Focus Hex in 16L (1.23mm) and 17L(1.18mm). My question is, out of these 4, which is your favourite gauge and why?

Thanks!

Focus Hex was a bit vanilla for me. Everything was decent, but nothing great. It was fine, super average.

Cyclone was good. Not my cup of tea exactly, but a good string nonetheless. Much better than Focux Hex IMO.

As for gauge, it depends on the racket. I have a 93" head and a tight 18x20 pattern, so the 18g is my preference, but if it was an APD or something similar, 17g would be my choice.

If you are not a string breaker, go with the thinner gauge. Both strings play better at the thinner gauge so you will immediately reduce 50% of your options.

Focus Hex is my vote because it's good at everything. Most strings have pro's and cons while the Hex is a great all around string. Cyclone is too springy for me and because of its softness I found it notched faster in the mains than Hex. I keep Focus Hex and Tourna Big hitter silver around as my two high performing budget reels.

Focus Hex 17L gave me more spin, and seemed to hold tension longer.

Cyclone wasn't bad, though.

Thanks everyone for your reply and feedback! Personally, i feel that cyclone loses tension/playability way too quickly but it is softer than focus hex.

My only problem with focus hex is that i find it a tad too stiff. Do you guys feel that focus hex 1.23mm is stiff on a 16x19, 100 inch racket?

Both are good, value strings. If you are not a string breaker, the MSVFH 1.18 is a very nice string and an excellent value. It, also hybrids well with a SG, such as Wilson SG Control (more feel) or Gosen OGSM (crisper).

Focus Hex is stiffer as others have mentioned, however the 1.18 plays really well, particularly in a 18/20 frame. Great spin and decent power. Cyclone 1.25 is a good all-rounder, best strung below 50lbs IMO
