Vollaix Agassi Shirt

TW needs to carry this line.

Not anytime soon. Haven’t heard anything and it’s just as well. We have a nice thing going here in Atlanta. TW would have been nice because it would have allowed us to expand to customers outside the US, as they can offer much lower shipping rates. That’s a big problem with Europe (and even Canada - home to 127mph). We will keep on trying, but we have moved past Agassi and onto Chang and McEnroe this summer:

Oh, my God! I've just npticed these new polos from Vollaix yesterday! Definiteley my chice! Especially those resembles Reebok that Mecir, Flach, Seguso, Chang, Svensson and many others used (also from women site - Sanchez-Vicario, Katerina Maleeva, Mandlikova, Rehe, Rinaldi), 1987 Wimbledon Mixed Champions Bates/Durie. That's what immediately come to mind.
Kanza, what was the name of this original model?

The other one is famous Mac's shirt from immortal 1980 Wimbledon Final, the greatest ever. I can say that Vollaix version is better than ST remake that was made several years ago.

ST rolls out this polo in red/navy every 5 years or so. I haven’t seen them reissue the light blue/ navy since 2003 or some time around then. I think it’s an important shirt because Mac wore it at the 1979 us open in his win against vitas. The name of the Reebok shirt? Not sure. You would have to ask @dl125

I can answer that.

Unfortunately I don’t have any all cotton options for you. One of my pet peeves from owning tennis shirts back in the 80s and early 90s was the fact that they were all made in 100% cotton. Two things would happen.
1. In the case of many Ellesse shirts, they would shrink 2 sizes.
2. upon washing them the cool designs would fade. The Fila and adidas shirts were the worst. I loved the Becker and Edberg designs and they were so hard to find here in Atlanta. When I finally did, it would mellow out after just one wash. It was the same for the Sampras tacchini designs. Even early CoolMax shirts (100% du pont polyester) designs by Nike in the late 80s and 90s faded and (even worse) began piling. I washed them as little as I could. I even dry cleaned them! Still, the color faded. It was never the same after the first wash. The Nike Agassi shirts of 1990 had a cotton collar and poly body, a terrible combo whereby the du pont CoolMax poly would fade and pile, and the cotton collar would fade to a much greater extent. The color of the collar wouldn’t match the body of the shirt anymore!

Ironically, I didn’t embrace the full switch to poly shirts when it happened around the time of the 2003 Nike line. I couldn’t believe Nike was abandoning cotton! The last great cotton shirt was the one Sampras wore to win the 2002 US Open.

Why am i telling you all this? When I started making the shirts I didn’t want the same problem, so I stuck to all polyester: Poly pique and smooth poly. I know some people out there still love cotton (as I did), but the market for cotton activewear is slim.

Hey @topspn how is the fit? Really itching to get something from this brand. I am into cotton Ts these days (never have been a 100% polyetser shirt guy tbh). I am guessing thee are full 100% polyester? Do they have any cotton options?
@haqq777 The sizing for the ones I got are a bit on the loose side and not fitted like a lot of shirts these days. I personally prefer that bit of loose fit somehow feels better for me. The material as Kanza already mentioned does not contain cotton but truly feels quite good and does not feel like some cheap texture like under armour produces these days. I have t-shirts and tennis shirts that are cotton, cotton-poly blend and all polyester. You can get poor quality and great quality in all of them. The good quality polyester ones seems to survive forever while I already threw out a bunch of others. These really have very nice quality and feel to them so in my book high end quality polyester fabric

@KANZA If I could make a suggestion (or request) make a 1976 Robert Bruce - Jimmy Connors shirt. The one I'm talking about had navy-red-navy horizontal stripes on the shoulder area on the front and back. I think he wore it at the 1976 US Open. I'm sure if anyone goes looking they could find the one I'm talking about.

As for my want of this shirt, I had one in High School and my mother threw it in the washing machine with other white clothing and a half a bottle of Clorox....completely destroying it.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Bummer about no cotton options (for me). I haven't touched my closet full of Nike/Adidas poly polos and crews in months now. Most of my crews from Nike/Adidas that I have accumulated are in great shape even after multiple washes. Ones with applied graphics have worn a bit but I have had no sizing issues or fading designs etc like you mention. In addition, I don't feel like the material bogs me down like some say, and personally I just like the feel better than even the smoothest of polyester blends. Matter of personal taste I guess.

Makes sense from a business and market perspective though like you said. Everyone is all about polyester now.

Like to see if @KANZA could make ST Pat Cash 1987 Wimby short.

You mean the shirt? Easy to do. Red stripe, green stripe, bold blue stripe, Red stripe, green stripe. I have a client in Dubai that wants this too. I might do a small custom batch this winter. I do all my custom orders during the off season.

The Chamlin reminds me of a Gasquet shirt
It is! However, it was also a ST from the 70s before that. Connors made it popular. It came in red white and blue like the French flag and red white and green like the Italian flag.

People also think we copied Nike for our Hamptons polo. Not the case. In fact, we made our samples in 2016. Nike made it for Fed in 2017. Who made the original? Not Nike, and not us. Moncler, the famous French outerwear designer.

Yes, the shirt. And maybe matched shorts also, don't know if it will be popular.

I have some products from Vollaix and it's top notch. Highly recommended. Plus the owner is really cool and cares about tennis and it's history.

Planning to get the Agassi shirt myself. TW is missing out on this line...not sure why they're sleeping on Vollaix.

I did that 1989 one:
rs=w:600,h:600

I liked it, and it started with a client in North Carolina that requested one. It kept itching at me. I finally gave in. I didn’t make a lot of them. I mostly did it because I loved the dark purple sleeve version mcenroe wore in his 1989 run to the Wimbledon semis.

The Guga shirt that is now up on the Vollaix website looks awesome! Question for anyone that knows/remembers.....did the shirt come in the black/yellow and black/white colors back in the day? Personally I'm kinda liking the black/yellow.

KANZA

I don’t think they did. I think it was only yellow/blue. I made it in 3 color variations because I wasn’t sure the royal blue shorts were going to match the royal blue in the shirt. It was a gamble. It worked. They match.

The idea behind adding the the black/yellow and black/white color ways was to provide a more subtle alternative to those that like the design, but not so much blue. The blue shorts and the blue/yellow polo can be a bit much for some. Personally, I like the yellow/black a little better. I can wear the black shorts and it’s a darker look.

The white /black color way was made based on the success of the Adidas zebra print at RG a few years ago. It did well and (although not a replica) works well to imitate the zebra design.

It's funny, as I was looking at the black/white I was thinking of that Adidas RG kit. As great as that blue/yellow Guga shirt is, I think you are going to have higher demand for the other two.

One more question as I think of it, is the 2019009 based on anything? It is sort of reminding me of the 2012 British Olympic shirt by Adidas with the Union Jack graphic....maybe I'm way off base. Anyway, cool design!

That’s the Times Square. I wanted to name it for something associated with the US Open. The design was inspired by Eddie Van Halen’s 80s guitar. I always thought it was a cool graphic design. I think he named that guitar Frankenstein, and there are plenty of pics on the internet. This is a link to one:

Frankenstrat not Frankenstein. Because he combined a Stratocaster ("Strat") with a Gibson.

FYI, there is currently a temporary guitar exhibit (though there are other instruments on display such as Ringo's original Beatles Guitar kit) at The Met Museum in NYC. Among the many guitar's on loan as part of the exhibit is Eddie Van Halen's original "Frankenstrat." There are many other classic guitars on display along with their stories and for anyone in the area it's worth a detour if any interest in music, music history, guitars or art. (y)

And I can tie the exhibit directly to tennis. There are various posters a part of the exhibit and one was of a somewhat notorious 1968 show by The Doors at the Singer Bowl in Flushing Meadows Park, NYC. The Singer Bowl was subsequently turned into old Armstrong Stadium and the old Grandstand when the USTA moved the USO.

Thanks topspn.

I’ll be at the US Open on Sunday (9/1) wearing the Guga inspired Brazil polo. I’ll have 4 extra of them with me to give away (1 small, 1 med, 1 large, 1XL). If anyone sees me and I have your size on hand, it’s yours.

Yes, I’ll have one for you @J011yroger

Coffee cup? Which one is that? I love the 1990 Wimbledon “rain and thunder” looking shirt. The 1988 is also great. Edberg won both years.

Didn't you do a prototype of the 1988 Edberg at some point? Seems like I recall seeing it....unless I'm thinking of something else.

Found it: https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/adidas-torsion-edberg-comp.648318 Both are great shirts. If you do the 1988 I feel you need to change the colors but I like the VX in place of the SE...really cool!

Thanks, but that was just a mock-up, not a real sample. I still have the design file of the image I drew. I could make a sample and see what it looks like, but I don’t think it would sell well. Maybe in the future.

The other pic was the HELAS edition of the edberg adidas. I got that for $15 on clearance.

Some projects look so-so on paper and you have to make a decision on whether or not to make a sample. I didn’t make that one.

If the mock-up looks interesting enough, you make the sample. Sometimes the sample beats expectations and you green light production. Other times, you look at it and say, “what was I thinking?” Not everything is a winner.

The coolest circumstance is when people ask for custom stuff, we make it, and it turns out ten times better than expected. When that happens, we add it to the next season’s collection.
