What are some skills that top pros aren’t particularly known for, but were very much above average in comparison to their peers, and more effective than they are generally given credit for?

Pete Sampras - return of serve
Andre Agassi - dropshot
Lleyton Hewitt- volley
Andy Roddick - slice backhand
Nikolay Davydenko- forehand
James Blake - 1h backhand
Rafael Nadal - 2h backhand
Marat Safin - volley

What else?

Semi-Pro
Agassi's lobs.
Peak Federer's return of serve and 2006/2007 backhand.
Hewitt's forehand @Sabratha

Those ones come to my mind right now. I'll think of more later.

Nadal's Defensive reverse Slice Backhand ( i mean the slice which swings in opposite direction to the normal one ) like this
Whenever he is in trouble in Backhand side,he uses this slice and is almost always able to hit it deep..it gives him time to regroup, if it falls short opponent has to come to net and again he gets a chance to pass him.
In short, a rally that was 90% in favour of opponent is almost neutralised by that shot. This is the specific shot that makes his defensive skills so great (except for running like crazy obviously) It is never mentioned specifically, that's why I mentioned it.

I don't think Rafa's BH is underrated at all. It's always been a great, reliable and solid shot. It's not as great as his FH, but his BH has always been considered an excellent shot.
