In a follow up to my previous thread predicting players future Grand slam credentials (http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=495506)

I ask this question, What will the career high rank of these players be?

Number one ranked players are excluded as they can not go any higher.

I will state the players current high rank before their name and my prediction after

2)Murray 2
3)Ferrer 3
3)Wawrinka 3
4) del potro 3
4)Soderling 4
5)Berdych 5
5)Tsonga 5
7)Gasquet 7
9)Cilic 7
9)Isner 8
10)Raonic 3
11)Nishikori 3
12)Janowicz 1
16)Dimitrov 1
18 )Gulbis 8
24)Paire 7
27)Tomic 1

This is only a short list of the top players and some other prospects, feel free to add more names (particularly younger players who should progress up the rankings) for yourself and others to predict.

Don't be afraid to make predictions, it is only a bit of fun and to see what people think of players.

There is no way the bolded ones are even close to ever happening. Other than this the list looks OK. What was the Soderling's highest ranking. Did he actually made it to 4? If not than no for him too.

We might be tough markers but Janowicz, Dimitrov & Tomic all future number 1's??

The OP is obviously just fooling around. Nothing any of those 3 has achieved so far gives even the slightest hint that they could actually be future #1s at some point and what the heck is Soderling, who almost certainly will never play again, even doing on the list??

First of all, ultimately these players careers will be partly determined by court speed. If those in charge speed up the courts then Raonic will have a better career than if they slow them down.

I haven't taken this fully seriously. If my life depended on getting the results correct my predictions would probably look different.

But I will explain, somebody has to be world number one, the position can not just lie vacant. If you don't think the players are that good then it is more likely the ranking will be handed around. Just look at the WTA situation the last few years.

I will explain the choices:

Dimitrov: I think he is a very good player who will win slams and reach number 1. Plain and simple. Once again somebody has to win the slams.

Janowicz: I will admit this is maybe heart over head. Janowicz is a streaky player which is a problem but I think he can reach the top. Lets not forget Wimbledon 2013. Janowicz was a set up in the Semis against your boy, the eventual champion. Murray only won that match due to experience. Had Janowicz reached the final I think he would have won.

Tomic: Clearly very talented. We all know his situation, if that can be sorted and he applies himself then there is no reason he will not go to the top. The question is, will he apply himself? Also the surgery should result in better movement.

Yeah you might be right about Berdych. He could get to 3 in the next few months. 3-8 are currently very tight anyone could get up 3 with a few good results.

Even fantasy has to be grounded in some basic reality. IMO you cannot predict possible future #1s on the basis that they are talented and have attractive games. The sport is littered with talented players who never achieved anything or never reached their potential.

What counts are results, not talent! So far, neither Dimitrov, Janowicz nor Tomic have achieved anything in the way of results to justify tipping them as future world #1s. Of the 3, only Janowicz has made it to the final of a big tournament (2012 Paris) and gone deep into a Slam (2013 Wimbledon). But unlike the other 2, he hasn't even won a title of any description yet.

IMO it is justifiable to speculate as future #1s only those players who have demonstrated they can win big titles. It may be one thing to speculate on whether Dimitrov, Janowicz or Tomic can win big titles in the future, but until any of them ever do, it is just not possible to tout them as future #1s.

I'd argue reaching the Quarters of Wimbledon at the age of 18 justifies how people view Tomic, if his surgery was succesful, I see him having a good year

I agree.

Re Mainad

Also I can predict what I want, they are my predictions.

When everybody was saying Fed will never win a slam. I said he was special, he didn't have a bad career.

I do believe that Murray would be number 1 because Federer and Nadal would probably retire 2-3 years before the end of their peak years with Novak. The question is can Andy sustain his top level status because around all of his inner battles during the match at some point in his late 20s he can fall in the ranking, the frustration would become bigger and in the end he can never come back

Dimitrov looks serious. I didn't think he had the movement/game to be effective in the modern baseline slugfest era, but he seems to be dedicated to taking his fitness and effort to the next level.

I think he's close to being in the thick of things with the Big 4.

You don't think Dimitrov generation will all be top 5? I mean when top guys decline, who else will replace them if not Raonic, Nishikori, Tomic. Dolgo? I mean who is there? They are the only ones left, so it's logical that they will be on top?

Or you have a hunch that some newer generation will show up and replace them?

I think Djokovic / Murray generation will overlap with the Dimitrov generation hence i don't see the latter group rising as high as top 5.

Some other group of youngsters will come along and dominate when Djokovic / Murray are well and truly done is what i'm thinking.

Maybe, we will see. Usually it takes 10 years for new generation talents to emerge. I mean Fed's generation was 10 years younger than Pete's.

Now we will see if Rafa/Nole generation, who are only 5 years apart is the new trend of faster evolution or just a coincidence.

If things reseted itself (your prediction), then Raonic generation really won't dominate. I guess we will see.

As a Fed fan, I would like to see it. That would mean Fed dominated tougher field and in less homogenized conditions. Would make his results even more impressive.
