Watching federer for the first time

well today, I finally completed the pilgrimage I had been hoping for and got to see the magician in person, and boy oh boy was it awesome.

Firstly, I have to talk about the atmosphere. Absolutely electrifying. The crowd is amazing. The supports and chants came after every single point. 'Lets go Roger lets go'. You can feel the tension building up as soon as you see the players walking through the tunnel and then, as soon as the music drops, the crowd erupts and you can barely hear yourself. You could tell the crowd was firmly in favour of federer, with then cheering every single point, with only claps coming for berdych.

In terms of federer though, the guys is just insane. Ever since I saw him coming out the tunnel, I could feel his aura. I literally couldn't believe that the guy I had been watching and admiring all my life and arguably the GOAT was walking to and sitting right in front of me. People emphasise how his movement is incredible, but u have to be there to realise it. The guy just float across the court His backhand isn't too bad, but you could definitely tell it was his weak point. His forehand though.....(do I need to go further). Serving was solid today. His variation also surprised me. Pulling drop shots from outta nowhere. In 2013, I saw nadal vs ferrer at the WTF, and although that was surreal, seeing federer tops it. The crowd was no where near as active in the nadal match. Seeing nadal was incredible as well, his forehand was a monster and his speed was amazing, but federer said forehand looked more versatile and moved more efficiently. Federer also signed a lot more autographs than nadal, though they both signed a lot and are known to be lenient to fans. This however might be the case due to federer winning the awards therefore bring happy and gracious

I know I have fanboyed a lot, but I couldn't help it :)

In terms of tennis, the court this year still looks slow and gritty. Slower than 2013 for sure. The players are also very conservative. I watched top tennis trainings video and. Was amazed by the pace, but in the actual match, the players took the pace and a lot more top spin was used for safety. In terms of the amount of topspin, you can really tell berdychs forehand is really flat as there was little Kick and the hit sounded direct, but federer, the ball kicked up a lot and the sound was a lot more brushy. Federer said racket also sounded quite low, so I'm guessing he plays in the 40s. Thanks for reading (sorry for the length ;) if you guys have any questions, please ask

My post from the Federer vs Berdych thread

Got to the o2 5:50 (doubles started at 6). Long queues for security reasons obviously.
Got past that, then into the arena. I had very very good seats, incredible view. I was sitting opposite the umpire, row C. So that's 2 rows from the court basically.

Doubles first - that was great. Lol I saw the Bryan's play Verdasco and his partner in 2013.. they lost that day too. Maybe I jinx em lol. That guy Rohan was sick, so was his partner. Creamed the Bryan's, lots of winners and great returns. Arena was maybe.. 70% filled at this time.. the corporate guys with free tickets usually sit in the bar until the "main event". The doubles finished quite early and most people went to the toilet or to get a beet before the singles matches.

So, Federer - Berdych! Got back to my seat.. I had empty seats on either side of me while watching the doubles but now I had a family on my right and 2 friends on my left.
So I'm watching the court, players just about to come out and boooooom.. ridiculously good-looking woman rolls up, with a couple friends, court level, so very close. Everyone is staring. Then I realize, DAMN THAT'S ESTER OOOOOOOOOO.. yeah she's hot lol

Berdych comes out.. nice applause.. Federer comes out, the place erupts. The noise was deafening. Expected of course. Phones out, recording, pictures etc etc. Warming up. Now I find out the man to my right with his wife and daughter (hot).. I think he was czech.. was going crazy for Birdman. Kept saying something that sounded like "BUD BUD BUD TOMAS or BOOT BOOT BOOT TOMAS" ..?

The match.. slow start from Roger but did what he needed to do and pulled away in the second. Only seen one match live before.. the WTF Final 2013.. the strokes don't shock me, like the quality of them, but when you see the lunging, sliding and full-stretch shots in person.. it's ridiculous, you're cringing for their body. Incredible stuff.

Haha, there was a nice moment in the second set when Roger was about to serve, doing his 3 bounce thing and he drops the ball.. shakes his head, says sorry. Everyone was like "don't worry Roger, we love you!!" cheesy, I know, but it was nice. Also when he was up in the second, someone near me said "play with your left hand Roger!"

Overall great experience.. glad I've finally seen the GOAT live, and playing well - I'm going to see Federer - Djokovic on tuesday as well. Can't wait. You gotta enjoy yourself when you can. As the Paris attacks reminded us, tomorrow isn't promised..

Very true. U don't know when your last day is. Well I hope you go home happy on the Tuesday with a federer win and feel like it was worth it. i personally was right above where the players entrance and exit. But for the entrance, I went closer to behind the seats. No way was I missing my opportunity of being so close.

Must have been a wonderful, lifetime experience. I am happy for you. Hopefully it will not be the last time you had a moment like that. :)
I wish I get the chance to see my favorite live before his retirement.

I also saw Federer in person once, it was a great match, at one point rather than swing his racquet he used telekinesis to send a 250mph ace flying by his opponent, hit the line perfectly. Many spectators passed out as they could not handle being in his presence.

After the match instead of using the players tunnel he simply ascended to the heavens on a cloud, I could have sworn I heard an orchestra serenading him but there was none to be seen.

I agree that Fed is absolutely electric in person. The only other guys I've ever seen who had that insane vibe around them in person were Becker and Andre.

As a Rafa fan, I would have been paying more attention to Ester than the match itself :). Now when Rafa is on court......theres gotta be at least 100 hot as fk models to distract me from the match.

I had a similar experience when I saw Roger playing live. The massive aura, the electricity in the atmosphere. When he walked onto the court my heart was bumping 150 bpm and shivers were going down my spine. It was amazing. It was like I had witnessed the second coming of the Messiah.

Excellent post.
I'm glad you enjoy watching Roger live as much as I/many of us do.

The best the sport has to offer.

I was there too - Federer quite simply isn't just one of the best tennis players of all time - he is one of the best sportsman of all time. It is a true privilege to watch him live before you . If anyone hasn't seen him live before I say do it! Before he retires.

Thank you for sharing your experience. You and La Grande wrote it so from the heart. Please, keep it up and write your reports about Tuesday match. I look forward to that one.

Is Federer more arrogant in person than he is on the TV? :p
Overall he doesn't seem very arrogant in person. But when I saw him in Helsinki and they interviewed him after the match against Jarkko, he was asked about being a ballkid in his youth. He replied something like "Yeah, I started out as a ballkid in the 90's in the Basel tournament, which I won about two weeks ago by the way".

It was pretty funny, because it was completely unrelated to the question. He just had to mention it :D

An aspect not much talked about is Fed's study of his opponent. There was a USO match against Robredo in 2007 probably. He would just play out the first 6 or 8 games of the set without expending any effort. One would get an impression opponent is hanging with him.

Come the deciding game you can see Fed produce couple of magical shots and win the game effortlessly. It was as if he could channel those "on demand" .

This is the reason why even in a recent interview i heard some player say with Rafa you cannottake for granted a single point while with Fed he always studies you and he will lull you and give you 3-4 games per set.

I suggest you do, even if that mean paying extra. There is nothing quite like seeing federer, especially if he's your fav. I hope it's not my last time too XD

I look forward to writing it. I feel like, it's my mission XD. Thank by the way. I have always watched him from the tele, so after seeing him physically for the first time, you could imagine was going through. I literally had goosebumps when I saw him

I saw Roger "live" thrice- once in Bangkok and twice in Shanghai (when the Year-End Championships were played there, and when the event was converted to a Masters Series 1000).
The experience was incredible, and like the OP I was really awed by what Roger could do with the ball. In those matches, Roddick and Mayer both has match points against Roger and still could not win! :)
Would highly recommend it to anyone who still has the opportunity to watch Roger (before he retires) :)
