Much as I blame Sumyk for the deterioration of her game (I don't know how a player's best shot ends up becoming their biggest liability), Muguruza herself has admitted she is very difficult to coach. For that reason alone, I think Conchita is probably the right call. Clearly Garbiñe trusts her, and Conchita seems to be good at dealing with Garbiñe's moodiness.

Ferrer's an intriguing idea too. In any case, I suspect a Spanish coach is probably going to have an easier time navigating her temper/stubbornness than someone whose first language isn't Spanish.

Part of me thinks the game has already passed her by (Osaka has more power, Barty and Andreescu more variety, and all three seem much more focused with their eyes on the prize), but she's still pretty young given the current lifespan of a professional tennis player, so there's no reason someone as talented as Muguruza can't make another push for the top ten and even perhaps another slam run or two.

How apt to beat Pavlyuchenkova who is now coached by Sumyk sweet revenge for the rubbish form she had under him. She finally had some sense and hired Conchita like how they blossomed in her Wimbledon win glad to see her enjoying her tennis and flourishing again.

A lot of women players these days have wide shoulders that resemble a man's shoulders and are as tall and muscular as a man. Highly suspicious. Serena, Sharapova, Muguruza, etc

She's one of my favourite players on the WTA side and I really can't be annoyed. I feel since the AO 2020 she's been a factor at Slams and that's so important at this stage of her career. All it takes is a draw to open up or a hot run of form and she will go deeper. She likely would have gone much deeper at the AO had she not ran into Osaka, and Jabeur played very well yesterday. I don't know what happened at RG but it seems some issues in the preparation explain her R1 exit (it was nearer her injury problem, right?). She won Dubai and made the F in Qatar, taking a pummelling from Kvitova but she seems to have a really poor match up against Kvitova and Pliskova, for some reason. So bad it makes you wonder if their fire power just makes her panic because so many worse players give Kvitova and Pliskova a much bigger run for their money.
Maybe it's too late in her career but I think she needs more variety. She used to play doubles with CSN years ago so I wonder why she's not a bit craftier, but I suppose playing her game is likely going to provide a few more big results in her career even if they're just 1000 wins.
Now, all eyes on the USO swing. She's played very well and much more consistent this year than some previous years. She's only ever made R4 at the USO which is surprising, so hopefully she can have some decent results and aim for a QF at least there. I'm really curious to see who steps up at the USO as a lot of the crafty players are doing well on the clay and grass, but when we hit the hard courts again it's a bit more of a given that the power players can knock through defences.

Hence so few actual tournament wins. Her winning majors flatters the rest of her career thus far.

What a result for Garbiñe! Not only was this her 5th final of 2021, it was her 3rd title of 2021 (10th of her career - 3 of these now coming in Mexico!) and her biggest since Wimbledon in 2017. Even though she had a few erratic patches in 2021, and a brief injury after her initial hot form at the beginning of the year, this has been her most consistent year and cements her as one of the dangerous players for the AO, RG and Wimbledon.

Mugu's finals by year:

2014: 2
2015: 3
2016: 1
2017: 2
2018: 2
2019: 1
2020: 1
2021: 5

Of course, you'd sacrifice consistency for majors like at 2016 RG and 2017 Wimbledon, but this is a good sign for next year if she's able to stay happy, healthy and hungry.
