What if Federer keeps winning?

The guy is obviously firing on all cylinders at the moment but given his age, there's the constant threat his level could decline quickly, he could get injured, etc. But what if it doesn't, and he doesn't...and instead, he runs the table over the next 3-4 years? if he could somehow sustain this level the guy could potentially pull down not just another slam or two, but 5, 6 maybe?

not really going anywhere with this but it just occurred to me there is the possibility he just doesn't go anywhere for a while. would be crazy.

The last thing I need is my nephews telling me tennis is an old person’s sport.

It’s annoying to have to keep telling them tennis is not exclusively for the elite, or for the rich, or that silly thing they only play in Europe.

If Fed is dominating in his 40’s, it’s not good for the game. It’s nice for us oldies, but the sport itself probably goes down a few more notches when it comes to public interest and media.

The VB wakes up in a cold sweat imagining this.

I think it's possible because we've never seen anything like him.
Chances are that he'll slow down further and that will be it, but he has the perfect game for that to not matter as much. If anyone could do it, it's him.

He seems to still have the motivation, which in itself is incredible, and who will beat him? Thiem? Zverev? Lmao
Nobody is going to retire him - he will probably call it quits at 40+ when he finally, finally decides he's had enough.

We've also never seen anything like the drought that followed Nadal, Djokovic and even Murray.

I wonder if Federer's current domination is a symptom of tennis' slow, impending death which may have started a long time ago

Cause I'm pretty sure that the Slams are far from a perfect image of how tennis is actually doing

Media interest in tennis has picked up if anything since Fed's resurgence. His story is special because he's the best ever.

But I think that the longer this goes for, the harder tennis will fall when he finally does go. That is true.

I do think that in the medium term at least, tennis is in trouble. There will be a big crunch when Fed hangs it up for good.

True, I see more articles in the newsfeed now that Fed’s back on top. His story is a really special one, no doubt about it.

I don’t even know how I’ll respond when he finally calls it quits, often when he goes out of a big tournament I lose a lot of interest.

I would continue watching tennis until Fedr retires. Since I do wish Fedr go down with the most slams of all time, I'd then keep an eye on Rafa's slam count, then just stop caring about professional tennis altogether when Rafa retires.

just a few more years and transhumanism will have evolved to such lengths that Federer can keep ruling tennis for centuries more without slowing down. Just hang in there, Rog.

I'll probably just become a "tennis fan" and appreciate a variety of players.
I doubt I'll ever follow anyone like I've followed Fedr - he got me into tennis and was my first and only favourite.

In a sense I’ve already had this happen twice in my life so I’m kind of prepared for it.

When Wayne Gretzky retired I stopped being an active fan of ice hockey, and became a passive fan.

When Michael Jordan retired I stopped being an active fan of basketball, and became a passive fan.

Active would be going out of my way to follow the sport - live events, graveyard shifts, endless analysis and speculation.

Passive would be going over to Espn.com and catching the results. Maybe watching a big game on television once every few months or so.

Maybe this is what he's actually going for.
I was always suspicious of him and Delpo signing with the same boutique "management agency" and going dark for a while around the time that both were seriously injured.
They've got to be using all that money on something. You can only spend so much on sombreros and Swiss private school fees.

Fedpotro with their newly developed bionic back and wrists will leave the ATP and dominate the intergalactic tour for centuries to come.

That's how I follow tennis when Fed is out. :D

FPPT will take over as the main forum when he retires.
I wonder how it will go.
Will we just scare away all the oldies? Will we suffer heavy casualties in the transition due to the current residents of FPPT getting triggered and mass reporting us?
Will we all peacefully coexist? Will the debates stat anew with Rosewall fans instead of Nadal fans?

Crap. You’re making it sound like we’re the ones also being pushed into retirement when he goes.

FPPT is the retired community here at TTW.

Forewarned is Forearmed:

In my geezer tennis days I plan on Kohli being GOAT by selective amnesia - all of you guys had better bring your canes and sticks because it’s going to be endless bickering.

It's really something to think about. Sampras fans will be the worst most likely. Still butthurt that he isn't the GOAT anymore. It could get real ugly.

Tennis won't retire Federer. Federer will retire tennis. GOAT ironist.

Yip. It’s also a thought I have sometimes. Federer killing the current format of tennis for good might just be the best thing for the sport.

The only way I ever see tennis becoming mainstream again is if there’s a shift in emphasis towards more of a team mentality.

In this regard, I’m very happy to see more events like Laver Cup, and the recent changes to Davis Cup. For me this resonates more than getting excited about an individual nextgen.

Format of a team is sort of like college but more nuanced:

Some manner of individual
Some manner of doubles
Some manner of gender balance
Some manner of age categories from young to old.

Total points added up for a win or loss.

They should just rename the sport of tennis, to the sport of Federer and be done with it.

Fed winning is always a good thing.

We're already living in that reality imo. This is the bonus time. He should've retired with 18, but his last hurrah has turned into a separate career and he's up to 20.

I thought the decline in form from the 2017 AO to the 2018 AO was significant. But no one is willing to step up and stop him.

I thought so too, yet he breezed through to the final before dropping any sets.

I hear what you're saying but I'm not sure that I agree. In 2018 he just wasn't pushed into areas where he needed to up his game to the top level apart from the final. And in the final it looked like he did - at first. He blitzed Cilic in the opening set in a vintage display and it seemed like Cilic was a very long shot to even take a set at that point. I would argue that it was less Cilic raising his level than Federer feeling the moment and getting tight that led to the two dropped sets. In the final set when Fed "bit down on his mouth guard" so to speak and focused himself he trounced the guy. Cilic is a great player but his only avenue to beating Federer seems to be total redlining of his game with a tiny margin of error.

Is the fifth gear still there? I would say if guys like Stan, Nadal, Djokovic and Delpo can get back on the court and challenge him at the pointy end of tournaments then we might see it. Otherwise he'll keep cruising through tournaments with a combination of exho level play, and fairly passive routine level play and overall a higher amount of unforced errors and the odd loss to gritty journeymen. I'm fine with that.

If Federer keeps winning it'll be a victory for us all.
If he doesn't and Nadal does it'll be an unmitigated disaster.

Kinda already happened in the WTA with Serena and maybe it's going to be the way forward for ATP too.

Gabe's right. Nole saved tennis for awhile there.
Yup, no need to thank him. Toss him a biscuit instead.
